Thrice bitten: Luis Suarez does it again

By John Davidson / Roar Guru

Luis Suarez has done it again, caught biting an opponent while playing for Uruguay against Italy at the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Uruguay knocked out Italy 1-0 to go through to the next round, but what the game will be remembered for is Suarez’s ‘Mouth of God’ moment.

The buck-toothed striker took a chunk out of Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini in the second half, but escaped action from the referee.

For those who don’t know, Suarez has a lot of form in this area. The bitey one nibbled on an Eindhoven player’s shoulder in 2010 and then tasted a Chelsea player in 2013.

You add this to a long litany of incidents like dives, handballs, punches, headbutting a referee and a racism scandal.

So what do you do with a problem like Luis Suarez?

Ban him for starters. He copped seven games for his first bite and 10 for his second. I reckon 20 and he might start to get the message. Suspend him from the rest of the World Cup and half the Premier League season and maybe, just maybe, he’ll pull his head in.

Suarez may be a brilliant striker but this behaviour is outrageous. But how do you stop him doing it again? I really don’t know.

Suarez has deep psychological issues. Last time he blamed the English media after he bit Branislav Ivanovic. I can’t wait to hear what reason, or excuse, he comes up with now.

Suarez, the 21st century footballer-turned vampire. You can’t make this stuff up.

There you go. What more proof do you need to show that the other sports have packed up and gone home.

As far as I know, there hasn't been any NRL, Super Rugby, Cricket, or tennis in Melbourne since the World Cup started. Could be just coincidence.

Apparently they have. NRL has been called off indefinitely. AFL will continue thanks to enormous govt funding which will dry up soon. Rugby union, cricket and tennis ceased to exist in the universe the moment WQ posted that comment. Scientists are calling it a Big-Bang-esque moment.

@catnap, I don't think "a lot of South Americans think its (i.e. biting another player) part of the game".

But, at least you're watching highlights & then taking time from your busy schedule to share your insights with football fans. If football is even getting the haters to engage in discussion, other sports may as well give up ... GAME OVER.

I don't watch Soccer, but could not help but see the slow mo's of this on the news and everywhere else. This bloke clearly bit old mate on the shoulder, and then took a dive as did old mate that had been bitten! The game is farcical and this incident reminds me of just why I don't watch Soccer!

He's screwed. He'll get at least 3 games. His team's hopes go with him.

2015 headline reads Suares continuing on from last year is leading goal scorer in the EPL, gets a 120m offer from real Madrid. he'll miss the five internationals for Uruguay that year though from being found guilty of biting for the third time. Do you think suarez cares, sorry headline should read Liverpool struggling for goals in the post suarez era. Suarez to make ends meet has started a chain of cannibal themed restaurants.

Oddly enough though punter, this incident and his likely international ban, could well serve to drive his price up. Due to the ban, a likely heavyweight champions league club could rely on his services exclusively. That in itself, with his undeniable talent and soccer genius could well be worth the risk of his madness and lead to a mega-deal. LIverpool only stand to gain because they could offload the troubles, pretending to take the moral high ground, and cash in.

He shouldn't miss a game of football for this latest bite. http://thepublicapology.net/2014/06/suarez-should-not-miss-a-minute-of-football-due-to-latest-bite/

I know they would Nick, and resign again even if another biting episode played out in the A-League...but you have to have hope.

The effort in 2010 was actually entirely logical. Many years ago players used to always try and stop goals with their hands because it was better to concede a penalty then a goal. Then FIFA bought in the red card to stop the tactic. However as Suarez was in the last minute of the game he knew his sending off was meaningless and so the hand ball gave his team a chance - which they were good enough to take.

I can understand Uruguay journalists saying this but coming from the FA, amazing how low they would stoop.

Wait a second! He hasn't actually been found guilty of anything yet! And, if you set aside the video and photo evidence, the testimony of the Italian players and the millions of witnesses at the ground and watching on TV, then the case starts to look pretty flimsy. #justiceforsuarez

The English FA can ask FIFA to extend his ban to include club matches. It has been done before.

I love the fact that the Uruguay FA is alleging that Chielini's bite marks are photoshopped. Anything that is dished out to this serial biter will be nullified by adulation at home. As Thompson said in his ESPN article, the man is "batshit crazy". I only hope that Liverpool gets rid of him. No club of any standing would want to risk the bad press that comes with Suarez. Yes, he's a superb footballer, but... One journalist said that above the boots, he's bonkers. (Sorry, can't find the citation for the Thompson article. I found it on a link in The Guardian Australia.)

Yes, this could open a can of worms. This guy is worth a $75-100 million to Liverpool, yes his own doing, but he was doing for his country & in a FIFA competition, nothing to do with Liverpool. Trying to get him banned from club competition could cause some lawyers to earn some money. very interesting, watch this space.

I'm not condoning what Suarez has done, he deserves a long ban, it will only be from int'ls otherwise lawyers are involved, as clubs own players not FIFA or countries. But please don't tell me this doesn't happen in other sports.

No!!! What game are you watching? Look at SOO Bird is repeat offender a total grub, I cannot follow NSW while he is there. Cooper, ask the McGaw what he thinks of this repeat offender, not that Mcgaw isn't one too.
