When did Serena ever win a Grand Slam? Surely that’s the Australian, French, Wimbledon and the US Open all in one calendar year? It might be her 19th Open win (which is admirable), but a Grand Slam it is not.

Serena Williams all set for Grand Slam number 19

Probably because, as it was well known at the time, Bradman had no time for Irish Micks. Stan McCabe got the same treatment.

Cricket Australia's treatment of Michael Clarke has been disgraceful

And this is news? To whom?

Top Indian officials - including ICC chairman - named in IPL fix claim

Ignoring Watson’s age (which won’t see him playing all that much longer), it’s his bowling that has mainly contributed to his impressive collection of injuries. But playing him as a batsman??? Nah.

"The problem with Michael Clarke is..." Chappelli takes aim

Are you listening to the same Chappell that I am? Oops, sorry. Got it. You’re taking the p***. The one I’m thinking of used to spend most of his commentary time sniping at Tony Greig. Wonder who he’ll target now.

Why bring in dirt from India and then expect it to behave as it would in India in Australia’s climate? Why not simply have the Australian team do a month or two in the Centre to get that experience on dry wickets in a dry environment? Some well-placed development in the NT would probably have other benefits in the long run, too. It certainly has benefited the AFL.

Our spin solution – turn the SCG back into a dustbowl

Conchie: you said “, 34 players and not one with a axe to grind.”. OK, what about Paddy Ryder who admits he was worried sick about the possible knock-on effect on his new-born son? It has taken more than a year for the child to be cleared of any damage from whatever Paddy took. Paddy didn’t say what he took and probably doesn’t know for sure, but he was worried enough to have his son monitored and — inevitably — leave the club. Maybe not grinding an axe, but certainly worried enough to bring it all into the open.

James Hird wants a new ASADA probe

Don’t forget that Cronulla’s ‘transgressions’ lasted three months, not twelve months plus. If the Essendon payers get off as lightly, then there is an injustice done.

James Hird wants a new ASADA probe

Delusion rools!

So glad to hear that the crowd was healthy. Do they do medicals on the way in, or do prospective members of the crowd have to produce a medical certificate to prove that they don’t have Ebola, for example. I know English is a very flexible language, and it’s possible to have great fun with it, but please don’t hand linguistic players such easy prey.

Pity about the result though. Was the crowd still healthy after watching that?

Australia's baseball tactics fail miserably against South Africa

What’s the fascination with Watson? There are only two certainties with him: he’s one of the older brigade and he’ll be injured sooner rather than later. Look to the future. Come to think of it, much the same can be said about Clarke. He’s a long way from being a pup. I don’t have any solutions, but hopefully CA will think creatively.

Haddin, Lyon and Siddle face the axe

One thing about Warner that no one can take from him: his absolute love of cricket. I admired how he stepped up to take the gloves when Haddin did his shoulder. A difficult position, full of tension, no practice, but he did it with a grin. And did it surprisingly well. Good luck to him.

David Warner is bound for greatness

A lot of people like me (and I’ve read plenty of comments regarding the issue in various examples of our illustrious media) have been put off by Goodes’s comments shortly after becoming Australian of the Year. Anyone who brings up the “It’s OUR land, anyway” statement is being racist. I thought that we had moved far along the path of anti-racism, and this brought back unpleasant memories.

I’ve been to many, many VFL/AFL games (even at Victoria Park in its heyday as a supporter of the opposition team) and never booed a player. But the hypocrisy of publicly shaming a 13-year-old (reprehensible as her remarks were) and Goodes’s own statement is mind-blowing.

The booing of Goodes: Poor taste or theatre?

Don’t you love the fact that Sydney’s first three goals were kicked by ex-Hawthorn players (Kennedy, McGlynn and Franklin)? I don’t care where Franklin plays, but having a Kennedy playing for Sydney seems so wrong.

BTW, glad to see Dunstall present the cup, but Kennedy Snr (in his brown mac) would have been a great choice. No, might have upset his grandson, although he knew Grandpa was barracking for Hawthorn.

Hawthorn win 2014 AFL Grand Final 137-74 over Sydney

Slane, somehow I don’t see Hodge as anything other than a one-team player. The Tigers missed their chance in that draft, when they could have had Franklin (for a while, anyway) and Lewis as well.

Hawthorn's dynasty isn't over yet

Just a spot of irony to lighten the mood. My great-uncle played for South Melbourne in their first premiership. the irony? He was from NSW.

Oh, and as a diehard Hawks supporter, I was offended by Franklin’s comment about wanting to play in a premiership side and was glad to see the back of him. My family, Hawthorn supporters to the bone, agree. Last year, his main contribution was to keep a defender or two busy whilst Roughy and others did the business. If that was the way he felt, we’re better off without him. And this season has proved us correct: game after game with ten individual goal-kickers spells strength and depth.

Buddy's insult will cost Swans the flag

Yep. You’d have to pay me to live in Sydney too.

We might be sick of Eddie talking COLA, but that doesn't make him wrong

I have two elements that add much enjoyment to the day. The first is to ignore the pre-match “entertainment” on the grounds that it’s never entertaining. The second is to not engage in the National Anthem because the players don’t seem to be able to master it. I’ve heard it said that their IQs roughly equal their boot size. So, either they can’t manage the anthem or they simple won’t. I remain puzzled as to who the Australian team is playing to warrant the anthem in the first place. Is the Victorian team the Australian one? Does inter-state mean foreign? I manage all of this by simply not switching on the TV until 2.29. Result: happy viewer. Unless Hawthorn loses. In that case, I’ll eventually get over it because it’s just a game.

How to enjoy the AFL grand final if you can't be there

I heard you the first time. But I agree: how long do we keep waiting for Watson to get fit and stay that way? I’m over him. Give someone else a chance.

Mitch Marsh can end Watson's Test career

So it takes a Hawk to beat a Hawk? I agree that Hawthorn didn’t get the best out of Kennedy and McGlynn, but suggest that it may well have had something to do with the depth of the player roster. It still sticks in the craw that there is a Kennedy not playing for Hawthorn, but he’s had a superb year and I hope the Brownlow treats him well.

Enough about Buddy: Kennedy and McGlynn to lead Swans to premiership triumph

Agree re the umpires. I usually don’t notice them, but was increasingly frustrated as the game went on. At least one Port goal was “an umpire’s goal”. I found myself asking the footy gods if Hawthorn could have an umpire too.

Also agree re Langford. Apples don’t fall too far from the trees, do they? He did a magnificent job on Boak.

I was also enormously impressed with Monfries’s efforts. Yes, I barrack for Hawthorn and have done for 60+ years, but usually find myself applauding the opposition as well, and Port deserved all accolades yesterday. Watch out for them next season.

Not a classic game, but enthralling and full of suspense.

Langford shines in tight Hawks' win over Port

Peptides worked, then?

James Hird has to go, now

Thank you, Sean, for reminding us of the world beyond the football field. I truly admire the Jack Gunstons of the sports world, and point out that there are many of them who give such pleasure to sick children. We need to be reminded of the good these young men do, rather than highlighting the idiots.

R.I.P. Connor. The world is better for your having been here.

A sad farewell to a young fan

I read in this morning’s paper that the Crows are interested in Simon Goodwin. I feel a Hird moment coming on. That’s not a criticism of Goodwin. It’s just a comment about appointing favourite sons.
