Why I hate being an NRL fan sometimes

By The Black Widow / Roar Rookie

When I wake in the morning the first thing I see is my Brisbane Broncos capeflag blu-tacked to my wall, with Corey Parker and Sam Thaiday’s signatures on it.

I pack all my things for uni into my Brisbane Broncos sportsbag and then chuck on my Brisbane Broncos beanie to keep my delicate ears warm.

If not clear by now, I support the Brisbane Broncos while living in Sydney. There comes the issue I have with the game.

In Round 1 of this year, I went to the Bulldogs versus Broncos game at ANZ Stadium with a complimentary ticket that comes with being a Broncos member living in New South Wales. Like any diehard league fan, I was decked out in all my finest Broncos gear. While excitedly looking for my gate to enter, I walked past a lot of Bulldogs supporters who either looked at me funny or made quiet, smartarse comments that I pretended I couldn’t hear.

Then I passed a couple who may or may not have been under the influence.

The woman looked me up and down and spat out “You’re in the wrong f***ing state,” while the man laughed. I kept walking and tried to ignore them but she kept going. “I’ll f***ing kill you!”

Yes. My life was threatened for simply supporting my team in my club’s gear in enemy territory.

Now, I can kind of understand where she’s coming from: I have been known to hurl out loud passionate chants for my team, and against the others, and that’s fine, but never to the extent that I would wish grievous harm on the other club’s players, members or supporters.

I find it difficult to have intelligent, passionate conversation about league with some people because they blur the lines of club support and passion with blind love; the kind where only their club is right and everyone else’s is wrong.

And that’s when I begin to hate being such a passionate NRL supporter.

People who bitch and whine and say, “Oh the referees had the other team’s colours on tonight”, when the officiating – from a fair and impartial viewpoint – was actually right down the middle. Then there are those who hold unfair and harsh vendettas against athletes for simply playing well against their team.

I can openly say, “Jarryd Hayne had a great game against my Broncos last night. Well done!” I can pay credit when it’s due.

Rugby league is one of the biggest sports in the country and one of the most loved games. Let’s not ruin the game with death threats and harsh comments. Open your eyes to how fantastic watching an NRL game live with a pie and a beer truly is, among a supportive crowd. There is no greater feeling.

When I went to the Bulldogs v Storm GF game, supporting the Storm that day, I was amazed at the great atmosphere esp from Doggies fans. Middle Easterners, Asians etc in the Blue & White made for an amazing experience, sampled some great Middle Eastern food, listened to the drums (sorry forgot the name) and felt no threat at all, & there weren't even a lge amount of police standing around.

Like this In Brief? Never in my life have I seen in rugby league culture: father beaten in front of son at the AFL: http://www.theage.com.au/victoria/demon-players-father-bashed-for-telling-abusive-pies-fan-to-calm-down-20120717-228hr.html Swans fans assault guy & push his mother & father: http://www.smh.com.au/nsw/scg-violence-claims-swans-fans-caused-concussion-20140629-3b25m.html Or let's go to South Africa where a bloke can survive war to be beaten to death by rugby union fans or 'rugby oaths" at the Super Rugby 15: http://www.iol.co.za/dailynews/news/i-watched-rugby-oafs-beat-man-to-death-1.1492646#.U9N69GBd5jo I'll stick to my league culture thanks.

Thats just some garbage made up by someone who thinks only ethnic people live in west sydney. Middle easterners arent known for being soccer fans. Wanderers fans may be loud, but they arent actually violent. They have had incidents, but name a sporting team and a code that hasnt. If you are the type who wants to hate on lebos then hate on lebos, but dont pretend sporting teams has anything to do with your prejudices. As a fan of neither team i felt more threatened at a roosters game than a dogs game, dogs fans leave you alone whereas roosters fans spend all game yelling insults at 'westies'. The irony in being tanked up at a footy game yelling insults at all and sundry and accusing others of boganry is brilliant. Like when manly fans spit on people.

Funny you should ask that. I have seen it at suburban grounds and at ANZ. At ANZ I was ready to report it but couldn't find anyone. Look, it's not like it happens EVERY game. And I've seen it at other sports too but the point is it's not on.

Can't wait for all the 'it happens in all sports' and 'rugby league is reflection of society' comments. Wrong, rugby league crowds from grassroots up are not representive of societal norms. Thank God.

Eqiquin, out of interest did you say something to these people yelling abuse? Did you report it to security? The security at Suncorp stamped out abusive language at the games I've attended when the Rabbitohs visited and that was from members of the Burrow. They were very tame this time around when they visited. Perhaps people need to take action as all grounds have security, instead of sitting back and saying nothing. I've seen abusive language at many sporting events-cricket, AFL, union, soccer international and one must snip at the bud as it happens. However, idiots are going to be replaced with more idiots. If our government can't stamp out drink driving or speeding after tens of millions of dollars of education, we are never going to stamp out abusive language behaviour at sports events but we can moderate it as it happens. I certainly wouldn't put up with that if I was in earshot. I've never witnessed such vile language at Suncorp, AAMI, ANZ, SFS, C Bus, NIB Stadium. Perhaps its more prevalent at suburban grounds? Which ground did you go to? Unfortunately doesn't help when you hear homophobic slurs by a commentator on national TV and get a slap on the wrist. It shouldn't be tolerated nor should racist slurs.

Not at all - I would say that most abuse or fighting that goes on in any footy in Australia pales by comparison to overseas supporters - look at a Millwall fan the wrong way and you're in trouble. But the point I was making is you can hardly ask people from making it a code bashing exercise when you yourself have already started it - Firecrackers to Flares being just one example. The post was the authors view - as I've never been to a league, I can't personally comment, but the Black Widow didn't compare it to other codes, just the games he or she has been to.

Can't say as I've been abused personally but I've definitely seen it. To League's credit though I have never really seen or heard of racial abuse at games.

I've been to planet of league games in 4 states & overseas, never been abused, only ever seen some push & shove from some idiots on the drink, never heard gay slurs, have had Titan fans rib me being a rabbitoh supporter but never allow them to rise by just ignoring it, or moving. I've seen worse at the cricket where hours on the turps has made things quite feral.

I have been going to NRL games for many years and have myself noticed this behaviour. For instance, Matt Cecchin was copping a fair bit of abuse at a game I attended recently. To criticise his reffing abilities is one thing, but to attack his sexuality is unacceptable. I will usually hear at least once per game somebody call an injured player a gay slur. "everyone around them" is just a figure of speech. It was more like a number of people in the vicinity who were numerous enough and loud enough to be noticed. Okay?

Haha Union crowds are almost too well-behaved in my opinion. I still remember my first Union game when I would shout support for my team (no profanities or anything like that). The other fans would all turn and look at me as if to say "Would you keep it down? You're ruining it for everybody!"

I only go to live union and a-league games now as the crowds are better behaved - not perfect but just better

I have been going to NRL games for many, many years and NEVER heard those sort of comments. You say 'everyone around them' shouted those slurs? Don't believe it for one moment.
