Brisbane are the new Geelong

By Cameron Palmer / Roar Guru

Imagine for a second that this article did not have a headline and the premise of this story had not been blatantly given away with the opening five words.

Go into a parallel universe where the headline had been unread and consider these masked players and their rookie campaign averages at AFL level.

Player A: 17 possessions, 4 tackles, 2 clearances, 4 marks, 2 inside 50s
Player B: 15 possessions, 3 tackles, 3 clearances, 2 marks, 1 inside 50s

Player A: 16 possessions, 4 marks, 2 tackles, 2 inside 50s, 1 clearance
Player B: 13 possessions, 2 marks, 2 tackles, 2 inside 50s, 2 clearances

Player A: 13 possessions, 4 tackles, 3 clearances
Player B: 8 possessions, 3 tackles, 2 inside 50s, 1 goal

Player A: 11 possessions, 3 marks, 4 one percenters, 2 rebounds
Player B: 13 possessions, 2 marks, 2 one percenters, 1 goal

Player A: 12 possessions, 3 marks
Player B: 5 possessions, 1 mark

Player A: 11 possessions, 3 onepercenters
Player B: DNP

Before you even make a guess at who these players are, make a choice on what group of players you would take based off these averages. No wrong answers, except anyone with a sense of sanity and credible is going to choose group A.

And now if you answered that the Player A group consisted of James Aish, Lewis Taylor, Nick Robertson, Darcy Gardiner, Tom Cutler and Daniel McStay, well done.

And for final bonus points if you answered the Player B group consisted of James Kelly, Jimmy Bartel, Gary Ablett, Steve Johnson, Charlie Gardiner and Henry Playfair, kudos to you.

Go back and just look at those numbers again. Look at those names in group B. Scratching your head yet? Maybe sit down. Start thinking about everything that Group B has gone on to do as individuals and as a group.

Still with us? Yes, no-one is saying it, but this Brisbane rookie class may be the best thing since Geelong. Geelong, a side whose origins of a dynasty can be traced back to those names mentioned above.

What is not even considered in the above totals is that Geelong blooded 53 games into this group in their rookie season, while Brisbane have thrown their first year players into a combined 63 games with five more rounds to go.

It is a different attitude to how first-year players are developed in 2014 as opposed to 2002, but it still shows what Brisbane potentially have got by giving experience to this young group.

It is always dangerous to compare young players and players from different eras, but the striking similarities around the 2001 draft class of Geelong and the 2013 draft class of Brisbane means that more should be being said about this Brisbane group coming through.

The AFL world is not talking about this group of Lion cubs as potentially part of the next AFL dynasty, but alas that may be what is about to unfold. Given the troubled circumstances that brought them to the club perhaps they should be called the ‘Fix Six’.

There are differences in the origins of how these separate groups of six came to AFL level, with Geelong trying to rejuvenate an ageing list while still trying to keep contending for finals year in year out.

With Brisbane, it was a mass exodus of young players which forced the club’s hand into going back to the draft and trying again. Despite the differences though, the reality is that Geelong took six players in the top 41 of 2001 and Brisbane took six players in the top 34 of 2013.

In 2001, Geelong coach Mark Thompson was still finding his feet at AFL level and questions remained about whether he could lead the Cats to future success.

This was the first year that he had a high number of draft picks to work with and along with his list management team they nailed it. They got talented players foremost and got players that reacted positively to what Thompson was building for club culture.

Brisbane less than twelve months ago was a club without hope. It had sacked their coach, a former premiership captain who had crippled everything that had been built during his playing days.

Rather than go for a proven coach, Brisbane again went to the club great well. This time though, they hit on their appointment. Justin Leppitsch has proven to be a masterstroke as coach with his attitude and demeanour clearly resonating with a playing group that was looking for the style of leadership and the communication skill set that Leppitsch has brought.

Again the coach stories are different but in a way the similarities are striking. These are two young coaches that found the group of players which they wanted to go into battle with. They had found their core.

History tells us that the Geelong six of 2001 have gone on to play 1128 games, have 11 premiership medals between them, have won two Brownlows, have won two Norm Smith medals and have multiple All-Australian and Best and Fairest accolades.

The ‘Fix Six’ have 63 games and no accolades.

Yet.

Get ready, they are chasing. ‘Fix Six’ and Brisbane are coming.

The big unspoken factor not mentioned in all these comments is the ongoing recruitment, list management and development Geelong put into those drafted youngsters. Hinkley, Sanderson and McCartney are all quality senior AFL coaches at other clubs and played a massive part in the development of the list - do the Lions have the quality coaches or resources to offer the same environment for the talented youngsters to flourish? Geelong also have one of the best recruiters in the game and a lot of their current talent has been picked up after being passed over by many of the lower teams I do think out of the bottom 3-4 teams (GWS list excluded) that the Lions have the most promising list. There main priority needs to be in attracting the very best coaching and recruiters to the club - Ling, Hayes, Brown and an experienced assistant coach could be the best signings for the club over the off season

I think geelongs success can be attributed in no small part to their change in attitude between 06 and 07. They changed the geelong culture from within. yes you have to have talent (draft picks), but its the intangibles that can make a good team great.

I think if you took the first year players in many teams, the stats would be similar. The Brisbane players are playing in a much weaker team than the Geelong team was at the time so are probably getting more of a run. The inclusion of Henry Playfair and Charlie Who? seems to be a bit of a red herring as they were hardly a significant part of Geelong's era of dominance.

'Brisbane are winning a flag with this group for sure'* * Conditional upon a multitude of variables that may or may not influence the validity of this claim. But seriously, I like your confidence Cameron. Nothing wrong with that. :)

Again, appreciate the feedback, and in order of appearance: Mac, I reckon you would take six premiership medals, one for each of them as a top starting point. Gecko, That is the beauty of the future. We don't know what is coming. Doesn't stop us from speculating and I don't think you can deny the links that are there to the Geelong of 2001 group. The Pedge, Wouldn't be so sure on Aish. I believe that Brisbane have been burnt by not welcoming their youth and have learnt a number of key lessons that will be used on the 'Fix Six'. You look at Aish and he appears a player that has really bought into the club. He reminds me a lot of Simon Black going over from WA, the talk was he would always go back to Perth, but it never happend. I back Brisbane in, I think they keep these six. Malahka, Haha, I have been writing daily on and off about the AFL for five seasons. I've had some good calls over that time and I have had some shockers. Key is I always own my calls, good, bad or indifferent. Geoff, Not quite sure what you are trying to get acorss here. As I said, yes it is a different game now, but the similarities of the group are there with or without the stats. Don't get what point you are making on Playfair/Gardiner Vs Ablett/Bartel. If anything you are strengthening my argument because the performance of those Cats in the first year replicated exactly what happened over their careers. If the 'Fix Six' follow the same process, Brisbane are winning a flag with this group for sure. As always apprecaite all responses and feedback, best of luck to your team over the weekend.

Statistics can always be skewed to form an opinion and for this reason I think this is article and others like it have severe weakenesses. Eg playfair and gardeners possessions were ordinary compared to ablett and bartel. A players career is a journey that relies on many factors many of which cant be simplified to possessions or games played. pinning hopes on the above mentioned stats is far fetched at best.

Paparone re-signed today to extend his contract to end of 2016. Lewis Taylor, Lester, Robertson and Bewick have also just re-signed.

We can only hope that they turn out anything even half as geelong. I'm not all the confident in Aish staying. Would be suprised if we hang onto him really. As Greg Swan said on the radio recently the lions look like they are going to have to pay overs to hang onto this bunch. The players mangers have the club over a barrel at the moment knowing the fans and club don't want another max exodus.

Sorry Cameron but I suspect most teams have a crop of young blokes whose early stats match the early stats of the Geelong champs. It's what they do 5 years later that counts. I won't be holding my breath over the current Brisbane crop.

If they achieved half the accolades that the 2001 Draft Class did, I'd be stoked!

Great call Josh, You could see last year that the kid could just play. It still amazes me that in all the testing that is done after the season, the biggest question. CAN THE KID ACTUALLY PLAY? never seems to be asked. A dam shame he is in Brisbane because both Taylor and Aish I believe are two of the best three rookies for the year. You can make a case for Bontempelli, but he hasn't done it over the season, you could make a case for Langdon but he has struggled for an extended period late and McDonald struggled a little bit early in the year. In my personal opinion it is between Taylor, Aish and Dunstan who should be your top three. However they simply haven't got the profile in what is a Victorian centric judging panel.

Top notch article Cam. I remember sitting on the couch last draft night watching slowly as club after club passed on Lewis Taylor. Having believed there was no hope, I thought that by some miracle he might find into North's lap at pick 30. I had been full-blown sold on this kid ever since I saw him play in the Champs... then Brisbane came long and buggered up my universe at pick 28!! Not ashamed to admit there were a few tears on my behalf.

Indeed. Paparone's father has leukemia, and Aish's family is deeply entwined with the Adelaide football culture. The go-home factor is as strong as ever, and no one seems to be doing anything to minimise its impact.

Appreciate all the feedback as always and in order of appearance: SportsfanGC, You raise an excellent point about this years draft, potentially another three top 25 picks will be the icing on top. Maybe a couple of forwards and another midfielder and the list really starts to come together down the line. Jack Smith, Like the point you make about Brisbane expectation going into this year. Remember they had a fairly good 2013 and there was some hope in 2014. Now if they can get full seasons from Rich, Leunberger etc... this starts to look a dangerous team and you may very well be right about a surprise packet for 2015. of course the only caution is the second year blues hitting the 'Fix Six'. TomC, Stranger things have happened. On paper Brisbane will be a more dangerous team then an Ablett-less Suns and GWS in 2015. Mister Football, Appreciate the feedback. I have been writing pretty heavily on the AFL for the past five years and this was one of the most fun pieces that I have put together. Dunno what it was, but had fun with the research, had fun writing it and at the end thought it came across the way I wanted. Thanks for the feedback. Paul, I think that you will. Brisbane are doing a lot of work on the culture and it is a heavy focus to retain this group. I think they will. John, Of course this is all speculation at this point; but history says good things. Slane, Two great points you raise.Yes, the game is very different now and how rookies are treated is different and the second point on the 2001 draft being an all-timer. Brisbane is certainly a different looking team then a number of other AFL sides, however maybe they are the start of a new trend. And as much as no draft will every top 2001, I do believe this 2013 will be considered a great draft in a decade time. It may not have had as much top end game changing players, but it does bat deep. For that reason I think Brisbane got the perfect draft for what they wanted and have made the most of what was a tough situation 9 months ago. As always thanks for having input fellow Roarers.

2001 is largely considered one of the most talent packed drafts in history. Look at some of the names that got picked up. It was a fantastic year to be picking the core of your team. I'd be very surprised if the 2013 draft ran as deep. The stats don't lie, but we play a different game today compared to 13 years ago. Here is hoping the Lions have the players they need to pick themselves up off the floor.
