Sharks receive show-cause notices: report

By News / Wire

Seventeen past and present Cronulla players have reportedly been issued with show-cause notices over the NRL club’s 2011 supplements program.

News Corp Australia says the notices, which follow ASADA’s 18-month anti-doping investigation, were distributed at a series of meetings on Wednesday.

The players will have 10 days to respond and have the option to challenge the notices, according to the report.

Show-cause notices ask potential offenders to explain why they should not be served with infraction notices over alleged breaches of the anti-doping code.

Breaches usually carry penalties of up to two years, but can be cut to six months for those who provide “substantial assistance” to ASADA.

Sharks skipper Paul Gallen is one of the players involved and expressed his concern on Wednesday morning that by accepting reduced bans, they’ll be labelled drug cheats.

“It’s (our reputation) tarnished now already, but no matter what, if we do this we’re going to be labelled a drug cheat,” he told Sky Sports Radio’s Big Sports Breakfast.

“It’s a tough situation to be in.

“Our mind and our mood changes every 10 minutes. At one stage we’re (thinking) ‘thank God, this is going to be over hopefully, whatever happens is going to happen and we can just get on with life’. Because closure on this thing would just be unbelievable (after) what we’ve gone through the past two seasons.

“But then you say ‘let’s stuff this, we’ve done nothing wrong’.

“It’s a real hard situation to be in.”

Regardless, Gallen was adamant he hadn’t taken any banned substance.

“I’m 100 per cent positive I’ve never taken anything that’s been on any banned list,” he said.

Pointless constantly referring to Armstrong: 1. He had wins to actually strip. 2. Everyone he had beaten had already tested positive years earlier. 3. By the time they got round to doing something about it (years after he retired), it was the world’s worst sercret that he had been doping the whole way through (obviously). 4. The Tour de France has a history of doping going all the way back to the early years. In this particular case, we've had political grandstanding and interference from the very start, and ASADA trying to come up with something, anything, to justify the hoopla - completely at odds with the way they are meant to go about their business. The fact that ASADA is now sitting down to cut deals with Cronulla tells you everything you need to know.

Not 10 days Craig,48 hours. They (the players)have to decide by Friday 22nd Aug 9am with legal opinion. Yet ASADA had the"information/facts on hand 1st November 2013,and needed all this time(9 months) to explore all legal angles . I'll say it once again despite the guilt/innocence of the players ,the whole thing from day one, with the political announcement, dragging all sports through the mill, the generalisations made ATT,the politicial interference, the amateurish behaviour with an under resourced ASADA.,the alleged deals offered to another code is/was a complete shambles. With rent a quote Ings(former ASADA) making conflicting statements adding to the utter schmozzle. With the naming of players by the D.T before any final decisions, adding further unnecessary fuel to the fire.A couple who in fact were not involved. Fahey summed it up pretty well.

ASADA may also be well aware of the ongoing mental state of the players over the last 18 months of the well publicised naming ,innuendo and speculation has provided, and taken that into account in determining possible suspensions. We can all sit back and call penalties farces, but unless we know the full story that ASADA allegedly knows, not hearsay or media dribble ,we are whistling in the wind. Throwing up a few out of left fielders as a mere sideline spectator.. Remember these players have less than 48 hours to make a decision on the matter of the show cause letters, which they admit liability or fight it.That is a huge dilemma for any player. Is this due to the fact ASADA needs to get a quick result so they have a proven precedent.? Or to get bigger fish quickly? Or do they want a result for the NRL which shows they are on the ball and put pressure elsewhere ? Why are they not given time til the court case result in Sept? Is it due to all parties in the NRL wanting a quick resolution? My guess the latter. Fahey the former head of WADA has slammed the Govt and ASADA as to the way the whole shebang was handled.

I asked a solicitor mate about all this today and he was more or less useless, said he knew very little about it, but he did suggest the Essendon case in front of Justice Middleton may be very important because it will create some legal precedent for what powers ASADA actually have. My guess is the players will probably end up having to choose between copping six months or heading to court.

Bikies - partners in Dank's clinic. Organised crime, see above. Systematic fixing, see the VPL's Southern Stars. Any more points to make ?

The reported suspensions to be handed out are a farce. If the players accept a deal the best case scenario is they miss the rest of the season. That is also on the proviso that they weren't aware what they were taking was a banned substance. A slap on the wrist.

Wrong it took 18 months because they had no proof and still don't and they are clearly inept.

Clearly you're not across doping controls...the absence of a positive result does not mean that an athlete cannot be found to have used prohibited substances. many athletes around the world have been banned (Armstrong; Jones and many others) where no positive result was found. Also many athletes have been banned with the use of biological passports...for Cronulla players to have been given SCN means that ASADA believes that a banned subtle has been used based on circumstantial and other evidence they have found...hence why it took 18 months

The Cronulla doctor did not tell any player to do whatever was alleged.that has been made plain and clear. He acted when he found out .
