Springbok flanker ruled out for two months

By The Crowd / Roar Guru

A neck injury will sideline flanker Francois Louw for about two months and deal South Africa another blow ahead of Rugby Championship Tests against Australia and New Zealand.

Halfback Ruan Pienaar withdrew injured at the weekend ahead of matches with the Wallabies on September 27 in Cape Town and the All Blacks on October 4 in Johannesburg.

Louw and Pienaar, who suffered the injuries during a 14-10 loss to New Zealand in Wellington last Saturday, were automatic starters for the Springboks in the southern hemisphere tournament.

Utility back JP Pietersen was recalled in place of Pienaar, but a replacement for Louw is going to be named only later this week, the South African Rugby Union (SARU) said.

The loss of Louw means coach Heyneke Meyer must prepare for the Wallabies and the All Blacks without both first-choice flankers.

Willem Alberts was injured on the eve of the first-round match against Argentina in Pretoria last month and has not played since.

Teboho ‘Oupa’ Mohoje and Warren Whiteley are the back-row options within the squad that toured Australasia this month, losing narrowly to Australia and New Zealand.

The choice of Meyer will be watched with great interest amid growing government criticism of a national rugby team containing only one regular black African, Zimbabwe-born prop Tendai Mtawarira.

African Mohoje made a brief, impressive mid-year appearance as a replacement against Scotland, but has not had any game time since.

Almost 80 per cent of the South African population is African and nine per cent are whites, who traditionally fill 12 of the 15 Springboks starting places.

Title-holders New Zealand lead the Championship with 16 points after four rounds, South Africa and Australia have 10 each and Argentina three.

OMG, seriously is the response. If it not already obvious here is a starting point. Problem - Racial abuse and systematic repression of black africans in SA by the white minority over a significant period of time. Solution - Redress the racial abuse and systematic repression.

Yes, the 2014 version of Schalk is nice at 8. Whiteley did well, too. I would like to see Reinach at Newlands.

Burger seems a bit better suited to 8 than 7 and Duane seems more suited to 7 than 8 given the players available at he moment. I think we found a 10 so now we can start to look for another 9. Harry, the reason I hink HM did not develope a 9 is because of his search for a 10. Question is, can Pollard control and manage a game, if so do you then need to also develope a 9 that can do the same.

Louw is a big loss, because he's been one of our most consistent all-rounders for 3 years. But credit to Meyer (he deserves NONE for the lack of depth at 9); he worked with Coetzee, so now we have a BIG fetcher (aka not Brussow) to step in. Vermeulen can easily play blindside. I'd like to see Whiteley rewarded for his play in Wellington, with a start at 8 in Cape Town. Burger off the bench?

Chan Wee The biggest losers are going to be Indian, mixed-race, Coloureds, and immigrants. The ANC is defining purity again; like the Nationalists before them. Not a strategy designed to encourage investment or retain talent or interracial families or build a rainbow narrative or adhere to moral principles. Might makes right; and the "international community" not only excuses it, there are I'll-informed apologists using facile rationale they'd NEVER accept as universal morality. Inclusivity is the key; not purity of "Africanness."

@ Johnno : "" Toulon owner Mourad Boudjellal has revealed that Leigh Halfpenny's contract could be terminated over his injury problems. Halfpenny is yet to make his debut for the club due to a groin injury picked up in pre-season. The Wales and Lions star missed the end of last season with an arm injury, but fully recovered following surgery. However the groin problem that has kept Halfpenny watching from the stands is one that Boudjellal suspects the player was carrying when he arrived at the club. Initially treated on a weekly basis, Halfpenny may now need surgery on his groin which could rule him out for months, much to Boudjellal's obvious frustration. "Today, we must address this issue because we need a world-class goalkicker. We're awaiting the medical update," Boudjellal told Varmatin. "He should be out for another two or three weeks. But the problem that we have now is that we think he may have arrived at Toulon with that injury. Now we have the impression that yes, he was injured when he signed for Toulon. If this is the case, we haven't ruled out terminating his contract. " "We pay enough for players (when they're away) for their national teams. We don't feel like preparing Halfpenny for the Rugby World Cup for Wales. "We're conducting an investigation. I will know the whys and hows this week." Meanwhile, Boudjellal has also demanded that Springboks Bryan Habana, Bakkies Botha and Argentina flank Juan Martín Fernández Lobbe return to club or face not being paid. The trio are currently on intrnational duty Rugby Championship, but with no Tests scheduled for this weekend, Boudjellal wants his player available in the Top 14. "There is something that is quite simple - they defend the colours of their country and are paid rather comfortably by Toulon," he said. "The IRB decided the rules. That's fine but I'm not here to fund South African and Argentine rugby and I will not. "These players will return as we need them. If they do not and we receive no fee, they will not be paid by us because they will not be present in Toulon. "We'll see if the rules of the IRB prevail or if it is the rules of the Labour Code for French private enterprise. In any case, it is an aberration. "We have reached a stage where we have to ask the opinion of the French law. Therefore, we will ask the French judges whether a foreign federation has the right to take my employees and force me to pay them. "It's just unthinkable we have players who are paid very well by us but cannot not play them. Moreover, I have to pay the players replacing them. This is a double sanction." He surely likes the media highlights as this is not the first time he made a controvercial or attention grabbing statement. (a couple of months ago he talked of Rugger Galcticos coming to Toulon after RWC). however , in the case of Leigh H, doesnt it sound very suspicious that the club did not know he was injured? For example the EPL footy clubs carry out extensive medical checkup and fitness checks before signing a million pound player. there have been players who were not signed due to fitness issues. am sure the position of "caveat emptor" prevails in that case. simillarly doesn't he know of the country commitments of international players? and also the required player welfare such as minimum time off before playing after long travel? also these are tests in the calendar and nothing fixed outside it. it is not as if someone made a phone call 24 hours before. he is just being an eccentric rich owner and trying to act like the clowns who own footy clubs. there are quite a few in French club rugger it seems.
