Dayne Beams asks to be traded to Queensland club

By The Roar / Editor

Collingwood player Dayne Beams has requested for a trade to a Queensland AFL club according to a statement made by the Magpies today.

Beams, who has played 110 games for Collingwood at the top level since being drafted in 2008, has expressed his preference to return to his home state, meaning he would be picked up by one of Gold Coast or Brisbane.

Beams has been one of the stars of Collingwood’s season, managing to average 27 disposals through the season, right up there with talisman Dane Swan.

He is clearly seen as crucial to the Magpies’ plans, as they have expressed in the statement their desire to keep Beams on the roster.

As we know from multiple incidents like this in all codes in Australia, attempting to keep a homesick player or one who wants to return to be closer to his family is a difficult proposition. His youth and ability, however, mean that he has become crucial to Collingwood’s plans, particularly as Swan gets closer to the end of his sparkling career.

The full statement from Collingwood is below:

Collingwood midfielder Dayne Beams has asked to be traded back to his home state, Queensland.

Beams, 24, is contracted to Collingwood for 2015 but explained that for family reasons he is keen to return to the state he was drafted from in 2008.

While sympathetic to the personal circumstances outlined to the club, Collingwood intends to retain Beams and will seek to help him best deal with these circumstances while continuing to play for Collingwood.

Collingwood Director of Football, Rodney Eade, outlined the club’s position.

“We want Dayne to stay,” Eade said.

“We understand his personal situation and will be working with him and his management, as we do all our players, to find an outcome that may give him more time with his family and remain a Collingwood player for 2015 and beyond.”

Out of respect to Grand Final week and the two competing teams, Collingwood will be making no further comment on this matter.

Lets not trade away our culture again and it all fall through, get it right this time! Bradshaw, riscatelli and voss, that hurt! Beams is a great player and I would love him at the lions but at the end of the day his only one player, culture is more important.

The headline says : Dayne Beams asks to be traded to QUEENSLAND club But it seems that Brisbane are the only QUEENSLAND club genuinely interested.

I, like many other posters here, suspect that Beams has been dealing exclusively with the Lions at this moment with a move to the Gabba his preferred destination. The factors of playing with his brother and the huge salary cap space that the Lions currently have spare would be probably put them in front at this stage. The Suns have an emerging midfield that will all command bigger contracts in the next couple of seasons as well as having the best player in the competition on their list. In addition to this they need to get their list down to regulation AFL size and also reduce their salary cap accordingly. What I find hypocritical from the Victorian clubs, and this happens nearly every other year, is that they have no problem luring players back to Melbourne from an interstate club and playing hardball with the other club in question. They prey on the player wanting to return to VIC and usually the interstate Club gets what they are given. One of the few recent examples I can think of which was a win-win was the Chris Judd / Josh Kennedy and Pick 3 Carlton/West Coast trade in 2007. Yet when the shoe is on the other foot and a player wants to head to a club outside of VIC the VIC clubs act like a jealous prat and demand that they receive everything under the sun in return for that player. The Lions need a big name player to join the Club and Beams is certainly that. It would be good for the game and good for AFL in Queensland for this trade to happen.

With Ball, Lumumba and Beams now joining the massive exodus of talent from Collingwood, and recruits either out and out duds like Lynch, Jordan, Young and White or crocks like Scharenberg who cannot manage to get onto the park, Pies supporters are facing bottom 6 finishes during 2015 and 2016 at best. Look out for the Buckley blame game accusation of players 'not standing up' in defence of his obvious incompetence when the knives come out for him.

Beams is a sensational player, especially on the outside where he can really slice teams open and hit the scoreboard hard. With Martin lording it in the ruck, and Rockliff and Redden winning clearances and dishing it out the the likes of Beams, Rich and Hanley, Brisbane's midfield would be as good as any in the comp.

Let him go, if his father is that sick, he needs to be near him. Make sure that he goes to the Lions and not Suns. They get enough of a leg up from the AFL as it is.. Get a high draft pick and do a couple of good trades, do not bring in duds like we have over the past couple of years.

Ha ha! Yeah, predictions made before New Years Day don't count, everybody knows that! Brisbane to win the next four premierships and Dayne Beams to present Lewis Taylor with the 2016 Brownlow Medal!

There's room for everyone. Probably Sydney, though. Over rated! Premiership/smemiership...as if that means anything. Nah...c'mon allow TomC and co to have a touch of joy.

It is the trade process I am referring to... being to aggressive which may prevent a trade from occurring. Given the enforced coaching handover by Eddie, clubs are capable of being pretty brutal to their own.

Happy to welcome them back, so long as they bring their wallets with them. If Beams buys us a few more memberships and another sponsor or two then he pays for himself.

Where is our COLA payments? Isn't that the reason that the teams outside Melbourne get compensated to encourage players to stay with teams instead of going back home? Let Beams go home just make sure we get well compensated for him.

Eddie said players should go to smaller clubs like Buddy to the Dogs. When Jolly wanted to go back to Victoria, the swans let him and did a deal with guess who - Pies and won a premiership - now the boot is on other foot lets see Eddie be hypocritical yet again...
