[VIDEO] Brisbane Roar vs Melbourne City highlights: A-League scores

By Shane Jones / Roar Guru

MATCH RESULT:

Melbourne City record their first victory of the season with a 3-1 win over last year’s champions, Brisbane Roar.

Who would have thought that after five rounds of the A-League, the two Grand Finalists from last year, are both at the bottom of the ladder with 0 wins for the season?

That is the situation we are dealt with after Brisbane suffered their fourth straight loss of the season against Melbourne City tonight.

Despite having more possession, more shots, more corners, more passes, and more crosses than City, the Roar lost out on the scoreboard.

Two goals in the first ten minutes to City provided the perfect start for the away team and the held on despite a late comeback from the Roar.

For City, their weaknesses stood up tonight.

Ramsay played well at left back, they played consistent football for 90 minutes, and their forwards finally scored.

WIlliams and Dugandzic both scored tonight for the first time this season.

As for the Roar? Are they in a crisis? You’d almost say yes after tonight.

The pressure will be put on Mulvey now and it doesn’t help when Stefanutto and Young are having a heated conversation after the match.

That isn’t a good sight for the club, the fans, or the sponsors.

They must now regroup again before playing Newcastle next Friday night.

This week is a big week for the club.

Final Score
Melbourne: 3 – Williams 8′, Dugandzic 10′, Marino 83′
Brisbane: 1 – Borrello 67′

MATCH PREVIEW:

After a week off, and some soul searching by the club, Brisbane Roar will be looking for their first victory of the season against Melbourne City tonight.

Join The Roar for live scores and commentary of the match from 7:15pm AEDT.

It hasn’t been a great start for the defending champions with the Roar at the bottom of the table after three straight losses to start the season.

To make matters worse, Liam Miller was released by the club, after falling out with Mike Mulvey during their first match of the season.

Miller, who played an integral part in last year’s championship, will be missed by the Roar who are struggling for goals this year.

They have only scored three goals this season with two of them coming against the Glory in Round 2.

In the same period of time, they have conceded seven goals; three against Perth and two against both Sydney and Adelaide.

While it isn’t crisis time at Brisbane yet, they need to start getting results, to maintain touching distance with the top six

They have the perfect opportunity to gain their first points of the season against a team who is also struggling for results.

Melbourne City have also yet to win a game this season but have secured two draws to sit in seventh place at the start of the weekend.

Like Brisbane, they have also had a player leave the club, with David Villa finishing his guest stint with the club.

City didn’t waste time replacing him though, signing Socceroo Josh Kennedy on a two year deal.

Kennedy, who has been capped 33 times by the Socceroos, is not in the squad to take on the Roar and will join the squad sometime soon.

Goals, consistency, and a fit left back, have all been issues for City this year.

City has only scored five goals in four games with two of them coming from the boot of David Villa.
With no Villa – or Kennedy – in the team the responsibility for goals falls on Mate Dugandzic, David Williams and Damian Duff.

With no goals scored by these three players so far this season, it looks like City will struggle for goals tonight.

Consistency has also been an issue for City with the team struggling to play for the full 90 minutes. Against the Victory, in Round 3, they played well for 45 minutes, before falling away in the second half.

Last week against Adelaide, they did the same, falling away in the last 30 minutes as the Reds scored and won the game.

You can’t do that against the good teams and Brisbane will punish City tonight if they are complacent. City has made plenty of changes to the squad for the match against Brisbane, with injury having a big impact on the squad.

Massimo Murdocca is out with a groin injury with Jonatan Germano – hamstring – joining him on the sidelines.
They are replaced by Iain Ramsey, James Brown, Nick Kalmar, Stefan Mauk and Marc Marino who have been promoted to the squad.

Iain Ramsey will have an important role to play at left back as City look to find someone to fill the void of Germano in that position.

Germano – who missed the first two games of the season – re-injured himself last week and is now out for up to four weeks.

Ramsey struggled to make the left back position his own in the first two games and must now fill the position again as City deal with no options in that position.

This is an area the Roar will try to expose through their forwards.

The Roar welcome back Matt McKay for the match after he served his suspension for getting a red card against Adelaide in Round 1.

Corey Brown and Daniel Bowles also join the squad.

This looks to be a perfect match for Brisbane to gain some form back.

They face a City squad decimated by injury, and have players who want to prove a point to the rest of the A-League.

Thomas Broich and Matt McKay in particular will want to have a big influence in this match. Henrique, who plays his 100th A-League match, will also want to go out a winner in his milestone match.

City – under the Melbourne Heart – also has a poor record at Suncorp Stadium.

In seven matches between the two at the venue, City has only won once at the venue, with Brisbane winning five times.

I see that continuing tonight and the Roar to provide their fans with a victory for the first time this season.

PREDICTION – 2-0 Brisbane.

Redmayne is only the current keeper because of his youth not for his ability or incompetence the fact that he has never saved a penalty should tell people something isnt right there in a-league land but right now i'm as tight as an owl after drinking a whole bottle of pinot grigio and having my mind blown by the movie 'Interstellar"

I think the expectation of city to win the lot/contend was ridiculous from the start. They need a whole new back 4 maybe Kisnorbo can stay, a striker(which they may finally have in Kennedy) and maybe a keeper(jury's still out on redmayne). None of this could be done in the amount of time since the takeover.

What did you mean by "Mulvey to live by his sword and die by his sword." if not you want Mulvey out if Brisbane doesn't win something this season?

Try 2 points with Villa in 4(if you want to count the derby as a game he 'played' in)

Mulvey won't solve this unless he changes his ways and approach. He has proven even during the good times that he is a creature of habit and those old habits will die very hard!

How the mighty have fallen . Last year's Champs can't muster a win and a win doesn't look eminent, their passing was shocking and panicky at times, couldn't pass out of their own half,an interesting case for Mulvey to solve. I feel City were overawed by Villa's presence, when and when not to pass the ball to him, key factors .. If the Jets had Taggart still there they could've won that match today, although they're disorganised. . Great game by Adelaide and Sydney last night, the Drive By's looked ordinary as usual ...

As was I. I don't for one second blame Young, but I also don't believe he's A-League standard. Nor is Steff any longer.

Temporary gains they will be if we don't get wins on the board. So in four games we get 4 pts with Villa on board and in just one game without him we get 3. Don't get me wrong, loved seeing him play, was a joy to watch, but many of our spud players just don't know how to play alongside a champion. Maybe it could have been a hellovalot better if he had have been here for a full pre-season and got to gel with the other players. Anyway, the caravan moves on.

What worries me most is the almost certain prospect of complete humiliation in the ACL. Just have to hope he can turn it around,

So, if Brisbane perform badly this season, all the good work Mulvey did last season is ignored & he should be sacked? Do players also have to be accountable? Thought Broich was the key & Berisha was a bit player?
