Petition to get Scott Allen out of retirement

By Kane / Roar Guru

The title of this article says it all. Scott Allen has been retired for three hours and we already need him back.

Enough signatures and surely The Roar can dangle a carrot big enough to bring him back.

Here are some of the comments from his retirement article, as well as some tweets from well wishers.

If you want Scott to know about this, let him know on Twitter @ScottA_.

Or share it on Facebook.

Scott, I ask that you reconsider. Perhaps, a monthly analysis, at least. If not, I will miss your pieces very much. The ROAR is poorer for your leaving. You have always been a gentleman when responding to demagogues and pests. Harry Jones

It will be a big loss if you stopped writing your analysis Scott, as a prop my knowledge around analysing and understanding backline play needs as much information as I can possibly get. Even though I am just a rugby fan my hunger for knowledge is always there and can never be satisfied, in South Africa I have high regard for John Mitchell who grace our Supersport studio during Super XV, Currie Cup and Whenever there is a NZ test match on.

I love listening to him sharing his vast knowledge on the game and teams and try not to miss what he has to say.

Although I don’t always comment on your articles purely because sometimes it is just better to read and not comment I never miss any of your analysis as I have learnt a hell of a lot from them. It has changed the way I review our Springboks.

It is rare to find in depth analysis anywhere and you have become y must read every week.

I understand your irritation with snarky and petty comments but implore you to at least continue to share your rugby philosophies with us as they are invaluable to me at least.

If you don’t want to interact with us I can respect that, but do please reconsider.

If you choose to leave us, best of luck in your future endeavours.

Dear Scott
What sad loss to rugby journalism and analysis. The more I read your articles the more I enjoy your deep perspective on the game. The partisan masses, will always deride and divide according to tribe. I am now living in Scotland and thankfully the state divide seems a distant memory. No one here cares about super rugby and our Wallaby team is the face of rugby over here.

I agree we must forget our obsession with ‘running rugby’ and concentrate on creating a universally competitive team which plays the game required to win. We have been sold a on a myth about Australian rugby having to deliver some form of Harlem Globe Trotteresque tradition, this in my living memory did not exist. I grew up watching from the late 70s and we struggled to win against the All Blacks aside from those periods you mentioned in your final article. When we did win our scrum and tight play was exemplary and paved our way to success. This platform allowed the likes of Ella, Horan, and Campese the space required to ply there many talents. These fools that have a go of you sadly have lost sight of these facts.

Good luck into the future.

The Roar have obviously lost a good man. I’ve never felt the urge to send a comment until now, mainly because the rugby journalism at The Roar, particularly with you at it’s helm, has upheld the highest quality possible and my words would have been superfluous.

My passionate following of the Wallabies during the last 30 years from within the cultural confines of Germany has been regularly dowsed with disappointment since 2003, mainly through the decline in Australian rugby of what I’d term “athletic intelligence”, as well as the inherent culture of the sport itself. These two qualities are obviously prevalent in the rugby of the All Blacks.

I’ve felt that you, dear Scott, have been addressing exactly these things in a very intelligent, fair and open manner, of course with your own terminology. I can only hope that your wise words on Australian rugby will take effect immediately. Even better, you should apply for a position on the coaching staff of the Wallabies. They need someone with your insights right now!

Another song “if you leave me can I come too?”

Scott you realise just how much try rugby tragics are simply devastated by this? Please reconsider. Your work was getting close to being the only reason I stayed with Roar. You and Brett anyway.

I will never forget watching your blokes playing in the scrum for Bris City. I just knew who their coach was. This is extraordinary that a numpty like me could pick this from your writing.

Bloody sad day. Quite seriously this just reduced my enjoyment a notch.

Thank you for all you have done.

Fantastic analysis always. Scott's writings are brilliant for true rugby fans and would love him to keep on writing as I have never seen a better analysis. Would love Scott to keep on writing even once a month.

Where is this up to? what can be done to change Scott's mind on this?? Scott, your insights will be deeply missed and I wonder what can be done to bring back the fun for you? I know rugby has its own "trolls" that have soured your experience but I promise you that they're out-weighed by the majority of us who are huge fans of the game and of your contributions and we'd be the much poorer for your early retirement if you wont reconsider.... Hope you get the love back over Xmas and let me extend our thanks to you for your contributions this year form which we've gained so much value. Tim

Patrick the Roar provides a wonderful forum and please don't let a bit of negative attitude from some contributors get in your way. 55% to 45% in national politics is considered a landslide so please dont take it as unusual that some disagree with you no matter how hard you try to be correct or take a principled stand, I will sign any call to get Scott Allen back and would happily pay to read his work.

CORRECTED SPELLING - why does the 'correct your comment' not work? Thought: In recent weeks I realised I was spending too much time reading comments on the Roar. Then I noticed so many comments were showing childish or negative ego that I thought maybe better to avoid site all togehter. I came back, and the first (no, second) article from Scott I jumped on, was his decision to leave the site. My first response was sadness, but as of this arvo, I realised the coincidence of my ‘reader’s obs’ paralleling Scott’s own (not merely for me re his columns, but more widely). Long time since an elder school captain at my Jack private school spoke, on the school’s sad ‘mocking culture’. It’s sad to see the same nihilism so evident in un-constructive anonymous critiques on this site. This site has too many complete nobs who are not apparently that they are (or in any event, behave in the manner of) nobs. As a society issue, I wonder of ‘blog sites’ will develop respectful community etiquettes over time. At risk of sounding quite a wonker (spelling?) if a blog site covering ‘gentlemen’s games’ of rugby and cricket can’t manage that positive ethos, who can? Here’s hoping the Bears do come back to NSO one day. Then I can forgo Wallabies, or trying to understand soccer/AFL! Cheers Peter (real name, but there are many of us for me to hide amongst) Robinson

Scott, your well thought out analysis will be sorely missed....I am a great fan of yours & I looked forward to your post each week & learnt so much about the scrum as well as rugby tactics. ARU should have your expertise locked up into the Wallys coaching staff. Hope you have a relaxing break over the summer & reconsider.... possibly writing some occasional articles.....just remember, there are many of us who never post on here but still enjoy reading & appreciating your great insight into the game.Best wishes,Duke.

Scott -- I really hope you will reconsider. Your analysis is one of the very best things The Roar does. I'm very sorry if trolls or trolling has put you off writing. Perhaps the mediator should enforce some standards at a higher level? But so much comes in... Have a good summer and think about it -- the RWC year will be a big one and your thinking would really help me and lots of others understand what's happening better. Good luck Hugh

Scott is one of the very few writers that I read religiously on the Roar, and it seems to me that the nature of some comments on his articles have contributed to his decision to retire. Isn't the solution to treat Scott with the respect he deserves and not allow comments to his articles? Let's face it he doesn't do "posts" in the true sense, he writes thoughtful, insightful Articles, much more like a true journalist than a poster. For the sake of allowing large numbers of people the opportunity of enjoying and learning from his writing, don't allow comments. This concept may fly in the face of the Roar concept, but let's bend the rules on this one. Cheers Dave

No, no, no, no, you would instantly sterilise the whole blog, numbers would crash and advertising would stop. That is why they won't do it. I don't want my views, which are genuinely held, to be used against me. Some of us have jobs that require that. For goodness sake, it's an OPINION site, get it?
