Injured Pocock ruled out of Chiefs clash

Star Brumbies flanker David Pocock has been ruled out of Friday’s Super Rugby clash with the Chiefs after picking up an ankle injury.

Pocock is expected to spend the next few weeks on the sidelines after receiving the grade-one syndesmosis (high ankle) injury during Friday’s season-opening win over the Queensland Reds in Canberra.

It was Pocock’s first Super Rugby game in almost 12 months after tearing his ACL for the second time in two years, and he marked the occasion with a man-of-the-match performance.

The star No.7 did not train with the Brumbies’ squad on Monday, but is hoping to get his ankle right for a quick return to the field.

“Obviously it’s a disappointing outcome and not what I wanted, having spent a long time out,” Pocock said.

“But it’s treatable and I know I’m in good hands here with the Brumbies medical team.”

Coach Stephen Larkham said it was disappointing for Pocock but he expected him back at full fitness soon.

“It’s definitely a blow for Dave, having worked so hard to get back to full fitness and then to have played as well as he did on Friday,” Larkham said.

“But it’s a long season, this is contact sport and these sorts of injuries are quite common.

“It’s in no way related to his knee and we are going to approach it week by week to see when he’s ok to play again.

“While he’d rather be on the flight to New Zealand with the team than rehabbing in a moonboot, we are optimistic he’ll be back soon.”

Oh c'mon. He's hardly played in two years. If you think he's going to come out and turn it on like he did last time for the Wallabies, then you've never played, nor watched much sport of any kind.

Yeh, would've put him in if he was still playing. Such a shame, he was a wonderful player.

Yeh, Smith impressed me as well, coming back for the Brumbies in 2013.

Here we go again! Must assume he's not a regular and make plans accordingly. But I wish him well S T

Steve ferris was another good player who was always broken. I think he has officially retired now.

George Smith is almost as impressive. Although, Richie has 3 - 4 odd years of extra international rugby on Smith.

44bottles, you are forgetting Law 17.4(h) If a player loiters at the side of a maul, the player is offside, but if he wears number 7 and plays for New Zealand, he must not be harmed in any way. Sanction: Incessant abuse from people with funny accents.

All 4. Fainga'a was excellent against the Rebels. Gill did well in a dominated side and pack. Alcock was good and so was Hooper.

Apologies Westie. Just so sick of the irrational Pocock lauding. He's a good enough player that people don't need to make up good things about him.

TWAS my comment was directed at the original post not your response. The original poster has theme of criticising hooper at all costs and declared prior to the season that pocock will replace him so it is in his interests to talk up poey's performance on the weekend to support his agenda.

Really TWAS? Name one of those guys who was even close to Pocock's performance on the weekend? Alcock maybe at best...

It's petty to have an agenda to want to see player's performances considered objectively?

Pocock forced some penalties for holding on (and at vital times), if they let go they would of been pilfers. Outplayed Gill easily.

That's why I'm so impressed with McCaw lasting into his 30s. You'd expect a Front/2nd Rower or a 1st 5 to be able to last that long, but not a flanker.
