[VIDEO] Cronulla Sharks vs Brisbane Broncos highlights: NRL scores

By Mitchell Carman / Roar Rookie

The Cronulla Sharks and the Brisbane Broncos will both be looking to redeem themselves when they clash at Remondis Stadium. Join The Roar from 8:30pm (AEDT) for live scores and commentary.

The Sharks came into the season with top-eight aspirations after a disappointing season in 2014. However, they faced a minor setback last week when they were defeated by the Raiders in a game most expected them to win.

They will be looking to turn it around against a Broncos team who were disappointing against the Rabbitohs in Brisbane last week.

The big talking point coming into this game is the relegation of Sam Thaiday to the bench. Wayne Bennet was very critical of the Queensland and Australian representative after their loss to the Rabbitohs and has made a bold decision by dropping him to the bench.

Neither side welcomes back any key players, so they will be looking for improvement from similar squads rather than a spark from an incoming player.

This game already holds extra significance even at this early part of the season as no side wants to start with a 0-2 record, especially for the Sharks having played both at home.

The Broncos hold the overall advantage in the head-to-head record but not by much. The last time the two met the Sharks produced a shock 24-22 upset win and the Broncos will be looking for revenge.

Both teams have strong packs and the battle of the forwards might decide the game, but the clash of the fullbacks-cum-five-eighths will be intriguing. Both Ben Barba and Anthony Milford set the competition on fire with their brilliance from the back of the defensive line, they have now joined the frontline and are attempting to lead their respective sides around the field. Neither player has made any major impact in their short careers as halves and both will be looking to change that tonight.

Prediction
Both teams were far too disappointing in Round 1 to tip with any confidence, but the Sharks were just so poor against a weak Raiders team, so I am going with the Broncos by four points.

Who will bounce back and register their first win of the 2015 season? Join us The Roar from 8:30pm (AEDT) for live scores and commentary to find out.

It was hard enough watching the recorded game and fast forwarding through the crap......which didn't leave a lot of the game to watch. Absolutely woeful

Don't feel too bad Bob, it is always going to take some time to mould a team. We need a big forward aka Fafita / Prichard, Bennett knows that and almost had Packer. In the old days he went for Harrigan missed out but got Lazarus. Hunt, although getting mom last night is still a bit hit and miss - a couple of sessions with A. Johns wouldn't go astray. Be patient with Milford, I can understand frustrations abound after Barba's failure but they are two entirely different players and I am sure after a few games he will show the class that made R.Stuart bend over backwards to keep him at the Raiders. All in all it was a respectable defensive effort by Brisbane and you may want to compare the Dragons side that Bennett prepared when he first arrived. He built up their defense firstly followed by their attacking game and the rest is history. Safe to say we are rebuilding so expect some changes each week and be patient.

Hate to say it but Bennett does have his favourites and Maranta's grandfather hired him initially Can't see any other reason - he always had big wingers and Vidot foots that bill - others are making mistakes but he doesn't drop them. Go figure.

Can't blame people for not showing up to watch this dribble. This was an absolute disgrace of a game, both teams should be ashamed of themselves and the NRL should be ashamed of the refs as usual. Sharks out of the NRL now!

I was thinking the same thing about standing deeper. Particularly Milford. He seemed to get pummelled as he was getting the ball. Thaiday off the bench worked well. If you look at the great Broncos teams, they had benches that came on and lfted the performance of the side. I felt that happened last night. Bennett is Bennett and we aren't going to get a free running attack based game plan this year. Because it won't work. They need to build combinations and get the little things right. While it was a dour match there were enough positives. Boyd will add another dimension. 2 year plan. Next year I reckon you will see the backline lok like this. Boyd, J. Nikorima, Gagai, Hodges, Kahu,Milford, Hunt. I also think we will get a big name forward sign on. Glenn can go. If they are paying Maranta more than the base rate he can go too. But he won't. His dad built the club. Maybe Teo will come back. Klemmer would be nice. Even Sika Manu. They have got to have room in the cap.

I think he's been dropped due to the mistakes he makes in the clutch. We could really use him to help out our forwards but Bennett seems to be of the opinion that he can't have someone who makes poor decisions late in close games. (Running in on the Wigan centre springs to mind.) It's a tough call on the bloke because he's usually so good over the first 70 minutes, but it's a skill that can't be coached and maybe getting dropped will make him work on cutting out those late game errors.

Good evaluation. In the big picture there is no way in the world this team will win anything. Have one of the worst yet highest paid #6 in the comp. We have a second rower on one wing, and someone arguably not top-grade material on the other. One decent winger in Vidot is out of the team and being repurposed as a prop. Front row is getting pummelled in meters. Inside the wingers, Hodges and Reed both offer little in attack and are rather slow. One of the best players in Parker is getting half a game. Ignoring the lack of set players and structure, I have no idea what Bennett is even aiming for, people playing out of position everywhere with no benefit. That right hand edge is the only one I can see really working in attack - Hunt, Thaiday, Gillet, Hodges, Vidot would be good. Hodges is still good one on one, all you need is enough to get the winger to hesitate and come in to make the gap. Thaiday and Gillet can be decoys or good runners. Hunt has a good dummy and go. There's quite a lot of combos they could do on that edge. I would even have Milford as a roaming fullback in attack, one thing he does have is pace and agility. Anyway that's my 2 cents :)

Also - I don't know what has happened between Bennett and Vidot but we need his meters.

Hi WDD - agree with alot of that. Thoughts I had on the Broncos last night: 1 If Thaiday got dropped to the bench for his penalties last week, Glenn should be sent to reserve grade for his push on Barba in the build up to the disallowed Reed try. Ridiculous stuff. He made other errors as well; 2 McCullough's dummy half play seems to be regressing. Seemed to send a few guys running straight back into the markers. Milford looks lost. 3 He's a tryer but I just don't think Maranta is NRL standard. Positives were obviously Hunt and I thought Blair, Thaiday and MacGuire were reasonably solid.

They were all horrible is probably a bit harsh. I was happy with Kahu and Reed was ok for a change. Not sure why Parker is getting such reduced minutes (maybe just Bennett trying to pace him in the early season but damn it wayne you're killing my fantasy). Gillett injury looks bad, but he looked pretty bad all night really. Wasn't running good lines and failing to make metres consistently. McGuire had a decent little battle with Gallen. Really started to get under Gallens skin over the last 30 minutes. Joe O was quiet in his debut. Glenn was terrible. Missed tackles, stupid penalties, simple mistakes, and ruining what should've been the only non scrappy try of the game. Milford was again better than last week though that's not saying much. I think Brisbane need to attack from further out with a player like Milford. He looked a lot more dangerous when Brisbane were just entering the sharks half and getting some second phase going. At least he isn't putting in kicks for negative metres is all I can say. Hunt doesn't need an evaluation. He was a bright spot in a dour match in both attack and defence. Maranta was quiet and didn't offer much in terms of metres gained hping out the forwards. Did well to take that catch at silly mid off for his try though. Catches win matches. Oates was serviceable on the wing. Good hands to pick up Reeds grounded pass. I think if he received a bit better ball at certain times he would've come close to scoring a few more times. Jaryd Wallace was good. Made metres and made some great tackles. Not much more you want from a prop. Hodges was a rock in defence after his early slip up that nearly resulted in a cronulla try (Ben Hunt the saviour). Wasn't great on the attacking end though. He just looked a step slow. Nikorima played well. Really sparked some attacking flair (which isn't saying too much for that game) into Brisbane when he came on. McCoullough wasn't great. Needs to take on the line more. Happy to see him kicking though and they were good kicks which make it better. Needs to pick his moments better for the niggle though. He was unlucky with a couple of the calls against him but he should know better. Made 53 tackles with no misses so can't criticise his effort. Blair was solid I thought. Made tackles. Didn't have any brain explosion stupid penalties (that I can recall) late in sets. Not taking enough runs though. Made terrible metres although the few runs he did take he made tough metres. Thaiday was much better this week. Came on after 15 minutes and played the rest of the game. Much better from him after last week. Does he get a try assist for knocking the snot out of Feki for the second try? In all honesty though that collision looked more in place with the NFL. Good stop that one and a key example of what can come from putting in on the kick chase. Brisbane in general need to stand deeper in attack. It gives their playmakers more time and space and more importantly it let's them run onto the ball rather than wait for it putting the opposition on the back foot straight away. Bennett being Bennett though will continue to stress defence until he's happy with where it is before he worries too much about attack. After tonight he seemed happy enough so maybe over the next month or so we'll see improvement in that area. One thing I know, we aren't going to beat many teams making 50+ extra tackles each game. Need to sort out those silly mistakes at the play the ball.

I agree it was an ordinary game, but one positive for me was Kahu's performance. Took some good catches and looked threatening in defence. Much improved and honestly would have been my choice for the three points. Milford was terrible and he and Barba seem to be striving to prove who can play more poorly. I think Milford won that battle last night. Long way to go

I didn't watch the second game on tv, don't think I watch many of the second games. I think they should drop the second Friday night game, bring back Saturday afternoon footy (not that I will watch it but fans will turn up).

One thing for certain from last night is that Gallen is still on top of his..... There is no forward in the game that can do what he does. I feel sorry for the pack, they've belted the opposition forwards both weeks but the backs just aren't getting it right....

$7.50 Broncos to win premiership. Now out to $17 only two games in. There's a long way to go but geez.

Not a lot of thought about cohesion when putting this Sharks side together.

Both teams abysmal - seriously what have they been practicing all summer? Worst Broncos team of all time and the Sharks, wow, another long season for their long suffering fans. Sharks need a complete 'Penrith style' roster clean out! Baabaa must have a chronic injury, he is just slow, no spark of yesteryear!

Agreed. Nobody in their right mind would watch a game with so many ads unless it was your own team. If they only got 8k to the match because of the weather they would only have 8k watching due to all the ads. Both sides will improve as the year marches on and fans need to be patient.

Next week Storm down there..this side as it stands cant win..really doubt its an early season thing any more than it is just lazy, unmotivated play..the backs are just wrong..put Barba back to where his glory was born, fullback and last chance..Mick G.wing with Valentine..Beale and Bird..Todd Murphy and the rest as is...law needs to be laid down to Fifita too.. no more kid gloves coach..
