49ers coach speaks highly of Jarryd Hayne

By The Roar / Editor

San Fransisco 49ers head coach Jim Tomsula has provided some of the most in-depth insight into his impression of Jarryd Hayne since the former NRL star signed a contract with the NFL franchise.

Tomsula spoke highly of Hayne, and in particular how excited he was by having someone on his roster who was ‘the guy’ in another code.

“The other thing that gets me too, that excites me, he is ‘the guy’ in Australia. Lawrence (Okoye) was ‘the guy’ in England. You were all huddled around a table to talk to them.

“They were the best at what they were doing and in both situations they walk away from that to start something new, to start at the bottom. That hits me. That’s something different about who you are and your make up.

“There’s a lot of courage involved right there – or you’re flat nuts. Either way, that could work for us, right?

“He’s playing a position that’s not like anything else he’s done. Everything is completely brand new. That’s a hard transition.

“When you get to a guy playing rugby and his skillset is as a running back – that’s where we’ll start him, I’m not going to tell you that’s where he’ll end – you’ve got a guy who’s used to being down field catching a ball with people running at him.

“You’ve got a guy who’s used to making tackles in open spaces. You’ve got a guy who’s used to catching the ball, carrying the ball, being in open space and avoiding. Obviously with the explosive qualities that he has, you can’t help but be excited.”

Hayne will continue to train with the 49ers over the coming weeks in an attempt to earn himself a contract for the upcoming NFL season.

I'm a dragons fan and I love hearing this story. Hayne is an all star in my books. If he makes the cut I'll be repingin a 49'ers jersey with Hayne on the back. On another note lets see some NFL players lose the padding and come over to the NRL.

I also don't know why this topic fascinates me. But it surely does. The other day I was in an depth yarn with a Canadian backpacker and you guessed it we spent a good half hour talking about it. Being a canuk he had no idea about the rugbys' but he knew it was a huge step out of ones comfort zone.

Echo the thoughts of Up in the North, the Roar has a heading for US Sport so can all the Jarryd Hayne tragics please start posting these stories under that banner and leave the NRL to those actually playing in the competition. Sick of seeing daily updates on how JH is training, adapting to the NFL etc. Good luck to him but you guys have to move on. Does he have a contract with the Sydney media to give them exclusives on his daily activities.

Mate, waaaay too different a game to even compare NFL quarterbacks to League halves or backs. Completely different set of skills developed over decades.

I reckon this is a terrific story, maybe it's relevence on an NRL thread is that he has gone to a code that is so far removed from Australia that it could be on the moon. I loved the way he was welcomed at Parras first game, imagine any other code hopper being embraced by the fans like that, after having moved on.

You seem to be a bit higher on that richter scale of who cares, as you clicked the link, read the article and commented down the bottom.

hope he makes it, but until then it's a story that's not making me get excited. He's gone and now, he's gone. Tedesco, Moylan, Kata and several others get my attention way more than Jared's story. But also it would be nice to have him back.

I recall that Beau reminded Erin that the Footy show is a Footy show and so is this bit of the Roar! This does not leave me bored and disinterested as a story it simply leaves me comatose on the Richter scale of who the hell cares! I wonder how Bradley Wiggins would cope at Wimbledon?

It will not come as a surprise to me that Hayne will make the transition, there are at least a dozen more AFL, NRL & Super Rugby players who could well and truly - giving everything falls into place – succeed. The average punter see obstacles however instinctive Footballers (not footballing athletes) removes what your skeptic voices as difficult. Now, that’s not to say learning the playbook easy, guys like Hayne will simplified plays by processing instinctive routines - Meaning, if Hayne is lining up in I formation reading to blast through a 3 hole, Jarred mindset will be to keep it simple and use his evasive instincts to concentrate on finding a seam & daylight same will applied on a kick return. The key to the Hayne transition is to avoid information overload, just take what he needs & trust his peripheral instincts.
