Shane Warne cops social media pasting for being thirsty

By The Roar / Editor

Shane Warne was thirsty after the Aussies won the Cricket World Cup final on Sunday night. Very thirsty.

In fact, he was so thirsty, he went around asking all the Aussie players after the game if they were thirsty too.

“Are you feeling thirsty?,” he asked of wicketkeeper Brad Haddin.

To Josh Hazlewood and Shane Watson:

“So what’s the plan – besides lots of drink and that. How long is that going to last. Just one night, two nights? We saw (coach) Darren Lehmann say it might last a week. Do you reckon it will go a bit longer than that?

“Go and enjoy yourselves guys. Hopefully we’ll join you for a few.”

To Steve Smith: “Are you going to have a bit of a drink tonight too Smitty? Are you going to get thirsty as well? The boys are thirsty they seem,” Warne asked.

It wasn’t just Warnie though, with Mark Nicholas quizzing Michael Clarke about whether the late Phillip Hughes would have wanted the lads to get thirsty.

It’s safe to say that the reaction on Twitter from a few people weren’t happy that Warnie was thirsty for the inside mail on the partying activities of the Aussie boys.

It didn’t bug Warnie one little bit though, with him biting back this morning on Twitter, as well as posting a photo of him and Michael Clarke celebrating the victory.

The best thing about this tweet? It was at 3am!

Here are a selection of folks who weren’t happy with Warnie wanting to get in on the action, or just made a good joke about it.

Couldn't agree more Epiquin that's the whole point of the discussion or debate its celebrate being a champion not a champion consumer of alcohol, its not that hard . Anybody remember Freddy Flintoff outside No 10 Downing St in a complete drunken stupor ,the most significant thing he did in his sporting field at the time was win an Ashes series, but I'd suggest he wouldn't have remembered the momentous occasion due to hammering himself with alcohol its such a shame and a poor public reflection . And if you dont agree with that culture you're seen a wowser or do gooder, moronic behaviour and acts through sport are being called out like never before ....

Oh dear Jrod. What an immature argument. I think its embarrassing that a grown man repeatedly asks a world champion team about how much they are going to drink, instead of about the championship they just won. I also think that its a bad thing to reinforce the relationship between success and drunkenness in front of an audience of children (even though I said I have no problem with the team having some well-earned beers). Therefore, I must be "moral police" and "perfect" and living a "boring life." Fine, you can believe that if it helps you sleep better. Oh, and just on freedom of speech: Freedom of speech is an amendment to the US constitution that prevents the government from passing legislation that silences people. It is NOT a universal right that allows people to say what they want without criticism. Oh yeah, and it's not even a part of the Australian constitution.

Being sponsored by an alcohol company doesn't mean you have to get on the booze or embrace drinking. KFC also sponsor the cricket and there wasn't any talk of smashing a few buckets of chicken after the game

J'rod and Johnno, the old 'I'm to kool for school' boys. Epiquin makes some valid points and you slam him with the 'moral police' number and suggest 'parents lie to their children'. I prefer you two stop talking. I don't think any one had a problem with the lads getting on it 'til the wee hours of the morning. It would probably surprise every one if they hadn't. But for me and I think many others were annoyed at the amount of times Warne kept asking the question. We all got it the first and second time. He wasted air time, missed opportunity to let the players have their moment, thank yous and congratulations. I got the impression it was all about Warne, what he wanted to know and stuff every one else.

It's not a matter of being 'offended' by it - it was just too far and like any joke that's taken too far it was a bit embarrassing. I seem to recall that Warnie's drink of choice when celebrating a win was Midori and lemonade...so all this carry on of getting thirsty and having a few coldies is as hypocritical as Warnie posing with a surfboard in the Carribean.

Get a life. Your domination of this thread makes your view clear. Prefer you stop talking (wait that's your freedom of speech, wait Warne can't have his either) Sick on the loud moral police minority jumping on high horses in this country. Can't even go for a beer after 1am in Sydney now. People have brains and can't make their own decisions without perfect people who live boring lives forcing it upon them.

What's reflective in Australian society today is that this type of mentality " Drink dont Sleep" is now being frowned upon and seen as dumb where 10 - 20 years ago it was just accepted and not even thought of,rightly or wrongly... What some people are suggesting is which is more important getting nailed through alcohol for a week or being a Champion through competing on the field it appears some still dont know which ones the more important .

I actually commented about this on the live blog as it was happening. My lady and I were having a few sundowners and still had the telly on for the presentation, where we counted at least 7 plus references to getting on it. If memory serves I thought Brad Haddin was the first to say he'd have a drink with everybody in the crowd, I thought "oh yeah that's funny". Then it was incessant, to the extent we were getting embarresed at the thought that people in other parts of the world are seeing this throwback to 1970's Les Patterson yobboism. Seriously I don't blame Warnie in this because he shouldn't be given a microphone and let loose outside the commentary box. It seemed like they were instructed to rabbit on about drinking to excess, but nobody said anything like "Gee a cold VB would hit the spot". God knows what it eas all about, but it made us look tacky. And I'm a drinker.

Same for me Epiquin. I like a beer as much as anybody, but it was pure stupidity to be so public about it. Channel 9 should have been in Warne's earpiece saying, "enough of that Warnie". It's not being a do-gooder to criticise Warne's interview. I sat there watching it thinking about all the kids that were hearing this message, one week after I'd been to a coaching education session (held at my local sport club) which stressed the importance of not generating this kind of message or promoting this culture to our children. Warne can spread this blokey, "let's get pissed" message to his own kids if he wants, but not to everyone else's. Not to mention how embarrassing it was in terms of the yobbo, pea-brain image of Australians broadcast internationally.

Johnno, No one is saying they are menaces to society. You might think it's all 'pc talk' but say Michale Clarke visits a school and the kids ask him "What do you like best about being a Cricketer?" or "How do you like to celebrate a win?" Now imagine he says "I like to get really drunk with my mates and have a good time." Do you think that would be acceptable? When cricketers say it on TV it's the exact same audience. As I said, if Warney had've made mention of a celebratory drink, I don't think anyone would care. But the way he carried on made it sound like it was the only thing that mattered.

Bobbo7,Why can't they bang on about if they want to be drunks, who are we to tell them what to do. Or is that spin there role models to children nonsense, all that pc talk. Well if there such menaces to society, why will the alcohol companies keep on sponsoring them then. Don't think Warnies comments will cost the team, any loss of alcohol sponsorship.

Spot on Epiqum. No issues with the team dong it in the shed, but the commentry team hardly need to bang on about it during interviews.
