NRL Round 4: what tickled my fancy

By The lazy Phoenix / Roar Pro

We all love rugby league and every week there multiple things that catch my eye and get my juices flowing. Here are the 16 things that tickled my fancy in Round 4 of the NRL.

1. Danny Wicks’ huge hit on George Burgess on Friday night. This was followed by little men Crhis Sandow and Issac Luke having a scrap all match, and even after the full time whistle. God bless Chris Sandow and Issac Luke.

2. Reece Robinson’s in and away on Greg Inglis. Actually, Inglis struggled in defence on Friday as four tries were scored by wingers that went through or past him.

3. The Tigers playing their heart out, only to have it ripped out by the Bulldogs. That is an inexperienced team playing a September team.

4. Sam Kasiano’s glorious cut out pass to send Curtis Rona over in the corner.

5. Every new player that has an exotic name – Delouise Hoeter take a bow.

6. Jamal Idris being outplayed by faster men in the centres. The Titanic could turn faster than Jamal I’m afraid.

7. Another new player arrives with a bang. I was very impressed with Gold Coast’s Kane Elgey. Can I be the first to say that life’s good with Elgey?

8. Watching the Fox broadcast of the Sharks versus Titans, there was a lovely still picture of some champagne glasses after half time, for what felt like ten minutes. No explanation needed I guess.

9. Wade Graham’s intercept pass when the Sharks had the match sewn up. It is almost poetry watching the Sharks snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. They are really channelling the old Bears spirit.

10. Tyson Frizell has brought the black boots back to the NRL. I think I also noticed Roger Tuivasa-Sheck in a pair. Within the space of about three years the black boots have almost become extinct.~

11. I loved Manly’s retro jumper – I always think of Rex Mossop when I see it. I hope the Eagles had a long neck after the game, surely Daly Cherry-Evans did.

12. Manu Vatuvei had one of “those” days, where he gets his hands confused with his feet. He will probably score five tries next week.

13. Canberra went off early with the Easter celebrations. They turned up looking like soft boiled eggs, and according to the scoreboard played like it too.

14. I was concentrating on the Cricket Final but I did catch Mitchell Pearce’s marvelous cut out pass to send Shaun Kenny-Dowall over for a try.

15. James Tamou sent out great signals for potential expressions of interest – offloads to the opposition, jumper grabbing and air clutching are all must haves from an international front-rower.

16. Johnathan Thurston’s bravery – nailing the last conversion from the sideline, then potting a field goal with moments to spare. He naturally followed this up with the winning field goal. All this against the most professional closers, the Melbourne Storm.

That was my week of NRL, let me know what tickled your fancy.

So far this year the total number of block and jeep ads on channel 9 has been ridiculous. It feels like I have seen somewhere in the vicinity of 3x10^1000 total ads.

As a Manly fan I'd prefer if you didn't.

The Dragons have been a pleasant surprise in the past fortnight. In my pre-season predictions I had them 14th... http://thelazyphoenix.com/nrl-2015-first-predictions/ I might do a review of the clubs after 6 rounds.

He's a big lad - how long before he's transferred to the pack?

10. Frizell also going places - a real handful for the Eagles, hits the line hard and often pinballs down field. 11. DCE - beautifully constructed gag TLP! 15. Tamou with long hair - I only realised after 4 rounds, I thought he'd gone missing.

I know it's a 9 thing but the nrl must've agreed to it. I don't watch the cricket on 9 which would probably be why I haven't noticed it.

William, it's a Channel 9 thing not an NRL thing. They graffiti the cricket with cross promos too. It was a real pleasure to watch the World Cup entirely on Fox. Same commentators, 90% less ads.

Having Vossy on Foxtel tickles my fancy, but that is countered by Ray Hadley on the advetorial game at 9:30 on Fridays.

Never in all my years have I seen a sport filled with as many cross promotions for other tv programs as I've seen in the NRL. Doesn't matter if it's the news, cricket, the voice, the block, underbelly, lawn bowls, anything that 9 are playing later that night/week gets a mention. It's sad really.

What tickled my fancy over the weekend? Tim Gilbert's commentary. I kept thinking to myself "What am I going to do after the game?" but then, thankfully, Gilbert would remind us all yet again that the cricket was on right after full time.

I felt cruel about DCE, but I got over it.
