Australian Super Rugby player ratings - Round 8

By PeterK / Roar Guru

Here are my player ratings from Round 8 of Super Rugby. Submit your own, keeping the figures for mediocre scores aside for reasons of brevity and so that the focus is on the best and worst performers.

Scores should be between anyone over seven and anyone below four, i.e. for very good and poor performances. Half scores are allowed, i.e. 7.5, 3.5 and so on.

Please submit your own scores for a whole team. The minimum is one team, there is no obligation to score all the games. I average the scores per team by the number submitted. I will compile every ones submitted teams scores and produce Wallaby form teams later in the week. There will be one team of the round and three accumulative teams.

Reds vs Rebels
For the first 20 minutes it was the Reds of old. They played scintillating rugby. Then Horwill had a brain explosion and was red carded.

The Rebels played better for the rest of the game. The Reds’ forwards went missing except for Gill from that point on.

The Reds did scrum well with seven men, and the Rebels were better in the forwards and backs.

Rebels
L. Timani 8/10
L. Jones 7.5
S. McMahon 7.5/10
N. Stirzaker 7.5/10
J. Debreczeni 7.5/10
S. Naivalu 8.5/10

Reds
J. Slipper 7.5/10
J. Hanson 7.5/10
G. Holmes 7.5/10
L. Gill 9/10
S. Kerevi 7.5/10
L. Turner 7.5/10
J. Horwill 3/10

Brumbies vs Cheetahs
The Brumbies were rusty off their bye, yet they cut up the Cheetahs defence at will.

Unfortunately they were unable to finish off the moves due to combination of white line fever and poor handling. Numerous tries were left on the field.

The second half was nil all. The Brumbies need to instill the organisation and discipline they have in the forwards into their backs. Admittedly their backline was rejigged due to injuries but they still should have combined better. Most of the breaks were individual brilliance.

Brumbies
S. Sio 8/10
B. Enever 7.5/10
S. Fardy 7.5/10
D. Pocock 9/10
C. Lealiifano 8/10
H. Speight 8/10
R. Coleman 7.5/10

Seems to be pretty consistent Rebels recruitment policy - sign up an excessive number of outside backs for a 30 man squad, choose not to play most of them in favour of playing others out of position, then every 12 months dump them all and sign a new batch.

Just caught up on the games last night. A lot of good rugby over the weekend! Rebels: I felt like most of the players played relatively average, doing their job and not much more. No one was awful, but being man-up for 60 minutes you'd think the winning margin would have been much higher. Timani: 8.5/10 McMahon: 8.5/10 (dude was popping up everywhere) Naivalu: 8.5/10 Harris 7.5/10 Reds: I scored a lot of Reds players higher than most considering they were down a man virtually the whole game and were in it till the very end (holding off an onslaught from the Rebels). Slipper: 7/10 Hansen: 7/10 Holmes: 7/10 Horwill: 1.5/10 (he scored a try, but let his team down in a big way) Gill: 9/10 (easily the most influential player on the field) Genia: 7/10 Cooper: 7.9/10 (Before he went off, he was playing really well. Shame he got hurt) CFS: 3/10 I didn't see him involved more than his no-try Brumbies: They should have scored about a dozen more tries... Sio: 8.5/10 (boy this kid can run) Moore: 7/10 Fardy: 7/10 Pocock: 9/10 (was great to see him involved in EVERYTHING) White: 7/10 Toomua: Im torn. His performance overall was nothing to write home about, but he showed some great flashes CLL: 8.5.10 (get this dude in the 10 jersey) Speight: 8/10

Well, glad to see that Gill has at least found some form again. And Pocock was great as well - Planet Rugby named him team of the week (with Gill honourable mention). Hope Cheika was watching.

Not good enough. He only played a quarter of the game, through his own stupidity, so maximum should be 2.5. He was serviceable up to then, including a well taken try I struggle to get him over 1.5.

What happened to Veainu? He was absolutely carving up NRC before getting injured. Now he seems well back in the pecking order. Can't understand it.

Placid has played one game from the bench - but his real focus at the moment is the Australian U20 team Kingston has only just been available after at least 8 months on the injured list. Crawford does not seem to be on the radar The one I want to see is Veainu - him on one wing with Sefa on the other would give them all the pace they need

Horwill gets a 3? red card first half should be an automatic 0. You cost your team the game

agree. The biggest issue for the rebels has been lack of genuine pace and that cost them against the lions. Naivalu should have been starting from the beginning. IMO Stirzaker is the form half of the aussie teams. You need Harris for his goal kicking though. I expected Crawford to start , yet have heard nothing about him is he injured? Scrum is still a worry.

rebels halves are coming along nicely. just wish they had more options outside them. good to see naivalu get a start and shine, he has shown promise in his cameos of the bench and provides way more in attack than the same-sameness of shipperly, english & harris. not sure why the rebels bothered to recruit guys like placid, crawford, kingston if they dont even get a go on the bench.
