Popovic hits back at reports of Bulut's departure

Western Sydney coach Tony Popovic has lashed out at speculation linking controversial striker Kerem Bulut to a move abroad.

Bulut is one of a host of players, including goalkeeper Ante Covic and striker Tomi Juric, to come off contract at the conclusion of the Wanderers’ Asian Champions League campaign this year.

Bulut was initially signed only for the Wanderers’ ACL campaign but became a member of their A-League side as an injury replacement for injured forward Brendon Santalab.

Reports have emerged several European clubs are circling with a Turkish top-tier side believed to have already tabled him an offer.

But Popovic would not be drawn on the topic.

Asked if Bulut was in his plans for next season he said: “All of them are in my plans.

“I’m not going to comment on speculation when things come out in the papers that come from God knows where.

“If you hear something from our club in terms of a player fine, but at the moment it’s just speculation.

“It’s the same with all the players. I don’t see you asking about any other player.

“There’s a process we follow in terms of re-signing players and bringing players in and that doesn’t change.

“Would I like to have him? Well we’ll see.”

Bulut has become a fan favourite since scoring a brace in his debut in the heated Sydney derby two months ago with the Red and Black Bloc holding out a sign which read “Bulut Stays” ahead of their 2-1 win over Adelaide on Saturday.

He has since become their leading goal-scorer with five strikes this season.

Popa should be ashamed of his management of the ACL game tonight -he replaced the wrong people with the wrong people and persisted with players who repeatedly fail the team

Oh good for him. He has a big challenge ahead and I'm sure he'll do well. Tomorrow is going to be good fun in the rain. Predicted heavy rain throughout Tuesday evening.

Is this what you honestly believe or are you letting your club allegiance cloud your judgement?

Not really anywhere better to post this that I can see, Shaun Mielekamp, Wanderers commercial manager, has left to become the new Mariners CEO. Good luck to him, I'm sure he'll do a great job.

At some point a tattoo removal specialist is going to see an older Kerem come through the door and think "payday".

So Kerem will stay unless he goes. I think that's rather obvious isn't it :P

Look, there is always more room for star or tear-drop tattoos on the other side next to the other eye, so Kerem Will stay-unless he goes. Cheers.

Kerem's been the most impressive player all year and he's only been there for half of it ...

Well your right it is speculation. There have been numerous stories written about it. Its not me who is doing the speculating. But if you told me honestly is he good enough to play in Europe. I would say he is and he could easily earn more than he is currently. There are a number of leagues where he could do well.

Well I hope the lad gets another chance but unless you're privy to confidential information, then talk about OS contracts on the table is sheer speculation. Is he good enough? Well he cuts a dashing figure in the HAL and has scored goals. But to take it to the next level?

Yeah I hope Popovic had a talk to him about putting off Juric like that. Tomi needs to get his shooting confidence back. He seems afraid to pull the trigger. La Rocca is on his way out which is OK. We seem to have 30 centre mids and none of them seem to provide much creative or ball retention ability.

There are plenty of reasons why players dont make it in Turkey or other countries. Sometimes its about getting the right opportunity, the right club, the right manager. Marc Janko you could say didnt set the Turkish league alight either and he is a fine player. Scoring goals for both Sydney and Austria. I think WSW would love to keep him and I am sure they have offered him a deal but from a financial sense it doesnt make sense. If a player is performing then that should be reflected in his contract. I think in our case we cant offer what he deserves because of the salary cap. My feeling based on what I have seen is that he is good enough for Europe. His performances have been terrific. Thats why his manager would have been getting offers from overseas clubs. His manager is doing what a good manager should and that is generating interest for his services. My feeling is that the offer to go back overseas will be too good to resist which is a shame for WSW fans.

"Reports have emerged several European clubs are circling with a Turkish top-tier side believed to have already tabled him an offer." But he's already tried the top tier of Turkish football and didn't get far!!!!!! Media talk is being generated by Bulut's manager who's trying to get a deal settled with WSW. Kerem is a good standard A-league player, and maybe in some Asian leagues but not in the top tiers of Europe or even in Japan.

He's looked good enough to keep from Brisbane, so if his off field extravagances are over he's certainly worth the effort as you don't find many natural strikers just lying about so worth hanging on to if you can. What's happening with Juric by the way, staying or going?

I would like to keep him at W$W, I think he has been terrific for us. He has a high work rate, he has a decent shot on him, he can play with his back to goal as well. A totally different striker to Juric and I think he has shown to be more effective. Its not a question of throwing money at him. Its about offering him a fair contract which I don't think is happening. That might be a reflection on where we are with regards to our cap space, which I am guessing wont be much room. He loves to have a go at other players which I don't mind especially if they give him poor service, but yesterday there were a few times he was having a go at Tommy for not giving him the ball but he strayed way offside when he wanted Tommy to pass him the ball. He just needs to reign that part of his game in. As for our recruitment it has been appalling. I am expecting much of the same performance next season with or without an ACL campaign. We need to do better.

What do you think though? Is he worth throwing money at? I think he's only worth keeping if we sign a very strong CAM. Someone who will put the ball at his feet. His hunger for the ball is admirable but his style is only suitable for a particular system. If we are to throw money at someone it needs to be at a CAM and some full backs. Tanaka is essentially our only recognisable full back. That is a huge failure in recruitment.

Bulut has been an average player, nothing more. To date he has been particularly fortuitous in converting some teammates' good work. The opposition keepers have made a few howlers too. He'd probably excel in the NPL. Bulut would be a good fit for Sydney Croatia or Sydney Olympic.
