Adelaide eliminate Brisbane in A-League

By Steve Larkin / Wire

Adelaide United substitute Awer Mabil has knocked defending champions Brisbane Roar out of the A-League finals in the Reds’ 2-1 victory on Friday night.

Mabil scored the match-winner in the 87th minute as the Reds set up a semi-final against Sydney FC.

After a wonder strike from Adelaide’s Craig Goodwin was cancelled out by Roar linchpin Thomas Broich, Mabil came from the bench in the elimination final to keep the Reds alive.

With Socceroos coach Ange Postecoglou among the 20,155-strong crowd at Adelaide Oval, Mabil broke the deadlock and tipped out the Roar, champions in three of the past four seasons.

Mabil, in the 87th minute, slotted a crisp first-time shot from seven metres which Brisbane `keeper Jamie Young got a glove to, but couldn’t halt crossing the goal-line.

Mabil’s lively teammate Goodwin earlier gave Adelaide a dream start with a top-shelf dead-ball strike in just the seventh minute.

After Brisbane’s James Donachie was penalised for crashing into Adelaide midfielder Jimmy Jeggo, Goodwin took aim from 25-metres and produced a memorable moment.

With a sweet left foot, Goodwin curled the free kick around the wall and into the top left corner of the net, beating a sluggish-moving Roar goalkeeper Jamie Young.

But Brisbane responded with a period of sustained poise and, after near misses from Brandon Borello and Broich, they equalised.

The leveller was gifted to Broich by a horrible howler from Adelaide defender Dylan McGowan in the 27th minute.

McGowan gained control in a one-on-one with Broich but turned towards his goal to attempt a back pass – woefully off-balance, all he could muster was a lame left foot which dribbled a metre or so and put the Roar superstar on goal.

Unmarked and closing on Reds `keeper Eugene Galekovic, Broich coolly slotted a low left footer into the net.

The 1-1 scoreline didn’t appear like changing until late in a tense second half when play opened up.

After both sides squandered chances, Mabil was given gold-plated service by fellow sub Miguel Palance, whose cut-back found his teammate unmarked near goal.

Mabil instinctively launched a right-footer which, despite Young’s gallant glove, carried over the goal line.

Adelaide United coach Josep Gombau was rapt to progress to an away semi-final against Sydney FC next Saturday night.

“We are happy … we did a good game and I am satisfied with the way that the players played,” Gombau said.

“In the first half we had chances to increase the score … the second half was very equal, it was very open, and in the end we scored and went ahead.”

Brisbane Roar coach Frans Thijssen lamented missed opportunities.

“We had our chances to win, we had good spells,” he said.

“It’s just disappointing to go out in the first round, and the way to lose the game – just before fulltime.”

And you appear to be 12 years old, with a matching IQ score. I see you posted at 12:47 am. Very late when you have to be up for school in the morning.

A world ranking of 619??? It makes you wonder (a) how they calculate it and (b) why they bother!!!

Yes our media reports don't say much about his previous experience but I found the following: "From Barcelona, Tribulietx joined Auckland City FC as assistant coach at the commencement of the 2008/09 campaign. Previously he has held similar positions at Spanish Segunda Division B sides UE Sant Andreu, UE Figueres and UE Castelldefels. " - http://www.a-league.com.au/article/spanish-coach-plays-straight-bat-on-roar-link/1lnw5sqeq39ks1ubz4qcgiss11 . And according to http://www.transfermarkt.com/ramon-tribulietx/profil/trainer/17036 - his preferred formation is 4-3-3 - which is a fit for Roar. Also his world ranking as coach is 619 - http://www.coachworldranking.com/coaches/ramon-tribulietx.aspx. The only A-League coach that I can find on this list is Popovich at 226.

jb: he does indeed appear to be a mystery man leaving all Roar fans to wonder what we will get. I think Roar management have delivered on most of what they promised when they sacked Mulvey although the “european manager” part is a bit tenuous. I suspect Roar have confidence in their current/new coaching structure under Ken Stead and a range of assistant coaches including Rado as No. 2 that the lower risk is probably someone of lower profile like Tribulietx than perhaps someone with a higher profile and perhaps bigger ego that may seek to reinvent wheels the club don't want reinventing which may well have been part of Mulvey’s problem. Time will tell but it looks like he will be on board fairly early and have enough time to shape next season. Let’s see what the next few days brings.

Volley -According to the press today your wish may already have been granted for it appears the "overseas coach" promised is actually from New Zealand, so I suppose the description fits ok.but the one doubt is that apart from a recent good display in the World competition with his part-time team from Auckland there appears to be little else to tell us where he has been and what he has done in recent years. He is Spanish by birth which in itself is a plus, but that's about "it" as far as his background goes. We can but hope.jb

Was stuck at airport due to a storm so could not watch the game. So I can't really comment on the game. My 2 favourite teams has always been Roar and Reds (Roar first of course). So I will be backing Reds to go all the way now. Reds need to tighten up in some areas and remain composed if they are to succeed. Often they loose their heads due to 'clever' gamesmanship from the opposition. As for the Roar we have made the same mistake TWICE - each time after winning the championship - i.e. failed to replace key players properly, failed to refresh the squad in general as we now have too may key players who are getting on with age and suffer injuries too often, relied too much on youth players (although there is a place to expose youth player in the senior matches), relied on coaches who had their OWN ideas about the style which collided with what the club imposes. Roar needs to stop making the SAME mistakes over and over again. We need to start with the right coach. So please Roar find a good one that fits the club and hopefully then he can refresh the squad properly.

AU need Djite to lead the line on Saturday night, Sanchez is just not up to it. Djite back and Carrusca a full game and AU will give Sydney a good shake.

It does make his decision to not honour his contract with Adelaide United appear an ill-advised one.

I don't see it that way at all. The AFL stood their ground having already booked Docklands. That's all they did. They didn't stick one up the FFA. They did what they are supposed to do, which is look after their sport first. (Personally, I think they could have switched venues around without losing anything, but thats not what they chose to do.) There were circumstances out of the FFA's control as to why the date as moved, but that doesn't change that the AFL had the perfect right to do what they did. The FFA did not "stick one" back to the AFL with the use of Adelaide Oval either. The AFL didn't really care what happened at Adelaide Oval at a time they aren't using it. They may have had a slight preference for it not to be used, and the SANFL almost certainly did given the contract in place for their move from Football Park; but it is no big deal to either organisation. The constant bitching (on here and in mainstream media) between the two sports is pathetic really. And I suspect it annoys a lot of multi-sport followers. I know a lot of it, from both sides, does my head in.

@mid "solve this puzzle and it’s game over" Game clocked! @punter Agreed u nailed it. If Japan can do it in 20 years..then why can't we.. To quote a Simon Hill article from 2013: "From a 10-team base in 1993 (like the current A-League), the J-League has expanded to 40 clubs across two divisions. Next year, (2014) that will become three, with the addition of J3. Also like the A-League, it had to compete with a long-established competitor, in this case baseball." @steve It's a 20 year plan.. Not a "next few years plan". Anyway I always say: "When in Asia..."

Real - Ever wonder why the "connection " is not apparently there at the moment. If we assume every kid playing football wants to play at the highest level possible,Roar have a "free rein" in that area for they are the only full time professional team in Queensland. That being a fact there is already a "bridge" in existence ,what has to be done ?,it has to be seen to be accessible to everyone prepared to work hard and get to the other side. This is where Roar could make huge strides forward in selling themselves to the Brisbane and surrounds football public.Roar appear to have coaches everywhere and one has to assume they are employed full time so is it possible they could be running invitation camps all around the state in the close season, not only for young players but for willing novice coaches. That would be a good starting point if they did,and more importantly, told the world they were doing just that. jb.

Let me review guys, not in any particular order; 1. Connection with player base/grassroots. 2. 2nd tier pro/rel 3. No cap or drastically modify it 4. Cost of playing game needs to be reduced 5. Availability of grounds (own grounds) 6. Academies for all A-League clubs 7. Int'l Marquees, even Aussie marquees. 8. New TV deal with FTA TV on the major players 9. Get struggling clubs right 10 Expansion.

It won't be about getting rid of the salary cap or about introducing a pro/rele system in the next few years. It needs to be about reducing the cost of playing the game - we are losing youngsters to other sports because we are too expensive in comparison. The next issue is availability of grounds. Get these things correct and the game will grow.

The only way to make that connection, Mid, is to scrap or drastically modify the salary cap thereby losing the (incorrect) 4th rate tag that cripples the A League in the search for wider acceptance.
