Toovey asks Kiwis for a 'please explain' on Foran's injury

By News / Wire

Manly coach Geoff Toovey says he is waiting on a please-explain from the New Zealand Rugby League on how Kieran Foran’s hamstring injury was handled in Sunday’s Test against Australia.

The Kiwis five-eighth was this week ruled out of NRL action for Manly for up to a month after aggravating a hamstring problem in the first half of the Test.

Toovey said the club was aware that Foran had carried the issue into the Test but expressed disappointment in the Kiwis allowing him to finish the match.

“He nursed himself through it to play in the Test, which is obviously a big honour for him. But in the first half he hurt it there. Bit disappointed on how things eventuated in the second half,” Toovey said on Friday.

“Hopefully there isn’t any more damage done. But that’s football.

“Obviously they won the game which made it worthwhile.”

Toovey said he would wait on a full report before deciding on a course of action.

“We told them that he had a hamstring issue,” he said.

“He was fine to play.

“It was more the procedures after that. We’ll just have to wait and see.”

Toovey said he was still unsure on who would replace Foran in Sunday’s clash against Newcastle.

However he confirmed skipper Jamie Lyon would be a certain starter and that Feleti Mateo and Josh Starling could be late inclusions.

Toovey also revealed the club remained interested in signing sacked Cronulla playmaker Todd Carney, as well as poaching promising halfback Ashley Taylor from Brisbane due to Daly Cherry-Evans pending departure to Gold Coast.

“(Carney has) got a contract in France, but we’re looking at all quality players that are on or off contract in the NRL and overseas,” he said.

“Both our quality halves are leaving and we need to replace them.

“(Taylor’s) name has been brought up a couple of times but I believe he’s on contract at Brisbane.

“He’s a quality player, a young player. But we need some experience in that area as well.”

I'm sure Foran will be back to running round like a spring chicken before you know it. The excellant medical staff at Manly, have done wonders over the years on New Zealanders who have been unable to play tests for New Zealand due to injury, but have been fine a week later....Steve Matai.

Dear Mr Toovey, in response to your request for clarification regarding the injury to Keiran Foran during last weekends ANZAC test match.: As you are aware, Keiran was passed fit to play in the test by your own club doctor following the game he played for Manly the week prior to the test match, in addition Keiran completed the required training sessions in the leadup to the test without incident. Keiran was also given ample opportunity to withdraw from the game if he felt he could not play. As you know, during the game Keiran has aggravated the existing injury but chose to remain on the field to complete the game. (As you yourself did on many occasions during your playing career.) Following the game, Keiran was attended to by our team doctor and his care has now been transferred back to your team doctor. Should you need any further clarification on the treatment administered to Keiran, please consult Keiran or your team doctor who will have all the notes on the treatments provided whilst with the Kiwi team . P.S. Suck it up princess ! P.S.S Haha the kiwis won Signed S Kearney

The hypocrisy is hilarious. Would Toovey have taken Foran off during a must-win Manly game if he had a test match the next week? Nope. How many Kiwis have missed end of season tournaments because their clubs have booked them for surgery etc for they miss less of the next club season?

Internationals are the peak. It club games that are peripheral.

So all rep games including SOO should be end of season games. if that happened they would be playing internationals in summer here.

This is why international football needs to be in the off season as a side event. We can't have super stars missing club games due to injuries sustained in what is essentially an exhibit game

Which is what Toovey has said. That's football. They just normally sacrifice player welfare for important games ;)

It's reasonable but also unreasonable. Coaches leave players out on the field carrying injuries of various degrees all the time. Fortune is a byatch, as they so eloquently say.

The Kiwi coach was there to get his side over the line, which he did. his job isn't to protect players for their club games. If players get injured, that's part of the game.

Sounds like an argument you have when you take a rental car back. "That scratch was there when I picked it up". Sorry. That wasn't called for. This is serious.

I think every coach has been guilty of sending a player back out after a concussion. If you are going to throw stones here you may as well include every NRL coach. I think it's reasonable that the club paying a player's salary ask why a key player was left on the field for 60mins after re-aggravating a hamstring injury. It isn't an injury you can simply shake off. Particularly when it is an ongoing problem. It is also an injury that can be severely worsened if not treated immediately.

So Toovey is concerned about the "procedures" after Foran aggravated his hamstring injury. I don't recall Toovey being concerned in last years semi, when young Jayden Hodges knocked himself out trying to tackle Greg Inglis. Toovey sent Hodges back on even though it looked like the player had no idea where he was. Was that the correct "procedure" Geoff ? Was there an investigation ?
