Super Rugby Australian player ratings: Round 13

By PeterK / Roar Guru

Here are my player ratings from Round 12 of Super Rugby. Submit your own, keeping the figures for mediocre scores aside for reasons of brevity and so that the focus is on the best and worst performers.

Scores should be between anyone over 7 and anyone below 4, i.e. for very good and poor performances. Half scores are allowed i.e. 7.5, 3.5 and so on.

SUPER RUGBY TABLE

Please submit your own scores for a whole team. The minimum is one team, there is no obligation to score all the games. I average the scores per team by the number submitted. I will compile every ones submitted teams scores and produce Wallaby form teams later in the week. There will be 1 team of the round and 3 accumulative teams.

Crusaders-Reds
The Reds were totally overwhelmed and beaten by a record score. Their defence was woeful missing 29 per cent of tackles. Their attack was reasonable.

G. Holmes 7.5/10
J. Hanson 7.5/10
L. Gill 7.5/10
J. Horwill 3/10
A. Faingaa 3/10
L. Turner 3/10

Rebels–Blues
The Rebels play very well as a team, and they make the best of what they have. Their forwards dominated the collisions and the breakdown. They also employed a smart kicking game. They played with a hard edge and overcame the Blues who were physically dominated.

T. Smith 8/10
L. Timani 8.5/10
L. Jones 8/10
J. Reid 9/10
C. Faingaa 8/10
S. Higginbotham 8/10
J. Debrezceni 7.5/10
D. Shipperley 8/10
M. Harris 7.5/10

Force-Waratahs
The Rebels play very well as a team, and played the referee very well. They slowed the ruck down and spoiled good ball. Waratahs were unable to vary their game to cope with rushing defence and slow ruck ball. They relied on individual brilliance to score tries and it was not good enough.

Force
A. Coleman 7.5/10
B. McCalman 7.5/10
R. Louwrens 7.5/10

Waratahs
N. Phipps 3/10
T. Naiyaravoro 8/10
I. Folau 8/10

Stormers-Brumbies
This was an enthralling game for its brutal intensity, niggle and variety of game plans. A weak scrum, poor discipline, poor refereeing and missing a vital kick in front cost the Brumbies the game. The Brumbies were superior in the backline and they were better at the breakdown.

J. Smith 3/10
B. Alexander 3/10
S. Carter 3.5/10
S. Fardy 8/10
D. Pocock 8/10
I. Vaer 7.5/10
C. Lealiifano 3.5/10
J. Tomane 7.5/10

Reds scrum and attack was alright. The problem was D. I think Ant F should get a 3. Samu K good attack canceled by his poor D Tahs scrum poor., along with general play.

Reds get 4 scoring high, Waratahs 3. Reds get 4 scoring low (2 very low), Waratahs get 5 in the starting team (none of those very low). Those numbers are pretty similar. You will also notice that I didn't rate many Force players highly, despite the win (for comparison, look how many Rebels I rated in their win). This is because I thought Force/Waratahs was a low quality game, and Waratahs losing in a low quality game reflects the poor scores. If I were to rate the Crusaders, I would have rated a lot of guys very highly, a much higher quality opposition, which is why the Reds scores aren't worse than Waratahs. To put it another way - if the Reds played against the Waratahs, with the same form they played on the weekend - I think it would have been close. Slipper was excellent for the first half when the score was tight. He wasn't there for the slaughter in the second half, so doesn't lose anything by that, except game time. Kerevi was responsible for a number of poor defensive misses, but countered it with solid runs and a solo try (which is something the likes of Beale, Phipps, Robinson etc... didn't do), so he doesn't score as lowly as them. Adam Thompson had a pretty poor game for once but is NZ so doesn't come into it. The other thing you don't keep track of Peter, is the middlemen. The likes of Dennis, Hooper, Skelton, etc... were generally, slightly better performers than the likes of Schatz, Gill etc.... but you don't take ratings for them.

Rob like Ethan it seems strange how reds get beaten by a record score and tahs just beaten but reds get twice as many high scorers and almost half as many low

Hodgson gave away 4 penalties, he was yellow carded so no he did not rate more than a 7. McCalman did more. Folau and TN were the only threats from the tahs. Folau 18 runs for 117 metres. 3 clean breaks , 5 defenders beaten, 4 offloads.

ethan - just interesting that reds get beaten by a record score and waratahs just get beaten yet reds get more people scoring high and less getting scored low.

Smith scrummed very well against Woodcock. He also scored a great try.

Toby Smith 3.5 last week and 8 this week but there was no noticeable difference in his work rate, effort, skills. Last week Peter you said his scrumming let him down. Why the big score improvement this week? In my opinion Toby Smith could very well earn himself a bench LHP position for the Wallabies this year.

Well, for something that maybe isn't as bad as other parts of their game, they have bettered more fancied packs this year...

Holmes and Gill have been big "winners" for the Reds this year. I think Holmes has out played his fancied captain, and Gill is potentially the second best flanker in Aus now, behind Pocock... but I don't realistically expect the poor bloke to be selected in the WC squad... Have heard a few things regarding his future...
