Stuart walks out on media after loss

By Roje Adaimy / Roar Guru

Canberra are likely to cop a hefty fine from the NRL after coach Ricky Stuart walked out on a media conference and gagged his players after Saturday’s 24-12 loss to Brisbane.

As required, Stuart fronted reporters at GIO Stadium but interjected as the first question was being asked.

His reply was a 68-word statement that lasted just 24 seconds.

“Todd Greenberg (NRL’s head of football), he was at the game tonight, and I just really hope he saw what I saw,” said Stuart, apparently fuming at some of the refereeing decisions.

“It’s a lot healthier for our club if I don’t go any further into this press conference.

“In respect to all the media, it’s got nothing to do with you, but it’s just a lot healthier if I don’t continue.”

He then said “thanks” before walking out of the room with captain Jarrod Croker.

Media were also not allowed to speak to any of the Raiders post-match, at Stuart’s request.

The former champion halfback’s actions are likely to attract a fine from league management – but it wouldn’t be the first time.

Almost exactly 12 months ago, Stuart was ordered by Greenberg to pay $10,000 for his comments about the referees in the Raiders’s round 10 loss to Penrith.

Saturday’s defeat was Canberra’s third in a row and their fifth from six matches at home this season.

I think we only have to look at history and there are serial whingers about referees, they seem to have a persecution complex and this rubs off on their players. They then get frustrated and give away more penalties and it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. Ricky is right up there at the top of the table, along with Geoff Toovey and Des Hasler. It always seems to be the refs fault with Ricky, whether it's the Raiders, Sharks or NSW. The man just can't accept that his players lack discipline and because he blows up, they probably don't see the need to improve that area of their game because they think it won't matter, they'll get pinged anyway. Not sure if there were any blatantly bad calls in that Broncos game, most of the 50-50 calls in the modern game seem to come from the secondary referee. Coaches should work with the leadership group and plan to take the ref out of the game by ensuring all players are well disciplined. Penalties usually happen when players are fatigued, lazy, inexperienced or just naturally ill-disciplined.

Actually I think that's why Ricky Stuart walked out of the press conference. He knew he was going to spit the dummy over the refs so he thought it best to shut his mouth and get out of there. Some of the penalties awarded to the Broncos in the first half were incredibly soft. But the Raiders need to learn to take it on the chin and not let it get to them. I thought the Raiders made some good metres with all the forwards contributing. Austin's running game is terrific but he needs to learn to use players around him more to get opposition defences guessing as to what he will do. His kicking game needs work as well. Williams had a pretty average game but has done remarkably well to come back from a punctured lung within 2 weeks. The Raiders edge defence is just awful - at least 3 of the Broncos tries were on the edges. Fix it up Ricky - FAST! Or you can kiss finals goodbye this year. If you are going to use a compressed defence the defenders need to snuff out attacks quickly otherwise they are left stranded out of position. I wasn't that impressed by the Broncos but they did enough to win.

Ricky would of been dirty about two things..the poor 10 and the selective penalties. The fact is, some sides are given the "leg up" in both of these departments, some, for years.

Jeez you talk crap. There were no big rubbish decisions made by the refs, as there have been in the Raiders last two games, but the game of chess that the teams play this year is inordinately effected by penalties. In the first half, the Raiders would put through a kick, and the Broncos would do their boring thing for 3 or 4 tackles trying to get off their line, then get a penalty. Fair enough if there was something being done illegally, but they were getting the softest penalties just at the right time. The Raiders weren't penalised on the first tackle, it was always late in the count. I lost count of the number of forward passes that the Broncos did, but only the Raiders got penalised for one (and it was forward). Many of the penalties were given for things that happened 40 times in the game, perpetrated by both teams. Face it, they could blow a penalty in most rucks, but why does it favour one team? There is no doubt a problem with resilience in the minutes after a bad call. The Raiders need to concentrate twice as hard after they make a mistake, or the referee does. The Dragons are the moneyball team of 2015, other than Dugan and Widdop they have no superstars but they play for each other - they got dudded in the decision to award the Cronulla try but forgot all about it and carried on. Yes, the Raiders need to do that. They also need to work on their edge defence, it was hopeless at the start of the year then they resolved that issue and came good. They are back to letting in tries that require very little effort from their opponents, they just need to pass the ball four times, then convert from out wide. Then they start playing chess again. SO.. I agree the Raiders need to look inwards and see the problem, but it would be nice to have evenly spread bad calls, or maybe just some good calls to both sides for 80 minutes.

At the moment the Raiders are attacking like a top 8 side but defending like a bottom 8 side. I actually enjoy watching them now, but Ricky needs to stop whining and coach some defence into them.

As he has done now for several years at various clubs, Ricky acted like a petulant, spolied, self-righteous child who spits the dummy when he thinks that things haven't gone his way. Canberra's team was penalised for poor discipine, basically. What example is their coach showing them about achieving better discipline, when he carries on like this? Is this how the Canberra club wants their coach to behave? If things don't go your way, it's always the fault of the referees, right, Ricky? The words 'laughing' and 'stock' come to mind.

This is all the fault of the NRL. If they got rid of the stupid 'no talking about refs' rule in press conferences we could have got Ricky to go mental on camera. Instead he just walked out. Typical NRL, ruining the spectacle of the game.

Come on Zedman. Apart from a couple iffy ref decisions not a single thing was in brisbanes favour last night. 5 day turn around after having 6 players in SOO on Wednesday, leaving only the Friday as a possible full team training run, of which only 4 backed up, away from home on a Saturday (practically) night in Canberra who had no origin representation, a longer turnaround while not having to travel at all. If Bennett were Bellamy or Robertson we'd never hear the end of it.

Ricky attitude is a reflection of his poor coaching skills. He has been a failure as a coach, and his only success are due to coaching elites teams, Roosters 2002, NSW 2005 and Australia.

The early penalties both ways were incredibly soft. The couple the raiders have away at the end though we're just stupid. Especially the strip on Hunt.

I have to agree with you Koomz about the penalties. Nearly evcery the Broncos lost the ball in a tackle they recd a penalty for a strip, but when Raiders lost the ball in a tackle they said lost ball, like when Reid smacked the ball out of a raiders hands near the try line Ref said knockon.

Before this season started, i predicted the raiders to get the spoon, I like the raiders it would give me no joy to see this happen, I have been pleasantly surprised to see them scoring points this year but Ricky Stuart is the ace up my sleeve, he was the biggest reason for the prediction and the reason for it still possibly being correct.

Ricky was a failure at the Sharks,Eels and now the Raiders.Blaming the refs for player incompetence went out with flared pants. It's never his fault, his coaching style, the players always the man in the middle. His 28 seconds press effort ,probably saved the public from 5 minutes of mind numbing boredom. He needs to go to retirement village for outmoded coaches.

Brisbane were the better team. But some of the penalties to Brisbane were as soft as they come.

I bet you Ricky wont say this - after the NRL set up a Raiders victory by having the Broncs play Monday night, with Origin in Sydney and then away in Canberra on Saturday at night in cold Canberra and the raiders still didnt win no wonder Ricky is upset. Note the other big SOO rep teams Roosters and Storm get tp play Monday night... No wonder the telgraph (Bronco owners) have a swipe at NRL

I'm always so very very surprised when Ricky or Geoff Toovey or Des Hassler have a go at the Refs. It's just so out of character for one of those guys!!!!!!! To be fair though, Ricky technically did not whinge this time.

One word Ricky - resilience. You don't show any, your team can't be expected to show any. Stop with the sooking and set an example - get your attitude right and your teams will follow. You can't expect your team to be winners when you are conditioning them to be victims. Toughen up, No excuses just honest self evaluation should be the focus of your team. Have a look at your boys, a talented lot that won't go ahead until their coach get his own house in order. You can't blame the officials fact is if your team is good enough their conduct will take the officials out of the game. That's the attitude they have to take. Not the but if this decision had of gone our way blah blah blah. Make your own luck !
