Harry Kane: New superstar or one-season wonder?

By Petar Alavanja / Roar Pro

Harry Kane has been the breakout player of the 2014-2015 English Premier League season. Beginning the campaign as a bench player he is now being courted by some of Europe’s top clubs and sections of the British media see him as Wayne Rooney’s successor as the star of English football.

Kane is second behind Manchester City’s Argentine star, Sergio Aguero, in the top scorer race, but has only netted once in the last six outings for Tottenham. Whether this is down to opposition teams figuring out his style of play or just simply a dip in form, Kane’s suitors may be wise to not go spending the bank on the England international just yet.

While the Red Devil’s reported offer of upwards of around £45 million may be a good bit of business for Tottenham and also for Kane himself, it could be beneficial to his development to remain at the Spurs for another season.

It will be hard to improve on this season’s tally of 30 goals in 47 total appearances for Tottenham, but he will only be 22 years of age when the 2015-2016 season rolls around and being the focal point of Tottenham’s attack will enable him to mature at a steady rate.

Manchester United is currently in a state of transition and with a very clustered attack it may be difficult for Kane to shine, especially with the pressure that will be on United manager Louis van Gaal to improve upon United’s finish of fourth place from this season and his penchant for rotating the squad.

Another season at Tottenham can provide Harry Kane with the playing time necessary to improve his game while also providing the rest of the football world with a larger sample size to more accurately gauge Kane’s potential.

After all, it was only two seasons ago that fans and pundits alike were singing the praises of Swansea’s Spanish forward, Michu. In the 2012-2013 season he bagged 22 goals in 35 appearances for the Welsh side, but is now floundering in the Serie A with Napoli on a loan deal.

Harry Kane can either become a prolific centre forward in the EPL, something that the league has lacked outside of Aguero and Chelsea’s Diego Costa, or he could become another name in a long line of ‘saviours’ of English football who have failed to live up to their potential. Only time will tell.

Are you an Arsenal fan by any chance? Pretty poor article, little substance, would hope for better in the future

your central theme to the article seems to be stating that it would be best for him not to go to Utd this year but maybe next year. I really hope you don't get paid for this.... he has stated, in terms that are as certain as you get in football, that he intends to be at Spurs for many years. The chairman and Manager stated the same in a Q & A.... As for the rest of the insight, "he will either become great, or he might not" - i don't get what you thought the point of this was when you set out to write it, you obviously didn't care enough to research anything first.

This article doesnt really state anything new. Obviously he can either kick on and show he isnt a one season wonder, or he can lose his form and everyone will say he was.

The article states the bleeding obvious - Harry can improve, remain static or lose his form. Simple as that. Perhaps we need a little more from our experts in assessing the situation - like coming up with some sort of definitive forecast - not just a soup of possibilities? For gawd sake, take a punt and make a fair dinkum prediction!
