Shaun Kenny-Dowall charged with domestic violence

By The Roar / Editor

Shaun Kenny-Dowall of the Sydney Roosters has been charged with repeatedly assaulting former partner Jessica Peris.

Peris submitted an Apprehended Violence Order earlier this week after the couple split up three weeks ago following an eighteen month relationship.

Police then charged Kenny-Dowall today with a number of domestic violence charges, including six counts of common assault, one count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and stalking/intimidating.

He was charged with a total of 10 offences at Maroubra Police Station earlier this morning. He has been granted bail and is scheduled to appear in court on July 23.

The Roosters released a statement yesterday in relation to Peris’ AVO application stating: “The Sydney Roosters are aware of the allegations concerning Shaun Kenny-Dowall.

“As it is a police matter, the club will be making no further comment at this time.”

Jessica Peris is the daughter of Nova Peris, a former Olympic gold medallist who is now a Labor party senator.

Brett Stewart got 4 weeks for being an absolute drunk at his club's Season Opener after being appointed the "face of the game" he deserved it and more. He was responsible for his behaviour on that night and continues to blame David Gallop for not supporting him - what rubbish. The suspension had nothing to do with what happened after being evicted from his own club. This is domestic violence for God's Sake. One of the biggest killers of women in this country. Who cares about footy. Whether guilty or innocent obviously both his partner and SKD need help.

Wayne "by being charged he is bringing the game down, even if hes(sic) found to be innocent, he still got himself into the situation." "they need to temporarily suspend blokes who take the focus off the footy in this damaging way and only let them back on the paddock if they are proven innocent" I am no fan of Shaun's and I am certainly Not defending him BUT, those statements are some of the dumbest things I have ever heard ! What you are saying in essence, is that an unscrupulous person could fabricate an incident, make a complaint to the cops and if a player gets charged as a result, possibly affect a team's performance OR the competition as whole because "they need to temporarily suspend blokes......" Things that make you go "Hmmmmmm ! "

The level of violence and verbal abuse against men is staggering, a lot of blokes are just too macho to report it...just my 2 cents!

Kirisome and lui plead guilty but told their clubs the whole time they would fight the charge thus allowing them to continue playing, in kirisome's case the gf. The cows were pi$$ed with lui when he flipped.

I understand your point, he is innocent until proven guilty however I'm not questioning his innocence. I'm simply saying he should be stood down so as to allow him to mount a credible defense and so it doesn't negatively effect the Roosters finals campaign.

It frees up cash to get Hayne, without having to pay out any contract

If he's innocent, then how did he get himself into this situation?

I am a League fan and also served 20 years as a Cop in NZ. I have lived in Australia as well and from what I learnt the societies are similar as far as domestic violence goes. It is a disgrace to both our countries. It is not as simple as whether SKD plays on or not. It is down to all our attitudes to do something about this problem. SKD, Auvaa etc are not the problem, they are symptoms. I despise those in any club that seek to hide, or lessen the existence of such incidents with 'it's a Police matter', and 'innocent until proven guilty'. All true but afterwards we feel self satisfied until the guy is found guilty and then he is hammered. This needs to be thought through further if the NRL are to stand against Domestic Violence. It is a complex problem, shown by the numbers of victims withdrawing charges, we have seen these cases too. It seems a bit ad hoc to me. There is an integrity unit. Personally I think that they have investigators (and questions should be asked if they are not) to form a decision based on 'prima facie' evidence to see whether that player is stood down. That bar has to be low, e.g if there is an AVO something is going on and the club has to be kept out of it. If a players is suspended and it affects the club, sorry but to me the perspective is they are missing a game, and at the end of the day it is just a game. Domestic violence is resulting in deaths on a regular basis and the tearing up of families and victimising of children every day, no contest.

From what i have learned,he won't be playing today.Perhaps more to do with his emotions. If we have not learnt a valuable lesson from the Stewart debacle,in which Gallop lost the plot,we never will.Innocent until proven guilty .And this we should know by week's end. My attitude towards violence against women is unshakable,it's not on and never was.Anyone found guilty, gets the book thrown at them.No ifs .not buts.No matter what their standing in the game or society.

You are right about that. Speaking generally, I wish we could get to the bottom of why it happens so regularly. And put real systems in place to stop it. It is a terrible situation for all innocent parties.

But if Souths started appearing tough on criminals they would alienate way too many of their fans.

But if he gets sacked from the Roosters, how will the Roosters be able to swoop in and buy him?

WOW ....what a simplistic view. I myself have been charged with assault a few years ago. They then proceeded to bring in witnesses to bolster their story and increase the allegations. This went on for around 9 months before being thrown out of court . TWO POINTS HERE. Firstly ....what if I had been told I was suspended from work until the conclusion ....I would have lost everything Secondly ...What do you think the punishment was for the losers that initiated the court proceeding ? That's right ...absolutely nothing....perhaps if there was consequences for the people that make these types allegations rather than walking away to do it all over again to some other innocent victim ...then we would see a reduction in false allegations.

Just gets the boot from Easts, then shows up next year at another club, everything forgotten. Shorten that forget delay to a few days, and problem solved.
