South Africa's Sports Minister issues harsh warning to Springboks

By The Roar / Editor

Following the Springboks’ stunning upset loss to Japan in their Rugby World Cup opener, South Africa’s Sports Minister, Fikile Mbalula, had a stern message to send the players.

Mbalula stated that the Springboks risked becoming a “bunch of losers” and disclosed that he had called the head coach Heyneke Meyer to ensure he was focussed on the side recovering their pride.

“What I saw was not the Springboks I know. I phoned the coach and I told him we are a nation of fighters,” Mbalula said.

“Next game I want to see the Springboks otherwise they will be nothing else but a bunch of losers, who failed to represent the country when it counts.”

The Springboks chance for redemption will come against Samoa in the early hours of Sunday morning (Australian time).

I dunno what y'all are complainin' about - his Honourable Mbalula is the pick of the crop, the top banana of the Banana Republic. With leaders such as his Honourable we can only go from strenght to strength. The only star shining brighter in the sky is that of Honourable Zuma and Honourable Malema. He he. Democracy is a wonderful thing.

I wouldnt be surprised if this prat had made the 'L' sign such is his lack of class . The Boks are probably already mentally scarred as it is without their own sports minister taking the p!ss .

When you have an utter boob like this in your Government, its hard to forsee anything positive for South Africa in the future. Its one thing to be capable of deposing those in power, it is quite another to be capable of filling the power vacuum that is left behind.

Hahahahahahaha. This is coming from a man who insists that the team be weakened further by not selecting on merit. Give me a break. Sure Australia's been pretty politically volatile recently, but South African politics is simply a basket case. The more the politicians meddle in selections, the more their sickness will infect the proud tradition of South African rugby. I must say I really feel for Biltong, harry, Armand and the like. If we think we have it bad in Aus with a lack of popular support and interstate rivalry hobbling our national team, spare a though for those poor buggers. What an absolute basket case SA politics is....

Take a look at this clown. Sums up why SA will become yet another African basket case (if not already there). Anyone with sense needs to get out. The Springboks are truly the canary in the coal mine

@ Not Bothered..."Mind you, the ABs have never selected 3rd or 4th choice players against Japan and won"... Actually, not quite correct NB as one could say the Maori All Blacks or the NZ Barbarians (most of these players would argubly walk into any other international team) would definitely count as the 3rd or 4th choice players for the All Blacks and both of those teams would smoke Japan. Recently, the Maori All Blacks on their recent tour to Japan put 60 points on the Brave Blossoms in the first of two tests and also won the second test albeit the game was closer between the sides.

In 2003, late into the night after the AB's beat the Boks in their quarter final, a small group of us ran into a senior NZ Govt Minister who was sitting in a gutter in the Flinders St Station underpass, blind drunk. Having been from our home town before entering parliament, we stopped for chat, although he was way beyond comprehending anything. So we propped him up against the wall and went on our way. Today that would be all over the internet and he'd have to make some grovelling apology about letting his family and the nation down etc… But it struck me, and still strikes me, as way more authentic behaviour than anything this muppet Mbalula is dishing up.

Perhaps you could point out who didnt deserve to be in the 23. 1 bench player? Mind you, the ABs have never selected 3rd or 4th choice players against Japan and won. That was a near FULL STRENGTH Springboks against Japan. NZ beat Japan by 48 with a team that was far from a full strength side in Tokyo. SA put out a side that included no more political selections than normal, perhaps less than normal. Sure, the ministers words were not diplomatic or well considered but they were not far from what most SA people would be thinking after such results. The Boks have lost 8 from their last 13 including losses to Wales, Arg, Jap and Ire. 4 teams that NZ has never list to or in Wales case, not for 60 years.

perhaps the minister could hop on a plane to the UK, don a Japan/Samoa/Scotland/USA jersey and volunteer himself for tackling practice to help the cause. I reckon that will do the trick.....

Somehow, I dont think a sports minister telling them to improve is the problem with SA rugby.

...perhaps if Mr Mbalula allowed the coach to pick the players he might get a different result.
