Brutal review helps Force start afresh

By Justin Chadwick / Wire

The Western Force lost their identity during their horror 2015 campaign, but centre Kyle Godwin is confident they’ve rediscovered themselves after a brutally honest review.

The Force finished dead last in 2015 in a season that produced just three wins from 16 games.

After the campaign finished, Force players and coaches got together for an open and honest review – and they soon realised that something very important was missing.

“One of the main things the boys picked out of it is we forget who we were – who we wanted to play for,” Godwin said.

“We lost that team culture of winning and losing together.

“That’s something Foles (coach Michael Foley) is really implementing this year.”

In a bid to address the issue, the Force employed leadership expert Darren Harris during the off-season.

Harris, a former assistant coach at AFL club Carlton, has helped revive the team’s culture to what it was in 2014, when the Force only narrowly missed the finals.

“A lot of stuff revolves around challenging each other on and off the field,” Godwin said.

“When the boys are doing well, there’s a big emphasis on giving them a pat on the back.

“Or when the boys are out of line, having the courage to call them out for the benefit of the team.

“He’s been really building that team culture.”

On the field, the Force have vowed to play with more width and speed in 2016.

It’s music to the ears of Godwin, who will have a big responsibility playing in either the No.12 or 13 guernsey.

“Last year our ball wasn’t quick enough, and we weren’t playing with enough width,” Godwin said.

“We were very tight. Teams were able to read us quite easily. So they are some of the things we’re implementing this year.”

Didn't the Waratahs lose to the Force twice in 2015? Anybody that can beat the 2014 Champions can't be all that bad!

If they look the goods this year I will attend at least one game! Yeah, I am pretty sure game attendance numbers were brutal too as I for one preferred to stay home then trudge down to NIB to watch their negative play.I stopped watching their games after a while on the box because I could see that the coach was obviously making them play that way.Kick Defend Kick Defend kick Defend Kick Defend....BORING! LOSING!My heart went out to Nathan Charles, Kyle Godwin and the Honey Badger who missed out on the G & G jumper cause they could'nt show their ball in hand skills and all round game. All I can say is thanks guys for staying and not defecting;). We have some good footy players here in WA it takes a good coach to release that talent and inject the kind of game we want to play in the Premier teams.Yeah, let go of Ebersohn that's the solution!?! Foley what the hell are you doing? just hope that if it goes South early the Western Force Board will be brutally honest and let go of him! ....and btw Who would'nt want to coach here in WA with miles and miles of beautiful beaches??????

Tigrannes, you would have to ask him. But when a team can't consistently over the advantage line and keep doing the same thing, year after year... he should be asking himself that. Godwin said they played too tight last year and this year they plan to play with more width. Oh and they have discovered themselves. Wouldn't that make you wonder how truly clueless the coach is, when this is the sum total of his plans to get a better result than dead last. There is nothing Foley is doing or has done to improve the Force. He is a school boy or club coach at best. If they do improve on last years result it will only be as a consequence of the new formst, new teams and the fact that some teams have lost key players to 7's, overseas etc. There is absolutely nothing for Force fans to look forward to in 2016 and for me that is ordinary. To then serve up rubbish about finding themselves is just plain disrespectful.

Chivas - whilst I love the rustic humor you bring to this discussion and, I hate to say, points I agree with, the vitriol leveled at the Force is somewhat OTT. They had a good season the in 2014 and went nowhere in 2015. The cattle they have are solid but it is Foley that IMHO deserves the blame for such a disastrous and horrendously uninspiring season. His predictability, inability to use his bench, bollocks pre and post game press conferences and ego have stymied a promising group. As seen during the world cup, impact form the bench is critical if plan A is not working. Last season, bench players averaged 7.75 minutes across the board. Please tell me how anyone, no matter how good/bad or indifferent can make an impact with so little time on the field. His inability to listen, take new ideas on board, admit that players loose form and the starting 15 needs a shake up is fundamental to players like Goodwin suffering. He also has a proclivity to treat locally developed players as mere fill ins, believing that they will stay with this team no matter what. The loss of Zack Holmes to France, Jake Ball to Wales etc comes from the fact that they asked to be paid a fair deal and dared stand up to Foley. Ego overide kick in and they were summarily booted for daring to do a workhouse Oliver impression "More.. More game time, etc ". Whilst technically Foley has some great insights into the pack, his inability to deal with people, back up behind the scenes promises to players, change a one dimensional game plan and admit when things are wrong just destroys any potential this team of solid players may have. I have little on no faith that this will change this season and whilst he may be the last one standing die to his current contract, watch out at the end of the season when more local and interstate players abandon ship. Such a shame after such a promising 2014.

Didn't Foley have a lot of success in English club rugby? How come he can't take what he learned there and make the Force a Force?

With Foley in charge the Force will never be able to lure big name players. In fact, they are unable to lure any players of note. Until the coach is replaced, they will have to rely on has-beens and leftovers. This brings us to another problem....replacing Foley will not be easy either - few coaches want the job.

cuw All politics aside but the ARU pushed hard to obtain 5 SR sides and they got it - my inference is, JON knew all too well what he was leading the ARU into and so did the franchise holders, so there's no excuse like insufficient top-class players. He may have believed the extra sides would naturally increase the player base for national selection so to that end, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.....also, all participants shared the SANZAR spoils and yet it seemed the ARU was always a dollar short at the end of each financial year when you compare with the NZRU and SARU, so I put that down to a management issue. In NZ, it is most noticeable that very few SR players are playing club/ITM/SR/test match footy unless, they are looking for a quick game after an, injury recovery. These top players will play 16-18 SR matches, 5-6RC tests and an EOYT itinerary of 4-5tests (there will be no club or ITM matches for them except the instance I mentioned). In addition, the SR cannot be compared with overseas club football unless those clubs are travelling 8-12hr flights just to play a game. The franchises and Unions are tabbing that account plus player and management salaries, Insurances, equipment costs, ground costs, PR work etc etc. The only income generated is gate takings and whatever the end of season spoils from TV deals etc that are shared amongst the participants. I have no doubts that Argentina will be a force next year and onwards so I commend them for not pursuing an extra couple of SR sides otherwise, who knows, they also, could be depleted with player depth, as you suggested earlier. However as always, success begets greed and I will suggest that within the space of 5yrs, if Argentina does become the fairy-tale story that we are suggesting, then they will be requesting a second and possibly a third SR side, for this competition - let's hope they will have the player base to support those requests or that SANZAR has learned from others mistakes, that more can actually mean, less.

Looking forward to them this time around. Shias Ebersohn was woeful. Kicked the ball away at every fricken opportunity. Just hope Peter Grant or even better Jono Lance can steer the ship from 10 with a bit more gusto. Anyway, good luck force and don't worry about the haters from East Sydney-they were on about getting rid of the Rebels same time last year (probably still will regardless of how well anyone goes but the tahs)

Chivas, I enjoy your comments, even though I have been out of the participation loop now for centuries and still wear 'my knitted cardigans!' ... my post was made a little with tongue in cheek but appreciate your passion (or am I misreading that as frustration). I as a Blues supporter continue to support them in spite of disappointing results when they show that much promise, invariably at the beginning of the season but that they cannot make the playoffs is also frustrating. I am not having 'a go' at Sir JK, he was not the only one who could not harness the ray of talent the the Blues have, there have been several coaches before him. Pat Lam is doing well up north now, why could he not do it with the Blues .. what is it, the environment? Nucifora was a round peg in a square hole and never got the best out of squad (I cringed a bit when he was chosen in the years straddling the 2007 RWC), in fact since Sir GH left and the squad was coached by a series of one year coaches (up until Peter Sloane), there has been a lack of consistency of results. The Blues or Auckland Blues with possibly the most fertile catchment areas have not won a Super title since 2003, having made the playoffs only twice since then. In a weird way, I think that would be easier to accept if they had never won a title but they have won 3! Three since the Super Rugby series started and even arguably greater success before the Super series. I do not 'lay blame' so to speak but it hurts a mite to see a squad with such enviable talent fail short 'of producing' after early promise, year after year, so without question I understand your frustrations, particularly as a rugby man looking to support a team, the Force, in your own territory. After 2014, I understand they fans were talking about finals contention and Foley losing his position with the Tahs was looking a great win for the WA based team. Now after 2015, I have to say the Force must of lost a lot of "goodwill". The Force cannot be considered now, a new franchise and the point you made about .. "The best thing that can be said about the Force, is they have great fans" .... is so true but how long will they persist in a results driven arena?

RT even if I don't see commitment, I don'expect to be told it's ok, we had s good sit down and found ourselves. And after this brutal soul searching everything will now be better. I mean FFS. Not only do they play like clueless lepers, they are now finding new ways to embarrass themselves and their fans. Is that too harsh. Maybe, but they are in sore need of a large dose of reality. The Blues at least have some interesting things happening, like the development of Akira Ioane under the watchful eye of Kaino as well as Latimer, Moala, Luatua, Tuipuloto and Tana's first season. The Blues after several turgid years under St JK, have at least had the courage to try something different and replace the coach. The Force on the other hand think the solution will be found on a journey of self discovery. But you are right RT, I am allowing this to get under my skin a little too much :-).

Joking of course but on a more serious note, the joys of success is sort of hard to get outta one's system following a side for so long, particularly when success has been enjoyed, it makes one thirst for the next ... when results do not go well you want to see the commitment by the players and coaches to turn it around.... Sorry this article was 'bout the Force not the Blues!

I'd fire there a55es for this alone. And this is the sht they offer to their fans. Work out who they are. A bunch of overpaid ret4rds wouldn't be too far off the mark if they wanted my opinion :-)
