Hurricanes burn Heat despite Lynn ton

By Ed Jackson / Wire

Hobart allrounder Dan Christian has belted his former Brisbane teammates out of the Gabba – and probably the Big Bash League – on Tuesday.

Christian smashed an unbeaten 56 off just 24 balls – including a massive 117m six which landed on the Gabba roof – to lift the Hurricanes to 4-194 in their 20 overs.

Heat skipper Chris Lynn smashed 101 off just 51 balls in reply to give the hosts hope of a first victory in this summer’s tournament.

But Lynn’s dismissal with 16 balls remaining silenced the massive crowd of 29,876 as the winless Heat collapsed to finish 9-176.

Leg-spinner Cameron Boyce, a teammate of Lynn in Queensland’s state team, was the man who picked up the vital breakthrough on his way to impressive figures of 2-22 off four overs.

The loss means the Heat must win all four of their remaining matches to even have an outside chance of reaching the semi-finals.

Earlier, Christian’s free-wheeling knock came after West Indies leg-spinner Samuel Badree fired for the first time this summer for the Heat.

Badree removed Hurricanes openers Ben Dunk (27) and Tim Paine (25) as the visitors battled to 4-129 off 15 overs.

Christian, who played a leading role in the field during the Hurricanes’ win over the Heat in Hobart last week, teed off in the 19th over.

The 32-year-old smashed three sixes of Luke Feldman’s (1-53) final over, including a giant hit to cow corner which not only cleared the fence but also the stands.

It's more a vibe objection as Dennis Denuto would say, I guess I can't argue with his numbers though. I think the last time I saw him was at the 50 over world cup, and he started so well against England, but then tailed off a bit as the tournament went on, looked like he just lost his touch. I worry about him having a form slump during the tournament I guess. That's my concern.

"Finch has a question mark for mine"...really? He's the number 1 ranked T20 batsmen in the world and averages 40 with the bat! You're a hard judge Paul!

I like that side Ronan - Finch has a question mark for mind, but he's the skipper, so I guess we've got to stick with him. Shades of Cameron White a few years ago, carrying a bloke as captain when he's not in the greatest of form. The rest of the side is quality though - Boyce into the squad at the expense of one of the quicks though? Bowled well last night.

In regards to the Heat. I wonder why Alex Doolan hasnt been given a turn yet with his experience in a young side

See, for my mind I'd rather have Lynn in there who's in good touch and good form, and trust that his eye and skill will allow him to find ways to succeed - as opposed to picking someone like say Marsh or whoever who might be a better player of spin (in theory) but who isn't in as good form. I get what you're saying about India spin spin spin - I get that. But the last few 20/20's we have picked blokes who are perhaps the right theoretical choices but weren't necessarily in the best of form leading up to the world cup. Lynn deserves his shot, he is the standout batsman of the competition so far.

I think Tim Paine is a little frustrated right now with how his cricketing career is unfolding. Not what he was hoping for back in 2010.

And who knows selector's favourite watto? Zampa/Boyce/agar all are in mix I think.

I'd still want a Leggie in instead of Lyon, nothing against him. +ZAMPA ..and I want Klinger in. Experienced/reliable, in red hot form. -FINCH I don't think both M.Marsh and Faulkner in the same team is necessary, you could argue Faulkner isn't in form. -FAULKNER +TYE I wouldn't put NCN and Behrendorff in the same team, both arguably strike bowlers, I'd rather a craftier bowler with more variations. -NCN +LAUGLIN Warner, Klinger, Smith, Lynn, Maxwell, M.Marsh, Paine, Zampa, Behrendorff, Laughlin, Tye, Trying to think outside of the box, since our goto selections haven't won us SHIT in World T20.

Seems a big risk, even more so with Coulter-Nile currently. Time will tell, I suppose..

This report suggested he will Brett, but only time will tell. NCN's experience in Indian conditions could be crucial especially with IPL veterans Starc and Johnson out of the mix http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/sport/nathan-coulter-nile-will-not-require-surgery-on-injured-shoulder-and-should-be-fit-for-world-t20/story-fni2flhh-1227689868710

Ronan, As for your team, it just seems like a funny thing to be selecting a player as your keeper who never actually plays as a keeper at the lower level. Dunk can certainly be in the running, but there are a good number of keepers that could really push that spot. One interesting thing with the keeping spot is that so many of the leading contenders open the batting for their BBL sides, few come in down the order. But the keeping spot for Australia will be someone coming in further down the order. Would that sway things at all? Or are we okay with taking someone with all their experience opening in the BBL slipping into the lower order for Australia being an easy enough transition?

My only worry about Lynn is spin bowling. He hits pace bowlers out of the ground for fun, but bring on a spinner and he struggles to do anything more than push singles. He doesn't seem to have a lot of scoring options against spin. With the WC in India he would likely have to face a lot of spin coming in the middle order there. So he needs to find a way to find the boundary against spinners too. He seems to have few weaknesses against pace, but spin is definitely a weakness for him that he needs to look at. I still think he's probably the right man to slip into that spot in the WC squad, but that one thing worries me a lot.

Yeah Lynn should be in the WC squad, at a minimum. This would be my favoured side at the moment: 1. Warner 2. Finch 3. Smith 4. Lynn 5. Maxwell 6. Dunk 7. M. Marsh 8. Faulkner 9. NCN 10. Behrendorff 11. Lyon

That was a great knock from Lynn last night - enjoyable to watch. He's really at the peak of his batting powers at the moment, seeing the ball so early, and striking it decisively. There's more than a touch of Matthew Hayden about the way he carries himself at the crease - tall, strong, and that capacity to intimidate bowlers and treat them with near contempt. Surely has to be in the 20/20 world cup starting line-up - I'd be batting him at 3, after Finch & Warner.
