Renegades slap Gayle with "giant" fine for comments to Mel McLaughlin

By The Roar / Editor

The Melbourne Renegades have issued their star opening batsman Chris Gayle with a $10,000 fine for comments he made to Network Ten Big Bash reporter Mel McLaughlin.

While Gayle claimed his comments – complimenting McLaughlin’s eyes and asking her to join him for a drink, before telling her “don’t blush baby” – were a “simple joke”, the Big Bash League sideline commentator was said to have been left “embarrassed, angry and upset” by Gayle’s inappropriate remarks.

“Chris’s comments were completely inappropriate and disrespectful. There is simply no place for these type of comments at the Melbourne Renegades,” Renegades CEO Stuart Coventry said in a statement.

“The club would like to extend a formal apology to Mel McLaughlin. Mel is an outstanding sports presenter. We think of her very highly and the club and players will ensure we work with her in a professional and respectful manner in future.

“We’ve had several discussions with Chris over the past day and he has acknowledged that his comments were out of line. We would also like to formally apologise to our members, supporters and the wider public for offence caused. The club is based on values of respect towards every member of the community.

“As a result of his comments, the Renegades have fined Chris $10,000 for inappropriate conduct. The club will subsequently donate this amount to the McGrath Foundation in recognition of Jane McGrath day today.”

Gayle is free to play the Renegades’ next match – the Melbourne Derby against crosstown rivals the Stars, on January 9.

Often off-field behaviour being dealt with via fines rather than match suspensions are criticised, and for a man said to make in excess of $7 million a year, the fine – which Cricket Australia have described as “giant” – is a drop in the ocean.

But given the former West Indies Test captain has foregone representing his national team in favour of chasing T20 dollars around the world, perhaps money will talk to Gayle about the way to talk to people.

Johnno, all the best for '16 mate to one of The Roar's best men. But I didn't know you were a legal or HR expert. On this occasion I don't agree with you. Carney was run out of his home town by a magistrate for various nefarious offences. He wasn't even allowed to go and see his mum there. He was a really bad boy. Mel's one of my favourite sports commentators, an excellent presenter who knows her stuff, a role she previously filled so well in Fox Sports football programs for years. Ten should get her back on the BBL commentary desk as the anchor, especially now that everyone knows who she is, lift your ratings even higher. As for Chris Gayle, well, not much is going to change as far as he’s concerned. This is a bloke who has a pole dancing bar in his bedroom and sends out Instagrams of two strippers in his bed, saying he might have to send one of his “nurses” home. But he’s 36 and the inevitable deterioration of the batsman’s eye — coupled with a wild lifestyle that might be the envy of many blokes — will eventually leave him with few options in the game. Yet with 15 Test centuries at an average of 42, without mentioning his remarkable short-form exploits, Gayle will be remembered as one of the finest openers of the modern era.

Can't remember where I read it but there was a comment the other day complaining that Mel McLaughlin had been shifted from the commentary box to the boundary for interviews with departing batsman. Maybe Ten will move her back upstairs after this. She's a pretty competent presenter anyway and undoubtedly attracts more females to follow the game. The introduction of the women's comp this season has been a great success and will inspire more girls to play cricket. Next summer Ten will want more of the WBBL. It has real potential. Ten hired Mel to boost their coverage with her smooth and knowledgeable presentation, a role she previously filled so well in Fox Sports' football programs for years. Get her back on the commentary desk as the anchor and, now that everyone knows who she is, lift your ratings even higher. As for Chris Gayle, well, not much is going to change as far as he's concerned. This is a bloke who has a pole dancing bar in his bedroom and sends out Instagrams of two strippers in his bed, saying he might have to send one of his "nurses" home. If the same comment was made to a male reporter would it be an issue? Honestly, if Chris Gayle made the same comments to a male reporter, I think there would be even more media attention...........

If gayle had genuinely wanted to take mel out for a drink then he should've done it off camera, or at the very least in a pre recorded interview. Asking her out on live tv is totally out of order, but everyone he's paid the fine and it's time to move on. On another note I can understand why CA wants cricket to be family friendly, but how come CA has no problem promoting alcohol sponsorship and advertising during cricket coverage, with the knowledge that hundreds of thousands of kids will be watching

Why should't he appeal the fine Brett? What coz the politically correct crowd have just said he's guilty? Funny Brett, Kurtley Beale ended up exonerated, and Ewan Mckenzie resigned. And Todd Carney won a wrongful dismissal case against Cronulla within the NRL's appeals structure. He was as of October 2015 suing the sharks for $3 million. If Gayle think's the fine is wrong, paying it is an admission of guilt. I don't see why Gayle, should just be railroaded by the PC crowd.

Mountain out of a molehill by the media, again, surprise surprise. Was it a bit inappropriate - yep. But, if those few sentences are considered harassment, then we all need to have a good hard look at how overly sensitive we've become. Give him a fine and say not the right place, but to say it is sexual harassment, puhlease.

Q. What is the difference between Gayle asking MM out and calling her baby, and MM putting her arm over Junior and tweeting "talk and chemistry" ? Waiting for the self righteous white knights at the roar to answer.

Johnno, changing the scenario to support your argument is very lazy, and irrelevant. But hey, you go to work tomorrow and say to a colleague, you barely know, in front of your superiors, what Gayle said to Mel... then post back what the outcome was.

joe b Well what would have happened if Mel liked his advancement? And said yes to the drink offer would it be seen then as what? So basically Gayle, had a shot asking her out he was rejected and now it's disrespectful and goes against values of the team? What it of gone against the values of the team if she said yes. A basketball player or american football player asked a sports journalist out via twitter, she said yes. Was that wrong to in your view going against the employer, asking someone out via social media, which is a public domain.

Yeah great personality. He's a grade A a**hole according to Chris Rogers - a proper professional cricketer. How is it a personality to disrespect in such a sexist way a reporter doing her job?

His employer fined him because he engaged in behaviour contrary to the values of the company : "The club is based on values of respect towards every member of the community." The breach being sleazing onto a woman in the workplace, on live tv, which brings the Rengades brand into disrepute. Saying it was just a joke, demonstrates a lack of understanding and remorse.

It seems, now everyone has by the end of the day, moved on from worrying about Mel's so called "hurt feelings" and now moved to the blame game. The lnych mob in full view, and someone has to go down, and it seems Gayle is the one, like Todd Carney with the bubbler incident. And the one blamed, is strapped up quick and fast and humiliated and character assassinated before, he can even prepare to defend himself and get a fair hearing. Someone has to go down here, and it appear Gayle is the one. And once the bombs are thrown, cricket Australian, the renegades, channel 10, the politically correct mafia, or duck for cover in a cover up and run away, while Gayle gets tainted. The wallabies had the same problem with Curtly Beale, being the bait and the blame, to in the end Beale fought back, got a lawyer etc, and the ARU were humiliated, and Mckenzie quit, and Beale got a new contract and dogged a bullet. Gayle should stick up for himself and appeal the fine, and even look at suing the renegades and CA for defamation. Another example of someone being hung to dry.

What about Channel 10 interviewing Boonie - after filming him drinking a bunch of beers? Slippery slope. What about Mel's twitter comments with her arm around Junior tweeting "talk about chemistry"? Slippery, slippery slope. If you are a black man you will slide right off.
