Brisbane Roar vs Adelaide United: A-League live scores, highlights

By The Roar / Editor

The Brisbane Roar want a win to keep their spot on top of the A-League table certain when they face Adelaide United on Friday night. Join The Roar for live scores from the match beginning at 7:00pm local time, 8:00pm AEDT.

Brisbane currently find themselves on top of the A-League table, but only by a single point, with the Western Sydney Wanderers and Sydney FC nipping at their heels. A slip-up tonight could very well mean the end of their time at the top.

They come up against an Adelaide United side that has found some excellent form recently which has seen the Reds rise into sixth where they currently sit four points clear of seventh-placed Wellington Phoenix, and four short of fifth-place Melbourne Victory.

Brisbane definitely enter this match knowing that they have more to lose. The Wanderers in particular have a very winnable match against the Central Coast Mariners this week – while Sydney face a sterner test, Melbourne Victory – so they will want to keep their fate in their own hands with a win.

That said, if Adelaide intend to rise into the top five at any point during this season it is matches like this one that they need to start winning. We’re in the latter half of the season now, and if the Reds don’t take that step soon they are likely to find themselves in a case of too little too late.

The Roar haven’t had a win in two weeks either – suffering a goalless draw against Wellington and then a 4-0 smashing from Melbourne Victory – so they need this win not just for the points, but for the pride as well.

However with Jamie Maclaren, Brandon Borello and James Donachie all missing from the side on Ollyroos duty, they look likely to struggle against a Reds outfit that has gone without defeat in their last seven games.

Prediction: Brisbane’s outs make a win for them look unlikely, but that doesn’t necesarilly mean a loss either. Tipping a draw, 1-1.

Ian - Nowhere did I say the choice of Theo weakened the team, on the contrary it is possibly the best position for "cover" that Roar have, but it was the fact that he ,Young ,was apparently dropped after a heavy defeat casting the doubt that the coach in some way blamed him for that defeat, when we both know that not to be the case. You mention a "slump" in form which may just be a wee bit derogatory to other teams like WSW and Adelaide who not so many weeks ago were "in the doldrums" so to speak, and now are challenging for top places JA and RA .certainly have some thinking to do, but my point is that that "thinking" should have been done weeks ago and perhaps we would not be wondering today what Roar's best line up could be. Cheers jb

Maybe, but there was a definite handball in extra time that should have been a penalty to Roar. I don't think Ricky dived, and nor did Lustica carry on about the handball. Not liking the results, but give me Roar's attitude to fair play any day, over any other side in the league.

I think Aloisi had to give Theo a run at some stage. Now was probably an opportune time. Young wasn't to blame against MV. Was Theo at fault at all last night? He certainly wasn't better - however he was first choice keeper 18 months ago. Apparently it's ok for other teams to have a lull in form - it is Brisbane's time. JA and his brother have some thinking to do to find our best 11

Bto - Surprised you missed the most obvious piece of thinking. Young was dropped so one must assume the coach blamed him for contributing to the loss of the four goals against Melbourne when most pundits have had nothing but praise for the way Young has performed in recent weeks. So what will be done now ,is Theo for the chop???????? Another point, the long serving left full back Shane Steffanuto did the right thing and announced he would be retiring at the end of this season. What has been done with an eye to replacement?. Nothing, for it appears having a young Olyroo on the books ,even though he has been tried and found wanting, is still the only "out" if Shane, due to his failing pace, is "punished" by amassing 5 yellow cards a bit quicker than usual. So what has happened to see this team sit in the top echelons of the league for the last 15 weeks??? It is relatively simple. While other teams struggled and experimented in order to find their best eleven and systems of play, now in the run in, the chickens are coming home to hatch. Now time is against Roar making the necessary moves tofind their best eleven and system. jb

Stevo -Careful use of words needed here. You called it "anti football" I called it "negative defending" (a broad reference to retreating defence) You used "ineffective football" when I think you meant "ineffective possession football" there is a subtle difference. Look and analyse the figures shown above. Team possession Roar 65% ; Adelaide 35%. Shots . Roar -14 ; Adelaide-6 Shots on goal Roar 3: Adelaide - 5 Corners Roar 6 : Adelaide 3 Goals Roar 1 ; Adelaide 4 If those figures don't paint a picture for you then nothing wiil for it is a growing trend in HAL statistics. Cheers jb

If Elrich turns up like he did last night Adelaide are a fantastic side, that last goal was sublime.

Both penalties spot on. The first one clearly clipped his heels. The second one brought down like a rugby tackle.

As usual, what a fantastic even competition the A-League is this season, when you get results like this. As Arnie said, " . . . its a tough competition, anyone can beat anyone on their day and you have to be prepared for anything.. . " Anything will happen this weekend and the top 5 will be different again by Monday night. Some great football and goals and a good game for SBS.

Only one problem JB, Brisbane may have most of the posession but do they play posession football. I leave you with that to ponder.

Aaaah the MV expert who cares about no other club apparently than MV is still making special comments for the team he looks to emulate - Brisbane Roar. You do write in a clever way but for some it is easy to see - that was just a long winded way of saying sucked in Brisbane. You are up yourself enough to declare what the outcome of a match is for fans of another team - that you profess not to care about. Not sure why though you think it was understandable to ship 4 goals away to MV last week but it's worse this week. It does indeed 'suck' though, differently to you, I still support my team when they lose. And remember MV only lose if they 'decide to play badly'. Good Luck for Melbourne Roar against Sydney FC.

This is the worst match of Brisbane Roar I have ever seen. Anyone can advise an even worse match ever in the A-league history. Actually, it is a repeated 0-4 loss in a row. That penalty is dubious. After so many matches, Aloisi still cannot cure the defence problem. What have been said last week remain the same. There is no improvement. How can this be for a professional coach? Even an ordinary fan can figure out. Theo was very smart to save an one-on-one situation at the very beginning. However, that did not maintain long. How could 4 orange shirt players not match 2 black shirt players in the defence in losing the first goal? Even any ordinary fan can tell that is ridiculous. For a more experienced fan, he can tell by the positioning of the players. As said for weeks, there is no cover to Hingert. When there are 3 orange shirt players in the box area, Bowles should be running towards the right side to cover Hingert in case the opposition could pass him. However, he just lingered. In few matches before, Bowles or North might move back to the base line in the mouth to cover. However, there was none this time. The anger is not from the loss or a second big loss. It is about the very poor performance. Right before the 3rd goal was lost, many Roar players were walking at the left flank. The body language told that they have no morale. Why? Or, they were too tired. Is the team too old? When the alleged bad performer in the last match against Victory, Hervas, was restarted, people paid more attention on him. He never performed in this match. He was just very ordinary. Also, it seemed that he was ignored. Many players did not pass the ball to him. The gestures of the defending and mid-field players tell that something behind the scene is going on. Are the players not satisfied with the coaches? This has nothing to do with the away Olyroos young players. The defence is too bad. How can this team score tonight? Long high ball to the box could do nothing. Henrique could not perform better than being a substitute. Clut is not physically good enough too. After so many poor matches, John Aloisi still cannot make up his mind. The only change is not a change because Stevenauto has got 5 yellow cards to be suspended automatically. Even if the team has been performing well, a good coach has to change to avoid predictability, not to mention poor performances in many matches. Now, any team in the league can beat Brisbane Roar. If Hingerts is used to do overlapping, he should be covered: Hingerts; Devere; North; Brown Polenz ; Mckay Borrello; Corona; Broich Maclaren Talk to the players. Rebuild the morale. Don’t just go your way. It is critical now. If you cannot do anything good to the defence, you will follow the path of Holger Osieck.

I hate to remind some of those who have been discussing systems but have a look at those possession figures and score ---- ,Result -- Possession football (65%) 1 --- Negative defending (35%) 4. Something surely is wrong. Wonder what it is??????? And to hear that esteemed pundit say in his summation that other teams could soon start to copy this style of playing was almost comical. Arnold has, and is, using that strategy and has done since his days at CCM. Glad that Fozz has finally noticed. jb

The Roar and Aloisi are overrated and this form has been coming for about 5 weeks or so.Whilst a couple of attacking players have been missing,it's been the midfield that has looked horrible.Problem for them has been Henrique up front -- Comment from The Roar's iPhone app.

At the start of the season I said I rated AUFC as one of the best teams in the comp. Many disagreed. The ALeague season lasts 27 matches. No trophies are handed out for the teams that are near the top of the table early in the season. Are Brisbane Roar pretenders? Last week conceding 4 away from home to the Champions was understandable. Today, conceding 4 at home to AUFC was humiliating.
