'The vast majority went home, Mitchell should have done the same thing': Sterlo

By Paul Johnson / Roar Guru

Sydney Roosters playmaker Mitchell Pearce has again landed himself in trouble, this time over a lewd act while on an alcohol-fuelled Australia Day bender.

An intoxicated Pearce can be seen in a video shown by the Nine Network’s A Current Affair forcing an unwanted kiss on a female, who rejects his advances and clearly states “I am a lesbian,” before he kisses her.

Pearce then turned his attention to the woman’s dog, announcing: “I’ll f*** that dog, I don’t give a f***, I don’t have a sexuality.”

More Mitchell Pearce:
» Roosters stand down disgraced captain Mitchell Pearce
» Footage emerges of Pearce simulating sex act with a dog
» Sack or suspension: Lewd act to cost Mitchell Pearce dearly
» Coverage as the story broke
» Geyer says Pearce “needs to be suspended for 12 months”

Pearce, who was shirtless but wearing shorts, is then seen to simulate sex with the dog.

The woman tells him to stop but Pearce continues to simulate sex with the animal before the woman takes the dog away and tells him to leave.

Pearce again states what he would like to do to the animal.

“I want to f*** your dog, I don’t even care anymore.”

The woman then suggests Pearce had also urinated on her couch.

This is not the first time Pearce has found himself in trouble because of issues with alcohol.

In 2014, he was fined $20,000 by the Roosters after a nightclub incident in Kings Cross where a female patron complained about his advances.

Pearce was then asked to leave the venue by bouncers before a brief police investigation ensued.

After that incident, he went on a self-imposed alcohol ban.

The latest episode casts a shadow over his footballing future, especially in the wake of Todd Carney’s banishment from the NRL for an alcohol-fuelled incident in 2014 at a Cronulla night spot.

In 2010, Canberra released representative centre Joel Monaghan after a lewd act with an animal during the Raiders’ Mad Monday celebrations.

The Roosters and National Rugby League both issued subsequent statements on Wednesday evening in relation to the Pearce incident.

The Roosters announced they would conduct an internal investigation while the NRL awaited a report from the Roosters into the incident.

“The Integrity Unit will work with the Roosters to ensure the matter is dealt with appropriately,” read the NRL statement.

Parramatta legend Peter Sterling has weighed in on the incident and says Pearce will pay for his transgressions.

“We’re talking about a guy now who’s got form and is one of the leading players in our game,” Sterling told Triple M’s Rush Hour.

“This will be deemed to have brought the game into disrepute.

“You have to ask yourself how many times is that going to be abided and, when you get to this stage, how heavy do the NRL and the Roosters come down on him?

“The guys have got every right to be out on Australia Day, on a boat enjoying themselves.

“The vast majority of the Roosters had a great time and went home; Mitchell should have done the same thing.”

The Rugby League Players’ Association (RLPA) issued a statement on Wednesday night saying it was not appropriate to comment on the circumstances of the case without knowing all the facts.

“We understand the club will conduct an internal investigation and that the NRL Integrity Unit has asked for a report into the matter.

“But the Association has been in touch with club and NRL officials to reinforce that any investigation must follow due process, which we have been assured will occur in this matter.

“The RLPA will provide Pearce with appropriate wellbeing support as needed.”

How would you like to be the Roosters minder - he gave them a cabcharge to get them home safely but unwittingly meant they had more money to spend and less reason to be responsible

A reporter serious about his job would see a press release like this and chuck it in the bin. It's as informative as a blank piece of paper.

"The Rugby League Players’ Association (RLPA) issued a statement on Wednesday night saying it was not appropriate to comment on the circumstances of the case without knowing all the facts."
It also released an advance statement to reporters, embargoed until three weeks time, which states “The Pearce matter was dealt with weeks ago. Why are you bringing up old news with all its Murdoch fuelled negative connotations, when you should be talking up all the positives we can look forward to in this new season?”
"We understand the club will conduct an internal investigation and that the NRL Integrity Unit has asked for a report into the matter."
Just words to fill up the A4 sized paper. This is as obvious and as pointless as saying “The Association staff arrived at work at 9 this morning and will go home after 5 this afternoon. Next Monday they will arrive at 9am and they will go home after 5pm. On Tuesday ...”
"But the Association has been in touch with club and NRL officials to reinforce that any investigation must follow due process, which we have been assured will occur in this matter. We reminded them to check their zipper is done up before leaving the toilet, to wash their hands before eating and to not have a heavy meal too close to bedtime."
The NRL response was “Oh bugger, we had planned to do this one without following due process, just for fun. You RLPA blokes always say the same thing every single time. So very boring.”
“The RLPA will provide Pearce with appropriate wellbeing support as needed.”
“This is consistent with RLPA policy to its members that “It’s not your fault” and with our determination to find someone else to blame.”

What a circus this has become. I am afraid that MItchell has given all sorts the opportunity to throw their 2 cents' worth. For instance: 1. the RSPCA announcing that they would investigate and then grandly announce that no charges would be laid...? 2. all sorts of women's rights issues raised and the general behaviour of the NRL towards this demographic. To be fair, this is an important issue of course, but they are really kicking a Man when he is down here...(albeit of his making) 3. I still struggle with the notion that he made a "sexual advance". Unwanted act? Yes. But anything else? The line is growing increasingly narrower here... 4. Mundine? Please/ Shut up and go away. But you know what? This only happens because of how he behaved. He allowed this to happen. When will he learn? For me, this should not be career ending, but it may well be in the current social climate.

This story has a lot of interesting threads to it. The social media trial by keyboard. Who's for hanging and who's for counselling. Anthony Mundine thinking he should comment on RL eventhough he's right about racism. And the whole thing has the look of the Outsider by Camus - is it the racism and the dog or is it the fact that he did it on Australia Day that he's being tried for? Has anyone asked Jarred Hayne what he thinks or the postman for Addison Street, KENSINGTON? The Story is; A guy gets drunk at a party and does stupid and highly questionable things and just next to it is "Dog bites Man!"
