Salary cap dramas could cost Eels four points: reports

By News / Wire

Parramatta could lose four points before the start of the NRL season after apparent irregularities were reportedly found in Anthony Watmough’s contract.

The issues relate to Watmough’s third-party deals, which include companies directly related to the club, according to Fairfax Media.

The former NSW and Australia second-rower joined the club from the Sea Eagles for the beginning of the 2014 season, at which time a number of third-party deals were included in the contract registered with the NRL.

However it is alleged the Eels failed to report that one of those companies, ScoreCube, is a wholly owned subsidiary of BlackCitrus, a company who provides a number of technological services to the club.

NRL rules prevent companies with a commercial interest in a club from providing third-party deals for that franchise’s players.

The Eels are already in hot water with the NRL after breaching numerous tiers of the salary cap on multiple occasions in the 2014 season.

The club was issued with a four-point penalty for the 2016 season when the breaches were uncovered last year, but it could be avoided if the Eels got their house in order before February 29 this year.

The penalty also came with a warning that any further breaches before that date would result in the points being deducted.

The club is also yet to enact all of the 52 governance reforms recommended by the NRL last May, while the NRL is understood to be still investigating Parramatta’s salary cap situation.

There is no suggestion that either BlackCitrus or Anthony Watmough had any knowledge of the potential breach.

3 hats Parra have been put through the ringer since this first was discovered way back when and i really don,t think they would try purposely to pull the wool over the NRL with everything thats been going on .Someone just hasn't done their job or it would have never come to this with all the BS surrounding the salary cap the NRL need to simplify the whole deal because what a mess to start the season with.

They still have time to correct it. The salary cap system is broken. What we need is some sort of performance/ability based measure based on independent player stats. As long as its linked to money, it will be open to abuse.

He didn't. There's still a number of measures that the NRL requires Parra to put in place that they've as yet, failed to do. The threat remains until those conditions are either complied with, or renegotiated. This is just another irregularity that was not reported, and hitherto, not known to the NRL. The most embarrassing part, though, is that is concerns Watmough's contract. That's salt in the wound.

Well, it looks like minus 4 points for the eels now, IF the NRL have the balls to enforce it? It was massive cheating on a large scale, breaching ALL 4 tiers of the CAP. It should be more than 4 points.

Still making assumptions there Steve. Where is your evidence that the club knew that Scorecube was a subsidiary? Where is your evidence that this wasn't disclosed as part of the ongoing review? Your making a lot of assumptions and laying blame from one small article written by a man with a very big agenda against the current board at Parramatta. Mountains out of mole hills and will all blow over.

So let me see if I understand correctly. Because the TPA was from a company wholly owned by another company involved with the club its OK?? Hmmm....I don't think so. The fact that the TPA was structured that way suggests that it was a blatant attempt to hide the fact that the TPA was not in fact legitimate in the first place. The original story clearly states that they did not disclose these details to the NRL. Spin it any way you like....they got caught pulling a fast one and should pay the price.

The salary would survive any legal challenge, otherwise player managers (in either NRL or AFL) would have made on client challenge. Leagues will win on the "viability" argument alone. If you are inclined, have a read of this http://researchonline.jcu.edu.au/4659/1/4659_Davies_2006.pdf

Because its part of the ongoing review. Proszenko has got hold of one little tidbit and blown it up to be bigger than Ben Hur. One would assume that Schubert and the NRL are still reviewing all contracts and all areas of governance. As part of that review a discrepancy was noted and it will be dealt with along with the rest of the package of review. Please note that the tpa was signed off in 2014, before the NRL instituted a governance review. So coming out and saying this is some sort of big new revelation is rubbish and an exercise in selling papers. On a different note, the tpa came from a subsidiary of a company who is associated with Parramatta not from the company that was associated with Parramatta. The NRL approved of the TPA. On a technical level, according to the NRL's rules that should be okay http://www.nrl.com/nrlhq/referencecentre/salarycap/tabid/10434/default.aspx As I said, and I am happy to be quoted if wrong, this will all blow over.

My understanding is the 4 point deduction is linked to the 119 or so recommendations made by the recent governance review of which the club have cherry picked a number they would not choose to implement for various reasons? One of them the recommendation to increase the number of years between board elections is reasonable as this will lead to increased stability etc. The Eels are against this, again for reasons unknown? With good governance, including independent directors the Eels I think will prosper.

Nice bit of redirection there Parrafan lol. A couple of weeks ago when Parra signed Jennings you were trumpeting how now that Schubert was in charge your cap issuues were in the past. Here we are only a couple of weeks later finding out they still have massive issues in complying with the rules. Maybe Ian wasn't doing his job?? A bit suspect also that this has only become public after they signed Jennings. The fact that the NRL ratified that contract is a joke considering this latest bit of news.

I bet you would like to be as sure that the Eels don't lose the four points as I am of Manly running out at Brooky this year

That's it.. Manly don't have their home ground sorted out or round 1?? Ok I'll give you that Parramatta win in the having their home ground fixed competition each year .. what sort of trophy do they get for that and do they keep it next to the real one that they won last THIRTY YEARS AGO!!

I don't know mate haven't been following it. Is there a problem at Brookie? Good to see you are confident this will blow over. Unlike the Cowboys incident you mentioned above, this is not the first time the Eels have mangled contracts. And it comes at a time when they are desperately trying to prove they are no longer incompetent. The NRL doesn't threaten loss of points to clubs they are confident with. Or first time offenders. Not good timing at all.

Lol Eagle, how is the petition to council going so that you can play at that sandpit known as brookvale. Guaranteed this will blow over in a couple of days, much like everything else.

I think they will struggle to get 13 wins (30 points). So 15 is very, very unlikely. So if they do lose the 4 points, and let's face it they really should pay for the multiple messes they have created when it comes to contracts, then they won't be playing finals footy. Again.

So ScoreCube is not owned by BlackCitrus? Well you better let the NRL know! It's a smear campaign I tells ya. Meanwhile Foran has his contract changed after signing it and feels aggrieved that the Eels haven't been honest with him. But is convinced by Watmough to go through with the deal anyway so he does so. Now Watmough is dragged into a mess that it appears only the Eels can create. This stuff tends to happen when Ryan Morgan is one your highest paid players! Incompetence of the highest order.

Yes the deals must be presented and signed off but it’s pretty obvious that the NRL requires the teams to make certain reps and warranties with regards to them. This is how regulation works, they have checks and balances but at some point they need to rely on the person submitting information to have made reasonable enquiries as to it being accurate. I’m sure they have to sign something to that effect. Otherwise there is no reason to ask for a submission right, if they are going to assume everyone is lying and they can get 100% true and perfect information then they’d know about the deal before the Eels right? Unfortunately the only way that would work is if the NRL has every current and potential future person involved with an NRL team in any commercial context under constant (and illegal) surveillance.

Not sure about that Parrafan. Seems like a pretty cut and dry case of a club trying to cirmcumvent the rules.....plus its being reported in other papers not just the SMH. Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Schubert hired to sort all this stuff out? Now we hear (after they have signed one of the top 5 centres in the game) that they still have major issues with dodgy TPA's...and yet they are still allowed to go around signing up whoever they like without consequence.
