Sunwolves vs Bulls highlights: Bulls hold off determined Sunwolves

By Nathan Farebrother / Roar Guru

Match result:

The Bulls triumped by three points in a great game that could have gone either way. No team really established themselves, with momentum shifting multiple times throughout the fixture.

REPORT: BULLS TOO STRONG FOR SUNWOLVES

The Sunwolves fought valiantly, but unfortunately, fell short once again to South African opposition. For the Bulls, it wasn’t a perfect game as they missed several opportunities to score, but in the end, they played well enough to claim the victory and the Sunwolves helped their cause by giving away penalty after penalty after penalty which resulted in two yellow cards during the match.

Final score
Sunwolves 27
Bulls 30

Match preview:

Can the Sunwolves get their elusive first win in Super Rugby or will the Bulls build upon their 16-16 result against the conference-leading Sharks? Tune into The Roar from 9:55pm (AEDT) to find out.

It may be a tough ask for the men from Pretoria, as they haven’t won a game outside of South Africa since 2013 – when they beat the Blues 28-21 at Eden Park – a long time between drinks.

To try and achieve this, coach Nollis Marais has made numerous changes to the side that drew with the Sharks last week. Flyhalf Tian Schoeman, lock Jason Jenkins, prop Lizo Gqoboka and Spirngbok Jesse Kriel all come into the starting team, replacing Francois Brummer (bench), Grant Hattingh, Trevor Nyakane (bench) and Jan Serfontein (bench) respectively.

The 25-year-old Hattingh did not travel after succumbing to injury, so Nicolaas Janes van Rensburg will take his place, whilst Bandise Maku and Pierre Schoeman have the chance to make their first appearances.

Coach Marais also alluded to the fact that the Bulls will not be taking the Sunwolves lightly at all, and the South African team will look to make put out a solid performance.

“The Sunwolves I rate highly as a team. If you look at their first they played against the Lions, they were very good. I don’t think a team in this competition – any team – must be underestimated,” Marais stated.

“They keep the ball quite well and they come with little new interventions every single time – a chip here, a grubber to put you under pressure. It is always difficult to play away from home and we have to be ready for anything”.

For the Sunwolves, it’s a case of getting that first win. Coach Mark Hammett has also made a similar amount of changes for this fixture.

Akihito Yamada, the Sunwolves’ superstar winger, replaces Mifiposeti Paea, scrumhalf Kaito Shigeno takes the place of Atsushi Hiwasa who drops out of the match day 23 and Tomas Leonardi replaces Ed Quirk at No.8.

Additionally, winger Viliami Lolohea re-enters the starting line-up, along with Liaki Moli who moves to lock.

In their last two games, the Sunwolves have led at halftime, so it remains to be seen if they can get off to a fast start and then hold on for their first win.

Prediction
The Japanese franchise should be able to build upon numerous positives from their opening games, especially with another match at home, and I’m tipping them to triumph over a good Bulls side – just.

Sunwolves by 3.

Damn, that is a close call by the score although highlights suggests a try after 80 minutes meant the Bull had it won more convincingly. Haven't seen the game on tv as just got home but a quick read of Nathan's blogs gives us a feel for the match. Good work Nathan, many thanks. So maybe the Tipping Panel can have a contest to guess how many matches the Kings, SunWolves, Reds and Force will win during the season. I'm putting it out there to be 0, 2, 3 and 2 respectively. Any takers? :)

No worries! I think for me, Smit is probably worthy of it given his try and numerous turnovers. Was also really impressed with Pisi's performance! Hahaha I can imagine how humid it would be, the Sunwolves were really good I think, penalties let them down tonight. What about your MoTM?

Thanks Nathan. Fine work. Who's your MOTM? Bulls went to type when they realised they can win by set piecing it for the 80' Didnt bother much to use their backs. Also it seems they dont like the humidity much. Wolves gotta bring in their Brave Blossoms to play for them. Then they will start winning. I wonder how much to aircon the SG stadium? ;)

Yeah good stuff from the Sunwolves in the second half. Even the scrum improved. Leonardi's yellow card was fair enough but Quirk got screwed over given the ref had let the Bulls compete at the breakdown like that all game. If that ref ever gets a Brumbies match Poey would be good for 6-7 steals.

FULLTIME Sunwolves - 27 Bulls - 30 Great game that could have gone either way. No team really established themselves, with momentum shifting multiple times throughout the fixture. The Sunwolves fought valiantly, but unfortunately, fell short once again to South African opposition. For the Bulls, it wasn't a perfect game as they missed several opportunities to score, but in the end, they played well enough to claim the victory and the Sunwolves helped their cause by giving away penalty, after penalty, after penalty which resulted in two yellow cards during the match. Definitely some positives for both teams heading into next weekend. The Sunwolves still have that first win eluding them, but the Bulls will be happy to come away with their first victory in Singapore. Thanks for tuning in guys, I'll be back at 8:30 tomorrow for the last game of the round!

What a contrast in styles. The NH team from Japan play with speed and dexterity whilst the SH team from South Africa trundles and grunts their way over the try line.

'82 - TRY! The Sunwolves finish off the game strongly with a try to Yatomi who slices through the Bulls defence and crosses next to the posts. Pisi converts. Sunwolves - 27 Bulls - 30

And for a team that has 14 men only on the field, this last 10 minutes hasn't been too bad from them at all!

'79 - Try-saving work their from Jan Serfontein. Starting in their own 22, the Sunwolves kick in behind on one side of the field, regather and spread it to the other side, finishing off with a kick in behind that is only saved by Serfontein, and kicked out of play 5m out. Nothing more comes of it, as the Sunwolves unfortunately lose the lineout.

'78 - A near try there for the Bulls off the lineout. The ball actually was passed by the replacement scrumhalf into the knee of Strauss, but it was ruled to have come off the hands of him instead. The Sunwolves have a scrum 10m out from their own line.

'76 - Excellent work by the Bulls at the breakdown. Straight onto the ball, and they gain the penalty after the ball wasn't released. Lineout to the Bulls on the Sunwolves' 22m line. Time is running out for the Sunwolves to get more points on the board.

'74 - From the lineout, great work from Smit who is straight over the ball and gains the penalty as the Sunwolves' failed to release the ball. Missed opportunity there for the Sunwolves.

'73 - Great touch finder by Pisi, putting the ball deep into the Bulls 22. Can they make something of their position? The Bulls gave away a penalty to put themselves in this position, after a poor decision from a Bulls player to put his hands in the ruck.
