Green slams NRL bunker

By James MacSmith / Roar Guru

Premiership coach Paul Green has labelled referees boss Tony Archer “the minister for justification” as disillusion with the NRL’s bunker potential as a cure all mounts.

Cronulla mentor Shane Flanagan was highly critical of the central command centre for the second time in five days when he slammed two controversial decisions in his team’s win over Wests Tigers on Saturday.

And North Queensland coach Green weighed in for the second time in nine days on Sunday, still incensed at number of bunker decisions that went against the Cowboys in the previous round golden points loss to Brisbane.

“Asked in a radio interview if he had faith in the newly-implemented bunker to make the correct decisions, Green answered simply: “No”.

“There is no consistency in their decision making and they are getting some big decisions wrong,” he told Triple M.

“And one thing I want to know is why they call it the bunker … Who are they are at war with? The coaches?”

Green didn’t stop there, lining up Archer for special mention.

“Tony is doing his best, he does get back to you … eventually,” Green said.

“But I am tempted to call him the minister for justification, because that is how I feel after talking to him.

“I look at it and wonder if it is the same footage I am looking at with the decisions they come up with.

“The obstruction rule, you could talk about that all day. I am confused about it and I wonder how the fans feel.

“We want consistency and accountability, that is the main things as coaches we want to see.

“It is frustrating and I am sure other coaches feel the same way.”

It is only a game of footy, good grief all the hand wringing over not much. Does it really have an impact on your lives-if so that does not say much for your place in the world.

Tbh I've only seen two decisions that I've flat out disagreed with. Gilletts no try call in Broncs vs cows last week and the time they "technically but not really" ruled on a forward pass. The rest I've seen I could see why they've made their decision and while I might've made a different call I'm sure there are plenty who would've made the same call. Like the first try the cows scored against the dragons. When is the tackle complete? Surely a player can't just keep wiggling around for an eternity before he places the ball down, but I don't know the rules relating to that incident so for all I know he could wiggle and squirm until the ref calls time off, but then you have another grey area because if the same thing happened less than 1 metre out he'd be told to play the ball as soon as he hit the ground with a player completing the tackle. If he wiggled to get the ball down on the line he'd be penalised because the tackle was complete.

I agree. I am amazed Archer thinks the latter decision was wrong. Having watched the replays, the two incidents are NOT identical.. Other than in both instances, it is Gallen who inititiates contact.

Diving players should not be rewarded eg Gallen but the Penrith player yesterday played on and didn't dive he was rewarded with a penalty that guideline would be a priority under the obstruction rule as well as receiving the ball on the outside shoulder

Couldn't agree more commonsense and or a simplistic set of rules need to be implemented immediately the two examples that Flannery was whinging about are 1. Gallen obstructed the Wests Tigers player there was no milking on his behalf correct decision penalty 2. Tedesco caught the ball on the outside which means play on Lawrence made minimal contact with Gallen he attempted a dive Tedesco stepped two other sharks players then went back to the right and scored the try. Then we have archer come out and say Tedesco try should not have been awarded well tony you are not helping the situation. I believe the officials got both decisions right the current custodians of the game are complicating the whole process and are not being helpful that are confusing fans of the game

Exactly what i say, the same mob are still making the decisions, The Bunker is gradually returning to the bad old days they just put in more screens gave the blokes running it fancy names and carried on regardless. Tony Archer has a permanent roo in the headlights look about him.

Theres no point in having state of the art machinery if the operators are incompetent. Its like owning a Lanmborghini and having it driven by a chimp.

At some point the powers that be must accept that the technology that delivers the game to the bulk of the fans also highlights the mistakes made by the officials. Embracing the technology and utilising it better is the only way they can go (after they wake up to it) because they now financially depend on it.

.... and that is the problem isn't it. Every year we add more and more rules which over complicate our game and moves every decision closer and closer to needing a judicial review. Lets throw half the rules away and replace them with a fair play clause that gives the officials the ability to penalise any team using unfair or dangerous practices.

"Minister for justifications." Good to see Greeny still has his sense of humour. What's the alternative though? It's still only five rounds into the season, hopefully things will settle into more consistency as the year progresses. I live in hope.

I reckon that every coach\player\commentator that criticises the bunker should be made to work in it, see how easy it really is. Its easy to throw stones when there is no consequence.

Yeah agree... Where is everyone? Brad Arthur and Anthony Griffin had a go as well.... I hate the fact coaches do this but they all do it - if people don't think that's true, they're lying.

I like the Bunker system. Much preferable to the time wasting video ref system from last year. They will get the occasional call wrong, no doubt about that, especially with the obstruction rule which cannot be black and white and has to have some interpretation. Black and white obstruction leads to some players 'diving' and some ridiculous decisions where a player who would have had no impact on the play is obstructed so penaly therefore it has to have some interpretation. Unfortunately views will not be the same for some of these calls.

Paul, Every RL coach needs Olympic tolerance to cope with the vagaries of Archery. The enforcing of a particular section of the Rule Book each round also adds to the frustration. For such a simple game there are too many Rules inviting too many interpretations. Change the Rules so as to minimise the need for referee interpretation. The 'Ruck' is a nightmare for coach and fans and a target for the obnoxious 50/50 ad nauseam. The question 'Does the game really need this rule' needs to be answered. The cull is overdue. . The obstruction rule is a p.i.t.a, but at least it is relatively simple. It affords the Bunkermen the opportunity to practice the doctrine of consistency.

Flanno expresses justifiable concern about it and he's labelled a whinger and a cretin...Green,another to express negativity about it after a victory...and you can hear a pin drop...inconsistent rulings just stink no matter who or where they're made
