Anthony Mundine, 40, talks up return to rugby league

By The Roar / Editor

Boxer, former rugby league star and general loudmouth Anthony Mundine has talked up a possible return to rugby league, but not this year.

No, the man says that if he returns to the Greatest Game of All it will not be this year, or next year, but the year after.

By that time Mundine, currently 40, will be 42, and be by far the oldest rugby league player to don any kind of jersey in recent memory.

More rugby league:
» NRL grand final returns home to the SCG
» Let’s have the guts to call a penalty try when it happens
» On the chopping block: Who will be the first coach to get the axe

Still in great shape because of boxing, there is no doubt Mundine is a supreme athlete, and had dazzling footwork when he did play. But the idea of him gracing rugby league’s green pastures again baffles the mind, and makes us question what Mundine had for breakfast that morning.

It was late last week, at the launch of the NSW Knockout Health challenge, that Mundine began the chatter that will no doubt endure until and after he retires from professional boxing, with a fight with old rival Danny Green currently in the works.

“I may do it. Not next year, but the year after,” Mundine said with a cheeky smile on his face.

“I just got to get my speed up… and my feet working [and] dazzling and going again.

“I believe I can score some tries and set-up some tries.”

And when quizzed on which team he would play for if he decided to make a comeback:

“It’s gotta be the Dragons”.

Well, with Dragons fans unhappy with Gareth Widdop, and Benji on the way out, they are in need of new halves…

With all that said, it would be fascinating to see a potential return to something like the Auckland Nines, just for a bit of a giggle.

The only way Mundine would be better than Benji is that Mundine would make that inconsistent Dragon's team look like a bunch of champions by comparison (but they'd still suck). Can't blame Benji for the team's poor form.

Brainstrust actually being a boxer means you don't pick up leg injuries?? haha thanks for the giggle pal ,you've obviously never boxed, using your legs is just as important in boxing as using your arms obviously if your legs and footwork isn't top notch you cant move and dodge punches there for you will be punched in the head more often ,long runs every morning doesn't help either for wear and tear at age 40 he,s kidding himself he's talking crap but lets be honest that's what Mundine does best. There's no way boxing could prolong your career if you switched to it,Then you say Mundine was no good at league(he was the highest paid player when he quit) or boxing (he won 3 world titles and beat world rated boxers who had boxed there whole life's, Mundine had no amateur career) and then in the same breath you say once that has declined with age he should quit.

Gotta love "The Man." If he doesn't get back on the playing paddock for the Dragons, Anthony should become the next Dragons CEO!

"We are always interested in signing quality players" said Peter Doust when quizzed on the Mundine rumour.

Actually being a boxer means you don't pick up injuries to the legs which derail older players, you would dramtically increase your chances of having any brain related problems. If someone keeps themselves in good condition and lives a clean lifestyle they would be a candidate for a longer career after a switch to boxing. Mundine though he was only good at rugby league because he was a good athlete , same with his boxing he was never any good at that etiher, once that has declined with age then he should give up both. He realy should take up professional wrestling , Danny Green, would follow him across to continue make a living off him.

When no club wants to sign a 42 year old, volatile old boxer, he'll claim its because of racism.

Anyone who feels strongly enough to hate Mundine should at least be self-aware enough to understand that he's counting on it. I actually found this one entertaining, would have been said with a nod and wink and looking for a reaction. I'm sure he just can't believe he can still get publicity so easy.
