Bledisloe Cup could go to New York and London

By News / Wire

The Bledisloe Cup could be headed for New York or London in 2020 during the upgrade of ANZ Stadium.

The Australian Rugby Union (ARU) have been in contact with Victoria, Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia about the possibility of hosting its headline act, however overseas venues such as Twickenham are also considered a serious option.

“Argentina are playing their home game against us at Twickenham in the Rugby Championship this year, so there is a precedent there,” ARU general manager Rob Clarke told News Corp Australia.

“Even a city like New York, where there is a strong Australian and New Zealand expat presence, have expressed interest in getting more international rugby content. It is a consideration for us, certainly.”

Such a move would only fall in the years which Australia has the right to host two matches, and given 2019 is a World Cup year, it leaves 2020 as the only real viable option.

It would mark the first time a Bledisloe Cup match has been played outside of New Zealand or Australia in a three-match series.

Hong Kong has twice hosted matches and Tokyo once, however both were money-making fourth games added onto the end of the annual series.

I dunno, seems to me if you're playing on the other side of the world that's fundamentally changing the visiting team's obligations (the home team's too obv, but they're the ones proposing it). If the same schedule is used, NZ would have only 7 days to get home before the return fixture. Not saying it would or should be a revenue sharing situation but equally, I doubt Aus have the right to unilaterally play in another country without getting the ok from the visitors.

Using your own logic is got nought to do with the locals. It's the ARU home game. Sounds a bit silly now huh?

Given what poor competition we are for the Kiwis, I'm some times surprised they're willing to play us in the extended bledisloe anymore... we've got like a 17% strike rate against them since '03, so for the majority of the pro era we've hardly even been competitive.

Of course they're striking a brick wall it's ignorant to ask another organisation for a share in their revenue

The UAR knew they will have a black hole in their budget while funding a pro team and national contracts with a weak currency. To host a game at Twickenham with all seats available to be sold isn't an easy task due to negotiations with residents. The stadium also has to book concerts. The residents have already got the 7s down to reduced capacity

According to which contract? The away team don't dictate to the home team where they choose to host their tests

Bugger off with the revenue sharing argument it's the Wallabies home gate in the 4 Nations and/or the agreed three test Bledisloe Cup series where the number of home games rotate. The ARU are looking at the option of playing a home match abroad it's nought to do with NZ who don't have a say where the Wallabies choose to play their home games nor are they are entitled to certain gate takings. This isn't a fourth Bledisloe test where both unions have put out to tender to various organisations abroad get that out of your head.

There are a lot of incredibly misinformed people making a lot of assumptions Based on two facts : 1. The Contractual Agreement between NZ and AU for the Bledisloe Cup Matches 2. The 2020+ International Calendar has not even started discussion This has a long way to go before its viable

Overseas. That would require the agreement of the NZRU. Someone at the ARU needs to read the contract!

Sometimes you shake your head at the way the ARU operates. If they want to take the game to London and New York what is the purpose of doing so? Only money and nothing else. The USA have little interest in the game and playing two Southern Hemisphere rivals in London achieves what exactly? There is the option to play the second Bledisloe game (when Australia hosts 2) at any of the following venues (in no particular order): MCG, Adelaide Oval, Burswood Stadium in Perth, CBus on the Gold Coast, Hunter Stadium in Newcastle. Sure there are a couple of smaller grounds in the that list but if I recall correctly the ARU still see the Wallabies as the flagship team holding this sport up in Australia and they also said they wanted to engage grassroots across the country. How is taking a game to London or NYC beneficial for Australian Rugby Fans that always need to travel to Sydney or Brisbane to watch the All Black's?

They're not talking about it being held there tomorrow. It's years away. Plenty of time to sort out the turf. But either way it wouldn't be held at aami park, more likely the mcg or Etihad. Aami only hold about 35k. It would be a great atmosphere sold out but I don't think the aru would go for it as the y would want more tickets sold

And in 92. I think they've probably played WA a few times, but never a test in Perth.

I think you'll find they'd need NZ agreement to it ... and that would equal a share of the revenue

Absolutely DJW. The ARU has a chance to invest in it's own supporter base and the first thing it does is looks elsewhere to a fleeting, uncommitted market that might grow the sport .... in another country? Doh! Do we really need to wonder at all why Rugby in on the ropes, struggles to maintain a supporter base across Australia when this sort of conversation is going on instead of taking the opportunity to reward a largely volunteer supporter base that you rely on day in day out.

Perth definitely needs Trans-Tasman rugby union matches in 2018. NZRU have never had any games in Perth in its 85-year history. Instead, its only in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne during that time. And this will give a huge advantage for Perth All Black fans to see the games at the new Perth Stadium. As I have strong agenda about the new Perth Stadium, I think that this stadium will be suitable.

Bring the AB's & you will sell out the stadium. Plenty of Expat Kiwis here.
