Trent Robinson expecting a call over ref comments

Sydney Roosters coach Trent Robinson is expecting to attract scrutiny from NRL boss Todd Greenberg over controversial comments he made attacking the bunker and referee Ben Cummins in the wake of his side’s loss to St George Illawarra on Anzac Day.

Robinson savaged the NRL’s newly installed bunker and Cummins following the Roosters’ controversial 20-18 loss at Allianz Stadium on Monday.

Under NRL rules coaches are forbidden to comment on the performances of match officials, including the bunker. Coaches who break the rule are subject to a fine of at least $10,000 fine.

“Ben has been horrible and disrespectful to our players for many years and it has continued,” Robinson said.

“He speaks poorly to our players. He won’t look them in the eye.”

Robinson also lined up the bunker.

“The bunker has decided to be the onfield referee today, they jumped in at every occasion, they are not the match review committee,” he said.

“It was just soft on Anzac Day. We want to play a tough game and they were soft calls coming from the bunker, they were not good enough.

“I am not saying we would have won, I am saying we should have had a chance to win,”

Robinson was particularly incensed over a 50th minute penalty for a Kane Evans late tackle – the resulting penalty goal the difference between the two sides – and Dylan Napa being put on report late for a tackle on Taane Milne.

Robinson, who made the comments in the presence of Roosters chairman Nick Politis and CEO John Lee, knows the outburst sailed close to the wind.

When asked whether he would call referees boss Tony Archer first thing Tuesday morning to discuss the issues, Robinson replied: “I would say (NRL CEO) Todd (Greenberg) might be ringing me.”

What A Goose (cool name), believe Laurie Daley if you want. What happens when Laurie Daley and another high-profile ex-player disagree on a situation, as is often the case on Fox or Nine? Who do you believe then? Tell me, I'm curious? I don't think I'm a big deal, just commenting on something. That's what happens on websites such as these. Not trying to shift goalposts either, my point is the same - just because a team loses or a referee makes a decision you don't like, that doesn't automatically mean that the referee is arrogant, disrespectful or aloof or unapproachable or anything. I referred to the two examples by video (one of which wasn't even brought up by me) to demonstrate this. No need for you to make it personal mate, geez. I stand by my comments. The Anasta situation was a classic case of a player losing control and verbally bashing a referee who did his best to explain his decision and who only gave up doing so when it became clear the player wasn't interested in listening. The Friend situation on the weekend just gone was a case of a player asking for an explanation, the referee giving one, and the player not accepting it and continuing to badger the referee who again only gave up and got on with the game when it became clear the player wasn't interested.

When all is said and done about refs, the fact is we don't have a game without them. It all evens out over the course of a season you win some penalties you shouldn't and you give away some penalties that should not have been given. It happens to all teams and it always has. Yes some penalties may cost a game but your side will win a game at some point on a penalty that was not deserved. So if your smart you dont bite the hand that awards penalties. Shut up and get on with the game. You will never win the argument with the ref, NEVER. Its a bit like pissing into the wind.

That was the best thing i have seen in a game of league in years. Fa'alogo should have got a medal for that hit. Anasta deserved it. He clearly was choking him. Fa'alogo said after that game he could not catch his breath and he started to panic. Does not matter what anyone else thinks the only one who knows what was happening was Fa,alogo and the ref as it happens. Cummings got that situation totally correct.

Penalty counts mean nothing - a penalty for offside on the first tackle in the opponents 22 is different to a penalty in your own hwn 22 on the fifth tackle. How about the stripping the ball rule which can go either way and has the same effect on the team in possession - a loose carry call is just as detrimental.

I tend to believe Laurie Daley over an average punter like yourself mate. I know you probably think your a big deal but your biased in your comments was what i was talking about. Talk about trying to move the goalposts in your argument. Your original post had nothing to do with fairness for referees. Have another go! End of story!

Laurie Daley believes it wasn't a grapple tackle - so what? The referee thought it was, that's all that mattered - it's not as though the ref didn't punish Fa'alogo for punching Anasta, he simply believed that it was a grapple tackle first and therefore he followed the correct process in penalising the first offence. Like I said Anasta didn't even give Cummins the chance to explain why he made his decision, he just heard "The penalty's going against you" and then started abusing Cummins, who despite this - to his credit - still attempted to explain his decision to Anasta and only stopped when it became clear that Anasta didn't want a bar of it. Just because you get a few decisions that you don't like, this doesn't give you the right to abuse the referee and then label him "arrogant" or "disrespectful" or "aloof" or "unapproachable" or anything else like that. That's exactly what has happened with Robinson over the past couple of days. Poor form from him and totally unexpected because he's usually one of the calmer more rational and level-headed among the NRL coaches, even after a loss.

What a sook. When a winning coach complains about the ref then that is a story. Otherwise I will wait for the next Raiders loss for a coach to complain about a ref.

Arent captains only allowed to speak to refs at break of play - Robinson is covering for the fact that easts received a lot of close calls in an effort to even up the game - they didn't want a blowout.......

If you look at the video and listen to Laurie Daley he believes it wasn't even a grapple tackle. The guy just got up and punched Anasta in the face even before the penalty was blown. Anasta does nothing wrong gets a punch to the face and the penalty goes against him. https://youtu.be/vEtjH5Lr76I

Here we go "the bleeding hearts" argument. Have a look at post players mate when it comes to concussions in the after life off Rugby League. Retired players are now backing up those issues with real scary facts. I could only imagine that it wouldn't be fun living with those issues on a daily basis, it actually sounds like hell! But as long as you get to man grunt and beat your chest like a real man because lets face it a real man cant get concussion from sitting on a couch staring at a box can he. As someone who played League at a competitive level i agree with Matty Johns who believes the way they are going in protecting the head is what a real man would want, especially long term.

Don't forge the hugely forward pass in the lead up to their first try either.

The refereeing yesterday was rubbish and it was probably the worst refereeing I've seen in a long while in a game of RL, yesterday took me back to the old Greg 'Hollywood' Hartley days lol (who btw refereed when I was playing junior RL in the Eastern Suburbs and he was the same). The NRL should really be scrutinising and dropping some of these referees from adjudicating top games if they make so many mistakes, that's what use to happen in the old days. Cummins yesterday in parts of the game 'didn't have a clue' what was going on the field, and that is a big worry when it comes to a 1st class referee, and the bunker wasn't much better either.

I think this is my problem with the bunker. League is obviously a contact sport. When you slow things down though on replay (particularly crusher tackles) things look a whole lot worse than at normal speed.

"Braith Anasta sin bin"...I did have a look at this and what I saw was the following: - Anasta applying an inappropriate amount of pressure on an opponent's head in the tackle; - the referee blowing the penalty against Anasta - the Rabbitohs player reacting by punching Anasta - the referee upholding the original penalty against Anasta for the tackle, and trying to explain it to Anasta who screams "You're off your head! You're off your head!" to the referee's face before the referee has had a chance to explain the decision - the referee attempting to explain the decision to Anasta who continues to scream at him, so the referee gives up and talks to Anasta's captain again to explain the decision calmly and fairly - the referee sin-binning the Souths player - if you look at a longer version you can then see play restarting and Anasta flying downfield with the Roosters in defence, hitting an opponent, going in for seconds and getting into a fight with any opponent who approaches him (clearly out of control). I think if you look at the above - and then the video - you can make a reasonable conclusion that the referee made a decision to penalise Anasta, decided to uphold that decision because it was the first offence, attempt to explain that decision to Anasta only to be screamed at, explain the decision to Anasta's captain and then punish the Souths player for his part in it. About the only thing the ref did wrong was sin-bin the Souths player instead of sending him off entirely, but that wasn't what Anasta was blowing up about. I wouldn't say Cummins acted disrespectfully at all. He made a decision, attempted to explain it and only gave up when it became apparent that Anasta wouldn't listen. If anything it was Anasta acting like a complete goose.

Cummins gets the big games so easts wins figure would be less. The more interesting stat is the Cummins number of close decisions that go to the team behind on the scoreboard. Yesterday he referred all other try decisions except the one after a kick and possible offside and the Easts knockon.

I thought chooks very lucky, first try was from a pass two moves before that was a metre forward at least and on last both men were just in front of kicker before racing up to push ball backwards then score. What goes around comes around usually

Trent may have a point about the bunker but his side was the beneficiary of some very marginal second half decisions against Saints which are known as the second half comeback ie Cumming home with a wet sail. Cummings didn't go to video ref for the roosters try which came from a knock on which was amazing as they go for the flimsiest reasons normally and the forward pass which led to another Easts try was another highlight. Dugan had the ball knocked out of his hands (obviously) by a Easts player but was called for a knock on and Easts received all the marginal decisions. The Easts Napa report was when the game was virtually over and the necessity of a close game was gone. St George received a bizarre penalty for a late? tackle and report when they were going to score so therefore enabled kick at goal which was a lesser outcome for the benefit of a close match but Easts Guerra late tackled McCrone in similar circumstances and nothing but a 20 restart. Yes I am neutral

It's quite obvious Robinson is feeling the pressure for the first time in his Roosters tenure....those stats you've put up have more to do with the teams they played rather than who was refereeing.
