Sorry Browny, you've got it wrong – again!

By Michelle Vogel / Roar Pro

Hot on the heels of Jonathan Brown’s controversial “muzzle” comments after Richmond captain, Trent Cotchin’s wife, Brooke, spoke out in support of her husband, he’s at it again!

This time, Brown is speaking out against players apologising to opponents for on-field incidents.

Richmond’s Alex Rance called a press conference yesterday to publicly apologise for his head strike to Melbourne’s Jack Watts. Genuinely remorseful, Rance stood up and said he was appalled by his on-field behaviour and that it’s never okay to do what he did. Rance copped a two-week suspension for his indiscretion. He also sent Watts a text message after the game.

Likewise, Tomas Bugg of Melbourne sent a “sorry, mate” text to Richmond’s Jack Riewoldt after pushing him while he was attempting to leave the field following a rolled ankle. Caught up in the moment, Bugg failed to see two of Richmond’s support staff helping Riewoldt leave the ground.

Brown appeared on Nova 100, saying, “I don’t see the need to apologise, we’re on the field of battle out there between the white lines… texts weren’t around for especially the early part of my career, but no way known I’d text a player unless I’d king hit him or put him in hospital.”

We’re living in a time where men are dying because of one punch. This is our harsh reality. One stupid, cowardly act, whether it’s on the street, in a pub or on a football field, one punch can kill. It has killed.

Promising young footballer, Patrick Cronin, was buried today (April 27). He was just 19. He died last week, two days after being punched from behind during a wild, all-in- brawl at the Windy Mile Hotel in Diamond Creek, Victoria. He was hit as he tried to pull a friend out of the melee. That afternoon he played his first senior game, alongside his brother, Lucas, for the Lower Plenty Football Club. It would also be his last.

For Brown to mention the words “king hit,” especially in the climate we’re living in, it’s totally irresponsible. It’s heartless. It’s clueless. It’s wrong!

There is nothing “king-like” about knocking someone out. White line fever doesn’t excuse intentional brutality.

Jonathan Brown is the one who should be apologising now. Where’s his muzzle?

The old days we used to shake hands at the end of the game and have a chat. Whatever happened on the field is forgotten about. Although I do believe that people who is involved in foul play should be suspended.

Kids might not, however surely isn't that when decent parenting occurs? A parent worth a grain of salt would be ensuring their children understand right from wrong. Parents need to talk to their kids and explain what Alex Rance did was wrong. Or do we just let our kids listen to everything the world throws at them and get them to work it all out themselves without providing any context?

Ha. I criticise Michelle, calling her "irrational and hysterical", and my comment gets removed. There was no profanity involved or anything. Just goes to show Michelle is happy to throw dirt at Jonathan Brown (without any valid reason) but can't accept being criticised herselfn.

So one one hand you say who is he to say what he has, then you go and say he is a goose and judge and say he shouldn't be saying what he said his opinion he can say what he likes

Trouble is, kids don't differentiate between real life and the football field. Rance understands this, and decided to make a public apology because he is a decent human being. Brown doesn't understand something as simple as that. I sympathize though. Its not his fault he is simple, and there is no law to say you can't say stupid things. More importantly it is Michelle's right to point out when he does say stupid things. Its called free speech. We just need to recognise Brown for what he is. A big boofy footballer that has never thought about what comes out of his mouth, and probably never will. I have chosen not to watch or listen to any shows he is on. Sooner or later broadcasters will notice that a large proportion of the thinking public don't like ignorance, and take him off.

Here we go again, Another person who has never played the sport( possibly at any level ) at the top level bagging someone who has and has an opinion. The level of passion and determination these players have once on the field is like nothing you or any other couch commentator can comprehend. These players are out there with one thing in mind, to win at any cost, players are always niggling each other with punches, not only to the back of the head but all over the body. if you believe that a player is even remotely thinking about if he is going to hurt another player, you are a fool to yourself and a burden to others. Having played VFA level back in the 80's what Rance did was just a love tap. And having just had ANZAC day you remind me of a saying I heard a couple of years ago, . In 1942 eighteen year old men were storming the beaches at Normandy into almost certain death, now they need a safe room because words hurt them. Toughen up, understand that top level sport is not to your understanding and move on. I also believe that in no way did Brown mention king hit and Patrick Cronin in the same sentence that was in fact you........................

I think your blowing this particular act by rance out of proportion michelle, I can assure you not many coaches would be happy with him apologising There was no damage done, move on its part of footy, players get clipped like that all the time, dont sensationlise these small issues If your gonna write articles like this be prepared to be challenged about them

If you call him a footy commentator and not a "media presenter", perhaps you won't be so distressed, Robert. Jonathan Brown was not making a social comment. He was making a comment on the footy. No one listens to Brown for the aesthetics of his diction. He has a "been there done that...rubber on the road" reading of footy. It is terrific. Look elsewhere for lifestyle wisdom.

Fact is, the more you read and hear from J Browns mouth, the more you realise he isn't very intelligent , insightful or understanding of anything outside the white lines. It also reflects poorly on those who defend him, or criticise someone who points out his inadequacies as a media presenter.

I think 'brain fade' is the biggest cop-out in sport. Actions speak louder than words. Brown got suspended a bunch of times in his career but never for smacking someone who couldn't defend themselves in the back of the head. Youtube him - you'll get highlights packages and a bunch of clips of his mark of the year. If these kids (who are apparently influenced by retirees) want to watch him in action this is what they'll see. Type in Rance's name and the first video that comes up is 'Alex Rance dog shot'. Would you think this may have influenced Rance's decision to call a press conference? Which weird kids are watching press conferences (at all firstly) and thinking 'jeez I was going to punch someone in the back of the head this week but since Rance decided to apologise (after being suspended) I had better give it a miss'.

I'm still away and i don't have all of the pieces of this story but Brown is a goose and the longer that he has an audience the more likely it is that people will see him for what he is. Lovely bloke but who are you to be telling anyone what they should do, think or say? Kudos to any any player that speaks his mind. The less mindless robots that we have in the game (on all levels) the better. This is an insight into the IQ of media personalities. Get rid of him and give me some intelligently commentary for a change and stop insulting my intelligence.

Disgusting article to bring up Cronin as an excuse to slander Brown. Really mindless and imflammatory. If you want to write on social issues related to the game, how about you keep some perspective, and comment with a bit more consideration - just like you're expecting Brown to do.

What Alex Rance did was stupid, and he deserved to be suspended. However I think calling a press conference for this particular incident was a bit over the top.

Yep, Brown actually said it's bad to king hit or put someone in hospital so it's amazing acrobatics for Michelle to twist his meaning. I didn't see Bugg's hit but Rance's little nudge on Watts posed no threat of serious injury, so Michelle really needs to find a better case if she wants to talk about on-field risks (as opposed to risks in joining in bar fights, which are risks on a different scale). As for Brownie's comments about apologies, up to him. But for me the more interesting thing about Rance's apology was that it seemed sincere, in comparison to all the other laughable 'pseudo-apologies' we've seen from AFL players in recent years.

"Wow, what a load of crap, you seriously think a press conference needs to be called to apologise for every indiscretion." I think it was. Sticking an elbow in the back of someone's head while they are face down in the turf is a grub act. It's a cheap shot, it's dirty, and it was pretty dumb. It strikes me as completely out of character for Alex Rance to assault someone like this, and I respect him going out of his way to make it clear to everyone that such behaviour is something he considers unacceptable no matter what.

Wow, what a load of crap, you seriously think a press conference needs to be called to apologise for every indiscretion. He got two weeks, the afl obviously didn't think it two bad or he would have got a lot more then two weeks. People saying he done it because he's Christian, um I pretty sure part of Christianity is not seeking publicity for things. If he wants to apologise fine, ring, text, if asked by the media admit he apologised, but seriously a press conference!!!
