The Roar's AFL expert tips and predictions: Round 6

By Josh / Expert

Hello Roarers and welcome to another week of AFL expert tips! Round 6 is shaping up to be a quality week of football with a number of intriguing contests on the slate.

The match of the week no doubt will be the top-of-the-table clash between North Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs. How great is it to see two of the smaller teams in the league not only matched up on a Friday night, but also thriving at the top of the competition?

EVERY AFL GAME THIS YEAR LIVE ON FOXTEL

Picking a winner in this one is pretty tough – we’ve got the league’s most points scored in North Melbourne coming up against the league’s least points conceded in the Bulldogs, and it should make for a thrilling contest.

The Bulldogs have injuries to some important players and while they’ve dealt with that pretty well in the past two weeks they’ve done so against relatively poor opposition, and North will put a bit more pressure on them than Carlton and Brisbane have. I’m tipping North to get up, but I’m a mad Roos fan and I won’t lie, that factors in a bit.

Melbourne and St Kilda looks like a fascinating contest on Saturday afternoon as two of the league’s rebuilders will go head to head and look to claim a win. Could definitely go either way this one, but I reckon the Dees have been playing better footy and will take the win here.

Later that day the Giants and the Hawks will meet at Spotless Stadium in a match that is really tempting to tip the upset in. The Hawks have escaped with wins in their last three matches but the Giants are primed to give them a run for their money after some good form in recent weeks and with Jeremy Cameron back in the fold.

If I wasn’t trailing the pack by two tips I’d consider taking a risk and picking the Giants here, but just to play it safe I’m going to back in the Hawks to add another win to their ledger.

Then on Saturday night Richmond and Port Adelaide will meet in a match between two of the most disappointing sides this season. One of them will get a vital win here that could be a spark for a surge back into form – the other one will be close to considering it season over.

The absence of Alex Rance has me tipping Port to get up and win, he is the glue that holds the Richmond backline together and there’s not really an obvious candidate to step up and lead the defence in his absence.

The rest of this week’s matches look fairly straightforward – Adelaide should make short work of Fremantle, and ditto Geelong against Gold Coast, with the outsiders in those matches having both injury and poor form to contend with. Sydney should comfortably beat Brisbane.

Carlton against Essendon and West Coast against Collingwood are matches where you should be able to tip the home team with confidence, though there is probably more of a chance of an upset in one of these than there is in the three mentioned above – still pretty low though.

Regular readers will be aware that I’ve managed to screw up my Lock of the Week two weeks in a row now, incorrectly tipping Gold Coast over Brisbane, and Fremantle over Carlton. If I don’t get it this week it might need a new gimmick! At any rate, this week I’ll be locking in the Crows to send the Dockers to 0-6.

Michael di Fabrizio
Friday night is the biggest game of the round and all is as it should be. North Melbourne are up and about, on top of the ladder. The Western Bulldogs are looking pretty strong in their own right, but their injury-a-week trajectory is cause for concern.

I’m sticking with the Dogs, which should come as no surprise to regular followers of this column. I’m yet to be convinced on North, given their soft draw to date and how little they’ve done with it. They rank fifth for percentage.

The Dogs, meanwhile, have genuinely put teams away. As in, they buried Fremantle. They buried St Kilda. They gave Carlton and Brisbane no chance. And when they did go up against a top team — Hawthorn — they went toe-to-toe.

North went up against a good team in Adelaide and won by 10, that’s true. But you weigh it all up, the Dogs appear the stronger team.

The rest of my tips are probably fairly standard. Is there an upset in the mix? I was tempted to have a look at St Kilda against Melbourne, but the Dees are starting to become slightly risky to tip against. Who knew?

GWS and Hawthorn should be a good game, but “Hawthorn by 3” seems like a done-deal at this point.

BJ Conkey
The Kangaroos’ unbeaten run will be tested by the Bulldogs, and despite the losses of Bob Murphy and Jason Johannisen I back their defence to limit North’s scoring in the match of the round.

On Saturday there’s a big chance for the Demons to win three games in a row for the first time in six years. Max Gawn has been amazing in the ruck and he’ll go a long way to deciding Melbourne’s fate.

These two teams had a tight fixture at the same ground last year, and I’m expecting another close one with Melbourne to have enough in the tank.

The match between the Tigers and the Power could simply come down to who makes the fewest mistakes, given the lack of confidence of both teams. Both have conceded 550 points in five rounds so expect a shoot-out at the ‘G if the conditions are fine.

With Alex Rance out through suspension, I’m backing Jack Riewoldt and Dustin Martin to both step up to the plate.

This weather has me but worried about the Blues chances, traditionally it helps the underdog just hoping it effects the bombers high uncontested possession game more and given the blues usually turn the ball over a lot anyway perhaps it won't hurt them as much.

An even duller week now, Josh. You and I tipped exactly the same after Saturday evening, so one way or another I'll be one up at the end of the week. Because you tipped Hawthorn. Missed it by that much.

Well this is going to be a bit of a dull week now - Everyone has tipped the exact same after Friday night, so one way or another I'll be one up at the end of the week, whether it's 1 to 0 or 9 to 8.

I may be Carlton through and through, but my money is on the Dons. Carlton aren't good enough yet to win two in a row. I just have this sneaky feeling that Essendon are going to win this one.

First a little update: I'm changing my tip to Richmond on the back of Port having more outs that expected. I'm the editor, I can do what I want ;) Secondly: Crowd tips are in. And the Bulldogs/North match-up is the closest-run tip we have had so far this year, it's currently 50.9% in favour of the dogs, 49.1% in favour of North. Hawthorn are at 60/40 over the Giants, and Richmond have almost exactly 2/3rds of the vote against Port, every other match up swings heavily in favour of the favourite.

The upset of the round will be Hawthorn responding to their recent performances by trouncing GWS.

Poor Adelaide, they were doing so well, and now they're gonna lose to Fremantle. That lock is a darn shame.

Michael H i'll be honest with you although The Dees have won 2 games in a row to me that's the toughest one to pick, and with Melbourne playing away i reckon The Saints can do it, and i noticed too you have selected Port to knock off the Tigers, how would you be and both sides will be playing desperate footy, and if Richmond do lose the knives will be a lot sharper. Being a Pies fan you are pretty spot on could be more than 50 points. Upset of the round GWS to beat the Hawkers

Yeah a 10 minute lapse against the Tiges really hurt but I am not that fussed about wins - it is the process and devleopment and both of those things are going very well. I agree on the goal kicking - but it will come - they are getting a lot more marks inside 50 this year and at some point they will start getting the reward.

Macca: I did read the article in The Age and agreed with it. I think Weitering has the makings of a great full back. Plowman has impressed. Carlton need to improve their kicking for goal. Carlton have performed better than expected, I must admit. You must be kicking yourself that they didn't knock off the Tigers. Carlton are a big chance against the Bombers. Yes I have adjusted my thinking. Like I said last week, I have faith in Bolton.

North will comfortably beat the Bulldogs by about 25/35 points. Melbourne and St Kilda could be a close one, but I'm tipping Saints to cause a mini-upset by 9 points. Adelaide will demolish Fremantle by about 54 points (and that's me being generous). Hawthorn will easily dispose of GWS by about 42 points. Port and Richmond will be close, but I think Port will narrowly win by 5. Geelong will skits the Suns by 31. Sydney will have an easy win by about 45 over the Lions. Essendon and Carlton could go either way, I'm randomly guessing Carlton. Eagles will beat Collingwood by about 50.

There is always one game every week that's a toughie to pick, but i guess the easy way is to select is the sides latest form, with GWS & Hawthorn on form you would i guess have to for The Hawkers and the chances of GWS snatching a victory at their home ground. I noticed they knocked them off last year, and could Melbourne win their third game in a row? Now St.kilda have had a pretty good record against the Dees, although the Saints performance last week was pretty poor. It will be interesting to see how The Dees will perform away from the M.C.G.? I am unsure of Melbourne's win loss ratio, are The Saints a chance?

Hal - I agree Daniher is a key as he will be the most dangerous forward on the ground but I am confident the blues can contain him and restrict the bombers scoring (did you see the article in the age today discussing how much the blues have improved defensively) as their is only 1 team that is worse offensively than the blues this year and that is Essendon (it should also be mentioned that the bombers have only played the Suns & Geelong out of the current top 8 sides while the blues have played the Bulldogs, Swans & Suns) While I think Parish is a great player I am confident the blues midfield will get an edge. And after 5 consecutive weeks of underestimating the blues have you adjusted your thinking yet?

All valid and for sure your lads are an excellent chance, just not favoured. Di Fab and Conk seem to be going on the vibe rather than the likelihood.

I am tipping North to get the job done against the injured Footscray. Port to run out in front of Richmond. Hawthorn will find a way to win against the Giants. St Kilda to end Melbourne's fantasy run. West Coast to dispatch Collingwood. Geelong to smash the Gold Coast. Adelaide to skittle Freo. Essendon and Carlton to play out a draw. This game could go either way. If Carlton can stop Daniher they win but if they let Daniher and Parish run riot the Dons win.
