Jarryd Hayne selected in Fiji's rugby sevens squad for London

By The Roar / Editor

After a whirlwind week where he retired from the NFL and announced his intentions to play for Fiji at the Olympics, Jarryd Hayne has moved a step closer to his new dream.

The 28-year-old code hopper was officially named in Fiji’s 12-man squad to play in the London Sevens tournament.

The former Parramatta rugby league player will have to hit the ground running after limited training with the Fijian team.

Fiji plays England, Wales and Australia in a big first day of action. The Fijian team has the chance to wrap up the World Sevens series with a solid performance.

It remains to be seen how much game time Hayne will receive, but his inclusion will no doubt boost the interest in the tournament, especially if he lines up against Australia early on Sunday morning (AEST).

Many times while watching an NRL match, i have come across the commentators pointing out player ages, a few times they even mentioned that being 28 is considered "old" in league..I see a few big names nearing that age so might consider a change in code....Hayne is 28, he figures he would be considered old in league so decided to try his hand in union making 7's his first jump to teh code...sounds like an odd decision but could work out for him..Many of the bug name Fiji 7's stars (A few australian and NZ ones too) made a name for themselves playing 7's long before being regarded as great 15's players..2 current major names surely are Australian flyhalf, bernard foley and NZ winger Julian Savea...heck even Michael Hooper is a renowned 7's player ..james o'connor too...so if a player switches from league to union, going thru 7's might actually not be a bad option...especially for a backline player....if this is successful, expect Hayne to be named at Fullback for the Flying Fijians (Fiji 15's) as well...

This is a crazy story. Hayne to play at 7s in the Olympics with no playing rugby, no 7s experience or specific training. Horrifying at several levels. The injustice for #13. The potential loss of a gold medal. Roll forward three years. Hayne lining up for Fiji at the RWC. Another five Fijian born players who might have lined up for NZ, Australia, England etc. Maybe not so crazy.

How is Peter Fitzsimons responsible for the cultural understanding of words in other countries? His target audience is Australia. Isn't it the responsibility of the reader to understand the cultural difference? The Fijian RFU CEO was rash in his condemnation, and even looks a bit foolish... in my opinion.

The worst thing about the Australian media is the nauseating coverage of AFL and NRL. As bad as they are give me Franno and George Hook everyday of the week and plus more

If Hayne plays against Australia, he will possibly be targeted in the clean out part of the game, something, that will be so new to him. Seven's is not a game that is learn' t in just a week or so, so it will be interesting to see as to how he handle's it. We only have to look at SBW, to see that he, after having running time in about four tournaments, is still learning.

If we are allowed 5 teams the PI at least deserve one team even if it is a combined team. Besides if based in say Auckland or Sydney they would draw a crowd equal to or better than any of our teams at the moment.

We have enough Fijian wingers available for the Wallabies now. The ARU is better spending their money on buying some better forwards!

Gotta love the comment "his inclusion will no doubt boost the interest in the tournament, especially if he lines up against Australia early on Sunday morning (AEST)". Imagine all those people getting up at 2.54am tomorrow morning to watch a game lasting 14 minutes. I'd like to see that!

I am genuinely interested to see how he goes, because 7s has really developed into a very sepcialised thing now. It's no longer a game that guys can just transition from real 15 man rugby with ease, and with Hayne spent a year in the NFL where each play he only had one job, it'll be a bigger change than for guys like Cooper or SBW and in all honesty I can see Hayne being a liability to Fiji

This hilarious cartoon, published on the Guardian Australia website this week, sums up the farcical nature of the "Hayne Plane" saga: https://www.theguardian.com/sport/picture/2016/may/19/david-squires-on-jarryd-haynes-global-sporting-adventures

He wouldn't play the same role that Quad would so I doubt that Badge is taking his spot.

Last year, All Blacks went to Samoa and paid for the costs. Also the Islands have their own issues to sort out before they deserve a SR team.

The dream of most rugby players is a high paid European contract not to play rugby 7's. The Pacific islands is treated like the ghetto of international rugby despite 30% of the rugby world cup players being Polynesian. When was the last time a richer rugby nation played in FIji, or they staged the sevens there, its been over 10 years. It would seem that Pacific island teams should be in super rugby yet they are treated like lepers. Rugby league is even more neglectful of the region, they know they get the PAcific islands as their b-card becuase they have so many Polynesians but how much money actually goes to the Pacific islands themselves.. The worst is AFL, these tightwads provide a massive 45k for PNG a year. Hayne for reasons best know to the Australian media seems to have become a big commodity so Fiji have to select him to make money.

Cummings is a funny guy but why Friend would include him over Cooper defies belief.

Exactly ... That's why I'm sure they're pleased that the decision of whether to waste scarce cash on a aging hyped league player has been taken off the shelf ..
