NRL match-fixing probe: Drop in offshore odds being investigated

By News / Wire

The price offered for a South Sydney win by eight points or more reportedly dropped 19 cents with a Caribbean firm in the two days before kick off against Manly last year.

The round 16 match is one of two Manly matches being placed under the microscope by NSW Police and the organised crime squad, along with the Sea Eagles round 24 clash with Parramatta.

Police are aware of the drop in price, which opened at $1.93 with online betting giant Pinnacle before falling into $1.74 according to Fairfax Media.

No Australian licensed betting companies have reported alarming trends in the lead-up to either match, with all 21 required to alert the NRL if they have any concerns over any matches.

However Pinnacle is one of 60 other companies around the world who accept bets on the code but are not signatories to the same integrity agreements with the NRL.

The firm, based on the island of Curacao and in Malta, is also said to have higher betting limits and take more money on Australian sports than its competitors.

More to come.

NOIP, How can you be so sure that there was no suspicious betting - you don't have access to the records. You probably thought Ryan tandy was innocent which raises the question why would someone bet so much money on a game if only one player was involved

Therein lies the issue though... it is betting of any sort that gets these blokes in trouble... debt, bookies etc... hard to enforce, and very hypocritical given the massive number of betting agencies clamouring around the game...

Audit trails, champ. And there is absolutely zero evidence of any betting irregularities on these games. Zero.

1.93 to 1.74 you say? gosh horror Cronulla shortened from 2.00 to 1.65 at Pinnacle for Mondays game. Are we going to throw allegations at that game?

Betting on the NRL. It's part of their contract. Anyone involved with the club also generally is unable to bet on NRL games as a condition of their contract for employment for reasons of inside info, etc.

Is it betting full-stop, or betting on the NRL? Pretty impossible to stop these young blokes betting on everything... The casual nature of betting these days is an issue... standing around and most of your mates are on their phones dropping money left right and centre should be a concern for everyone really...

Gambling is a stain on all sports and is an internationally recognised problem when cheating gets involved. It has happened throughout history, will happen today and in the future and it's difficult to police. In the old days?? Ask the magpies fans about Darcy Lawler and that completes the old days debate.

Thank you CK96. Will take copies for future reference. Hard to get an international company to pay a fee for using the NRL's product at the moment. We need a 'Panama Papers' scenario plus, to remedy the current situation. New laws would probably have to be so draconian and interfere with normal trading operations and penalise the innocent.

But they can stop the high profile 'gambling' that they have allowed in regards to betting on RL. They cannot do anything about offshore gambling, that is not the issue here, what is the issue is that the NRL are allowing RL to be embroiled in this messy gambling situations and they are giving these gambling establishments their highest priority. That is what we object to and that is what will get RL and the NRL into a messy situation(s) like this and will make RL a joke of a sport to the honest fans, In the old days this was never ever evident with RL and RL was shielded form all these messy gambling incidents.

MAX, This is from an article on NRL.com. Jim Doyle. 'Mr Doyle said the new zero tolerance policy would see: • Every player from every club will be required to sign a document demonstrating that they fully understand and will comply with the NRL's betting rules. • All staff and officials will be required to confirm that they fully understand and will comply with the betting rules. • Audits of betting records will be conducted more regularly to detect if any breaches occur. • Players, staff and officials will in future face termination or suspension for any breach – no matter how small the bet is.' http://www.nrl.com/nrl-statement-on-betting-on-rugby-league/tabid/10874/newsid/80135/default.aspx And anotherreference to the Betting Regs re NRL: https://www.nrl.com/nrlhq/referencecentre/sportsbetting/tabid/10444/default.aspx Basically they say you shouldnt do it and it seems like every player. official and etc involved with teh game is involced.

Can you actually force an international betting company to NOT bet on your sport? I wouldn't think the NRL are able to legislate or control that....

How is this the NRL "allowing" this to happen? You can't stop people in another country running a book. They have no jurisdiction in Curacao?!

More to come. Would be beneficial to see a flow cart to follow the money. I had to refer to an atlas to confirm the location of Curacao. If every player, as a condition of being registered signed a stat dec declaring that he would not have a bet directly or indirectly on any NRL game with life disqualification the penalty for non adherence, only an idiot would take the risk or be coerced by being compromised into doing so.

What a mess and the NRL is allowing all this to happen. RL will be the one to suffer from all this and the damage is already done.

I think all of this betting is very messy, just reading everything that is allowed to be betted on makes me feel uncomfortable. I didn't realise it was as huge as it is, I guess I was so much enjoying the game and not really interested in the advertising of the TAB side of it. NRL probably need to be careful that the fans don't start doubting what's real and what's not.
