Brumbies vs Reds highlights: Brumbies cruise to bonus point win

By Connor Bennett / Editor

The Brumbies and Reds have returned from the June break, and will take each other on for the first time this year. Join The Roar from 7:45pm (AEST) for all the live highlights and action.

The Reds have had a tumultuous season so far in 2016, sitting at the wrong end of the standings with just three wins from 12 games.

Despite their less than ideal situation, the Reds are coming into this one off a bye and a win over the Sunwolves, which is better preparation than they’ve had most of the year.

The Brumbies, on the other hand, are duking it out with the Waratahs for a finals berth, currently just edging ahead of their NSW rivals on points difference.

With a stacked New Zealand conference, there’s only one realistic spot available for Australian teams, so a win for the Brumbies is vital to create some sort of gap at the top.

Much like the visitors to their Canberra fortress tonight, the Brumbies are also coming off a bye and a win over the Sunwolves, who they ran riot over in a dominant 66-5 display.

Team News
Both sides are blooding new talent this week, bringing in four debutants between them.

For the Brumbies, currently uncontracted No.8 Ben Hyne has been given the surprise call up to replace Wallaby David Pocock, handing the young former tradie his Super Rugby debut.

In another debut of sorts, 22-year old Joe Powell will get his first run on start tonight at halfback for the home side.

Matt Toomua returns to Super Rugby from the knee injury that halted his Wallabies progress throughout the June internationals.

Andrew Smith is also returning for the Brumbies for the first time since Round 2. Smith has been missing in action for the majority of the season after suffering a serious foot injury early on.

For the Reds, co-coaches Matt O’Connor and Nick Stiles have made a host of changes to their match day squad.

Young gun Jack Tuttle will make his debut at fullback this week, replacing the injured Karmichael Hunt who could miss the rest of the season.

Leroy Houston will play his first game of Super Rugby in five years, he’ll come off the bench having returned to the Reds from a stint with European giants Bath.

Wallaby Kane Douglas will play his first game of rugby since the World Cup final last year, having recovered from a serious knee injury to make his Reds debut off the bench.

Also getting a debut cap off the bench is 20-year old Taniela Tupou, better known as ‘Tongan Thor’, who jumped into the rugby spotlight through his Youtube videos in schoolboy rugby.

Rob Simmons will be absent for the fixture, having succumbed to the injury that troubled him during the Test series against England. He will be replaced by New Zealand teenager Lurkhan Tui in the second row.

Prediction
The Brumbies are flying high at the pointy end of the standings, but they desperately need a win to create that cushion over the ever-present Waratahs.

The Reds on the other hand have nothing to lose. They’re chopping and changing in preparation for next season already, and that kind of attitude can be a real danger for the Brumbies if they’re not careful.

The home side has a strong outfit despite some changes of their own, and should realistically get the job done without too much hassle.

Missed the match but sounds that like George Smith he is putting in poor kicks. They are both brilliant players but George certainly killed a few test matches for us putting in rubbish kicks at the death when we needed ball in hand. On a related note, one of the highlights of the Tahs v Moondawgs was Bobby Horne putting an absolute pearler of a kick in. Am curious now as to whether that was a fluke or if he actually has a kicking game.

In a team desperately short of top class talent and experience in the backline, Gill kicks because he has little confidence in his team-mates to execute the right tactics. Gill has an exceptional understanding of how rugby is played as evidenced by his ability to time his pilfering attacks, tackles and pick and drive runs. I doubt anyone on this site or the Reds coaching staff would be able to give him advice on how to play the game that he would take seriously. Like George Smith, Gill can do all that is required of a #7 and more. I doubt Gill's kicks produced worse outcomes than the actions of other available Reds players would have done in the circumstances. Gill should be the captain and he should have taken the penalty kick for the line at the 40 minute mark.

Lop sided scoreline to Brumbies. Cubelli was the main difference in the end (shame he aint an Aussie). Reds did their usual amount of stupid things, but were unlucky with officialdom in a big way and had many rookies.

I saw Tupou break the line in tight and Houston struggle to bend it a little wider.

douglas had 32 minutes.. houston was a no show before in the reds.. and not that flash at bath.. that is why they recruited players like david denton.. sadly he will not be solving our national 8 problems..

Taefu should take over all shots. Jake Mac can sit on the bench if he is lucky. Taniela did well. Houston bit of a no show, ran sideways too much. Douglas innefective. Gilly everywhere again but probably tried to do too much. Duncan had some great touches, refer to point 2. There was a lot to like about the reds tonight but a lot to work on too.

Bit harsh on Douglas, he played about 12minutes when it was loose at the end. If you re-watch I think you'll find Houston's 20min cameo pretty impressive. Agree on Tuttle, Gill ( an awesome rugby brain except he's got this impulse to kick ) and Chris Kuridrani who looked twice as potent and energetic as Second Gear Tevita.

A sloppy game of rugby, in the first half particular, in frosty Canberra conditions. 20 handling errors in the first half, but just 3 in the second half between both sides. Double the amount of missed tackles from the Reds, and the wrong end of the possession split really hurt them in the end.

Was a woeful first thirty minutes. Almost switched it off. Not sure if there was more players down receiving treatment or more dropped ball. But picked up after that and was entertaining from then on. Kerevi and Gill were outstanding and LLF, Fardy and Cubelli for the Brums. I thought Powell was pretty ordinary - a number of dusty passes. Tongan Thor looked pretty darn good. And the Reds should be pretty happy with the efforts of Tuttle, Paiaua, Houston and Lukhan Tui. I think they need to give Magnay more game time. That kid's wasted on the bench.

I think it was just generally underwhelming for the Reds. I know they're low in the standings with a tough season, and they weren't really expected to win tonight, but you can't help feel that they played beneath themselves around the park

Three tries in the final ten minutes as the game began to open up, but the Reds just couldn't keep up in the second 40 after heading into the half time break just five points down

Have barely seen Douglas in this game. No matter who is at 10 they are too deep. Coaching issue. Tuttle showed promise with his running. Gill showed why he's down the pecking order. Exceptional performance littered with errors such as poor kicks, knock ons. Tupou struggled at first in the scrum but did will when he scrummed against their reserves. Did well taking on hard runs around the ground as well. Thought Chris Kuridrani made some exceptional defensive reads. Was disappointed with Houston. Felt young Tupou was for more effective, willing and taking the ball at pace in making tight runs.

78' Reds work it left off the line out, just 7 metres out now. Big chance on the right wing!! Cover defence scrambles well for the Brumbies... but they can't hold them out!!! TRY REDS!!! Try on debut for the Tongan Thor!! Taniela Tupou crashes over from 5 metres out in his first appearance at Super Rugby level. The Brumbies did well to hold out initially on the right edge, but they were out numbered and out muscled. Brumbies - 43 Reds - 24

75' The Brumbies are just rolling forward now. Less than 5 metres out. Pick and go, one off either side of the ruck before heading wide... AND THEY'RE IN AGAIN!!! TRY BRUMBIES!! Toua gives the long ball to Taliauli who falls over the line on the left edge unmarked. Superb work in the middle by the big men to draw the Reds in towards the post, before firing it out wide and really driving the nail into the coffin Brumbies - 43 Reds - 17

74' Fantastic kick and chase from the Brumbies. Tuttle had no other choice but to find touch, just 30 from his own line. Big chance for the home side to really pack on the points here Brumbies - 36 Reds - 17
