Bob Fulton to step down from NSW selection role

By The Roar / Editor

Bob ‘Bozo’ Fulton is reportedly set to step away from his role as a selector for the NSW Blues, with the indication being that he will take up a full-time role as head of football for the Manly Sea Eagles.

He has been working with Manly – the club where he spent the bulk of illustrious playing and coaching career – as a part-time consultant.

Fulton will reportedly inform NSW coach Laurie Daley of his decision during a conversation today, in which they will finalise the selection of their team for Game 3, which is to be released on Monday.

Fulton has worked as a selector for the Blues since 1999, working with Daley and former coaches Craig Bellamy and Ricky Stuart.

He has come under fire during this State of Origin series – as the selector of a perennially losing team is always bound to do – and his decision to step away may signal the end of an era. Blues fans will be hoping it also means the beginning of new, much brighter one.

He is said to be undecided as to whether or not he will continue his role as a selector for the national team, with the 2017 Rugby Leauge World Cup on the horizon.

This will make the upcoming State of Origin match on July 13 his last as a selector, and it’s one he and the Blues will no doubt be hoping to win after dropping the first two matches of the series.

They have a number of important decisions to make before the team is announced tomorrow with that goal in mind – the most prominent being whether or not to name James Tedesco.

The Wests Tigers fullback appears a likely inclusion after proving his form and fitness in recent weeks, but was overlooked for Game 2 selection despite appearing ready to go.

Now all we need is for Daley to follow him out the door

Almost the best team available. Let the haters hate mate. I'd probably swap J Morris for B J Lelua and B Morris only gets a run as T Turbo is under injury cloud. Having said that I have huge respect for both Morris boys and would have picked both for G3. They deserve to finish in SOO together.

His size and strength around the middle - wouldn't it be better utilized for 80 minutes than 20? Impact and x factor players are such BS. if they are so great they should be out there for as long as possible - i.e starting. Which is what Tedesco should be doing

We have genuine ball playing options in the backrow, if we were to play to our strengths you could use Graham and Cartwright as first receiver either side of the ruck for creativity and pick the best kicking options at our disposal in the halves. Tedesco running off an inside ball from Graham or a Cartwright offload screams success to me.

pick and stick? Moylan is only playing 1 as teddy was injured, no need to stay loyal. teddy should be given the 1 jersey as Moylan received it by default. long term teddy is the 1

Oh no, that's disappointing from a Qld perspective. He's been our last line of defence behind the super spine in origin for years.

Is Koroisau eligible? Lichaa and McInnes are young, hopefully they develop and give some much needed options at a troublesome position.

Looks like manly just lost their main source of tpas. Hopefully this will put an end to the cronyism.

I'll tell you a story. As a 12 year old in about 1972, I was playing for the school side at St Augustines College, which is literally across the road from Brookie Oval. We were having our Wednesday afternoon footy practice on the school oval ahead of the grand final we were to play against Narrabeen the following Saturday. Mid-practise, one of my team mate's dad drove up and Bob Fulton got out of the passenger seat and came over to join us. Bozo was in his prime as a player. He passed the ball to each of us a couple of times, had the forwards pack down down in a couple of scrums against him, and put down a couple of grubber kicks for us to gather up. He also showed us how to do his trade mark side step, and then had each of us try to get past him using it (and he let us all get past him). He then touched each of us on the head and said ' you can win'. It took about 20 minutes and then my mate's dad took him off. Well we could have beaten Paramatta at their home ground after that, and we gave the Narrabeen boys a shellacking on the Saturday.

exactly and by who?? NSWRL officials responsible for appointing Bozo/Loz etc and not having a mass overhaul after even 3 straight series losses. George Peponis, John Chalk.

Christmas in July for NSW. With Bozo gone NSW may possibly blood long overdue players. Having said that Bozo and Loz shouldn't take the blame for the pissweak decade. How about those in charge at the NSWRL who seem to get away with it? George Peponis and John Chalk are in charge and should take as much heat as Bozo and Loz. It all happened on their watch too. Basically just let Tedesco, Cartwright and Leilua on the field.....

3+ years is fair enough I suppose, though QLD have brought players in earlier often (Smith and Thurston both got their first QLD jumpers in their first season starting regularly) the current crop of QLD youngsters have at least one more year to wait; Smith, Cronk, and Thurston don't seem to be going anywhere next year unless they're injured. Even with Peats I'd say the NSW hooker ranks look shaky -- Peats is a solid first grader, but he hasn't exactly beaten the door down for a rep jumper.

True hooker is an issue too. Beyond Peats it is a little thin. No doubt there is plenty of information on individual players as soon as they hit the paddock. But there is still an element of surprise. And personally for the player, very little weight of expectation. Which all changes after a solid first year. I prefer to talk about halves in year 3+

I imagine Fulton had a pretty big hand in selecting G Murray & C Bellamy as head coaches for new south, while they were simultaneously contacted to win premierships with the same Thurston, Bowen, Smith, Inglis, Slater etc they were coaching against. That was where this run really started & I was as dumbfounded then when they made those decisions as I am now. Add to that leaving players like Hindmarsh out of the team, picking kurt gidley at fullback etc and if Bozo was a big hand in those decisions then he should have been shown the door 5 - 6 years ago.

Hooker would also be an area of concern for NSW, really haven't had a rep class hooker since Buderus and the current stocks are less than impressive. There's something to be said for young second year syndrome argument, but especially in the case of Ash Taylor there's no shortage of information on him out there and there's also nothing particularly unorthodox about his play -- he's more a sound fundamentals halfback who seems to stay very calm under pressure thus far.

Depth is only an issue in the halves. I have no idea why NSW have failed to develop these key positions after being spoilt with Joey Johns. But in the forwards and outside backs there are a plethora of quality options. Most still under 25. QLD certainly out point NSW in the halves. Having said that Elgey and Taylor are yet to play a full season each. And hence are yet to experience 2nd year syndrome where coaches have an entire off-season to lay out plans for them. I think a lot of the hype around them is based on the fact they have surprised to the upside after everyone thought the Titans would struggle. But right now they are no different to Brooks and Moses with the first year hype. Im more concerned about guys like Milford, DCE, Mbye et al.
