The future of NSW Origin

By bjvm / Roar Rookie

As a proud Queenslander, I have attempted to look into NSW’s Origin side in the years to come. It’s open to discussion, so leave a comment down below about any changes you’d make.

I’ve added a number of x-factors to the side including, James Tedesco, Jack Bird, Bryce Cartwright and Tyrone Peachey – who can all change the momentum of the game within seconds.

Tedesco with his speed, Bird with his all around skill, Cartwright as a ball playing forward with late offloads and Peachey who can make a line break anywhere on the field and can play in several positions. Having all these players on the field at the same time could prove to be a huge headache for the Queensland defensive line.

As for the risky decision of Matt Moylan in the halves, it worked in Origin 3 and Moylan will only improve as each year goes by. He plays a lot like a five-eighth in attack for Penrith every weekend. The only thing to improve in his game is obviously his front line defence, as he was targeted in game 3 and he let in a try to a rampaging Gavin Cooper.

Playing for Panthers, he makes correct decisions most of the time which makes me believe he can match it at the top level.

Playing Bryce Cartwright in the lock position gives him the go ahead to go wherever on the field and he can utilise his passing skills and late offloads to the sides full advantage.

Also being from Penrith, it will give the Blues some instant chemistry between players like Moylan, Josh Mansour, Peachey and Cartwright.

The forward pack in this side is a lot like the Queensland pack at the moment, only a couple big boppers and the others are built for long stints on the field and can all provide something different for the team whether it’s a sneaky offload or skilful passing. With the pace of the game amplified in Origin it is essential all players can keep up and have high stamina, which is why I’ve chosen the players I have.

As for the Fullback, either Josh Dugan or Tedesco can be the man for the job, however I think Dugan is better equipped for the wing compared to Teddy, which is why I put him out on the edge.

In the next few years both Queensland and NSW will have a lot of new faces in the Origin arena. As we all know, ten out of the last 11 series have fallen into Queensland ‘s lap – expect that to change.

I don’t believe there will be three or more years in a row where a state holds the shield. It’ll be an even playing field once the legendary Queensland players retire. However, there a lot of gun players waiting in the wings for an opportunity.

Naturally, I’m saying Queensland will still have a slight advantage over New South Wales, but there’s a lot to look forward to if you’re a Blues supporter.

2. Dugan

There's no players from the team I support in the side I put together.

Everyone on here keeps Tedesco at the back after a ok game. If he passed the ball we would have score 2 more tries. Moylan did ok and 5/8 but Reynolds is better and much better game manager. People keep picking players from their team cause they think they are good. The team i picked has a few holes but this team can play for 4 years, and start a winning culture and start a run of our own

I still think Dugan has a lot to offer. As a QLDer watching the Origin I was always a bit worried when Dugan got the ball.

First thing is to try and pick a long term spine. Queensland success is built on the consistency and strength of their 1, 6, 7 & 9 Tedesco is the long term fullback. Hopefully Moses and/or Brooks develop into the halves options, and I think they will over the next 18 months. The problem lies with the hooker. There's not one coming through that looks like he is a quality long term Origin player, like a Smith, Buderus, Walters, Elias, etc Boyd, Woods and Trobjevic are 3 of the 4 props. Jackson playing in the middle doing the workhorse role. No Klemmer And time to move on from the failed generation - Pearce, Jennings, Dugan, Morris, Morris, Farah, etc

Then it appears you've learnt nothing. Brett Morris is finished at Origin level, he's too old (30 in 5 weeks), had too many injuries and to be honest hasn't exactly set the world on fire in Origin. Time to move on and give youth a chance.

the Perth new stadium will be open in 2018 so why are they waiting till 2019 (when Qld are supposed to have 2 home games ) to take a game to Perth?? Are we scared NSW will still be chasing a series win??

I guess it will depend on early season form but I would think you need to get some of these new guys into the team.

Just waiting on the young fellas to mature. Martin looks the goods, maybe even Luke Brooks will be up to the challenge in coming years.

Going forward the NSW backline should be 1: Teddy/Moylan 2:T Trbojevic 3: J Moz Inglis bid his time on the wing while Bell played. Turbo to eventually move into the centres when MOZ moves on. 4:J Bird 5:L Mitchel this is the modern day Gidley-Tahu for you all NSW people 6: Maloney (M Moses to eventually replace him) 7;A Reynolds So by 2019 NSW should have a steady backline 1: Teddy 2:Anyone playing better (Mansour/Wighton/Tupou/French NRL might find new talent) 3:Trbojevic 4:Bird 5: Latrel Mitchel 6: Mitchel Moses 7:Adam Reynolds

Why do you assume that Hayne will pick up where he left off. He's been out of the game for a couple of years. It's not so easy seamlessly to slot straight back in and play like the Hayne of old.

Agreed about Moylan. I'm not sure he is the long term solution at 5/8 - especially with Te Maire Martin likely to play 5/8 for Penrith next year. Moylan did have an OK game in Origin 3, but most 5/8s would have gone OK with the amount of ball and field position NSW enjoyed in the match.

Would love to see either or both get a crack at SOO. We might get to see how Paulo goes on the big stage in the World Cup next year for Samoa.

I agree, watching NSW I thought there wasn't anyone really punishing in defence. Jake Trobjevic may provide some whack in defence. I think Nappa is going to provide that inspirational type of defence for Qld next year if he gets picked.

"Fairly" not easily, I'm laying a lot of faith in how Wallace has made the transition recently admittedly but something about the concept rings true for me (not that it should be a basis for selection).

It's early days eye but hasn't that been a great move so far. Never would have picked that one - well done Browny.

Mmmmm Koroisau is an interesting one. Before the weeken I would've been worried about his size but his defence was outstanding against the Warriors big men in the wknd.

Undoubtedly talented, for mine I would like to see him hold down a starting position in a team for a while. Three years, three clubs - yet to see him do it.

I hear ya TB. Tooves & The 8th immortal are unfair comparisons to Pearce. As Leviathan said he's probably more comparable to a Buderous and Pearce' experience will surely be an asset by now.
