Waratahs will not table offer to Hayne: Report

By News / Wire

The NSW Waratahs reportedly will not table a Super Rugby offer for code-hopping NRL star Jarryd Hayne.

According to foxsports.com.au, the Waratahs – after much consideration – have decided Hayne doesn’t fit in with their direction.

The decision, less than a week after Hayne held a second meeting with Australian Rugby Union boss Bill Pulver, means the former San Francisco 49ers’ NFL player and Fijian Olympic sevens aspirant will have to look outside Sydney if he remains intent on playing Super Rugby next season.

Waratahs chief executive Andrew Hore described the decision as a watershed moment in the franchise’s history.

“We’re not going to pursue Jarryd at this present point in time,” Hore told Fox Sports.

“We feel with the fact that we’ve combined both NSW and Waratahs rugby that our first priority has got to be making NSW a great rugby state again and that’s got to be our primary focus.

“Now, is a quick fix going to do that? We don’t think it is.

“We think the issues in our game are that broad and deep that we want to focus on resolving those and, when you’ve already got 10-plus Wallabies plus Israel Folau in our team, we feel that there’s enough star-power there at this stage,” Hore said.

“We believe we’ve got to focus more on those others areas of the game: youth development, infrastructure and building the game of rugby union for all shapes and sizes.”

“Now, there’s no doubt that if there was unlimited resources, that a player like Jarryd Hayne may have been of real benefit.

“But right now, we have a new and exciting young group of players, (and) combined with the needs of our game to put it back on an even keel, talking to Jarryd probably at the moment isn’t the right thing for us as a sport,” Hore said.

For sure. But for many players, and people in life generally, they have enough ability they just need the confidence to succeed. When your 9 foot 8, 20 stone of muscle and run like a fast thing, 55 tries probably delivered that confidence.

Hore is the CEO of NSWRU as well as the Waratahs. He is just saying that the priorities don't line up with paying big bucks to teach Hayne the game for two seasons before he has to move on as an international marquee. Eminently sensible decision.

Japan is easy - even the japanese forwards are not as big as nandolo :) i mean if richard kahui can survive in japan , then nandolo certainly can :P

He can make himself available for Fiji if he wants to play rugby.

He scored 55 tries in 50 Japan league games over 4 years and then was an "instant" success at the Crusaders. I reckon he turned the corner in Japan. I'm watching Volovola to see if the crusaders can make him into a good player. He has talent but lots of flaws. If they can make a star out of him I would be a belieber of their mythical powers. Or maybe like Nandolo he will mature and realise time is getting away from him.

Will say firstly...am not a TAHs fan by any stretch of the imagination. But if the reports are true, this is a great decision by Andrew Hore and the TAHs. For too long there has been a longing for a quick fix, and it is about time the NSWRU/TAHs focused on developing the game and players, and regaining the support of the grassroots. Well done TAHs!

ahh I'll re-write it for the dunces J Hayne Born in Sydney, never played a game of 15s Rugby in his life, played 5 minutes of 7s a few weeks ago and did nothing, dropped from Fiji 7s squad last job was in US Gridiron & was dropped from San Francisco squad. No-one else wanted him in USA. History of being a paid mercenary who has played 3 codes in the past 4 yrs with success in only 1 of them. Only the totally desperate and insane in Rugby would be interested in him imo. Penrith or Parramatta NRL is the best place for him - be gone young man :)

but the crusaders have a history of making something out of nothing - like nandolo for example. he was on the verge of exiting from rugger and trying another job , before the crusaders gig , he has said in an interview. in the same interview he said he was so grateful to the crusaders that he will never play for any other super team. onlything left to be seen is , if razor robertson can be as good as todd b in player development.

'I say let them stay in Europe and play or comeback and play for the WALLABIES for small match payments or nothing…' Simple fact that the Brumbies have an agreement to play at Canberra Stadium with the ACT Gov't

Ioane hasn't played a decent game in three years and must be close to 30 as well.

It means that he's not just responsible for a super rugby team, but responsible for rugby in an entire state. So he wants to put the needs of many ahead of the needs of a few. i.e. instead of thinking, 'let's spend our money on a player with a high profile that will get bums in seats' he's thinking 'how can I best spend that money to develop the game for the whole state, not just one team in the state' Previously the Waratahs and New South Wales Rugby operated independently of each other, but are now a consolidated entity.

“We feel with the fact that we’ve combined both NSW and Waratahs rugby.." What does that even mean?

dude , when he played for FIJI in 7s , he played himself out of being considered for any other country under the prevailing rules regarding eligibility. if knowing that , auzzy spent money on him , then those people shud be shot on their own shyt !!!

Which shows the Brumbies can't even hang onto players stolen from Qld in the first place

I'm not saying it's not. I actually despise the QRU for their business practices. You've not rated the total cost at $450 for what the players are actually receiving. You said they brought in $600k from the event, but after the cost of everything the players receive it's already $400k gone. Are there any staff that work at the event? How are they paid? So now the question is, is there any money left over from that $600k? I'm asking have you accounted for everything. I can see for example you haven't. The referee gets paid $30. What about the cost of insurance for the referees, the cost of whoever at what level administers the referees programs. Do refereeing courses actually cost what they participants are charged, or do they actually cost more, etc. This applies across the game at all levels. Smart Rugby has no charge for participants. But it costs money to actual put these on. It has to come from somewhere. Is this being used as a profit center? Or is this elite end helping prop up the lower end by covering costs for admin items which nobody thinks of. I don't know, but before we are finger pointing, lets ensure we are armed with the actual facts, not just what we want to believe.

Sorry TWAS the Juniors are already charged a QRU levy on top for Club. Then the Rep stuff costs extra. With Coaching apart from Smart Rugby which I think has no charge Level 2 is a considerable charge about $600ish My son Refs he get about $30 per game and the QRRA charges the QRU which forms part of the levy. however if we take the carnival that equated to less that $1 per player per game. 6 games in the carnival. A mate of mine is a rep coach and he does not get paid "Which he is fine with" and nor do any of the others. The Kit is pretty good Hat,Shorts, Socks, Training Shirt, Hoodie probably $150 worth. Although they did try to charge for the bag on top this year. Two nights accomm at TSS $200 and the fairest thing is flights for the country kids is included. I rate total cost across all kids probably $450 per child. Do't get me wrong the some of the people at the QRU are wonderful people who truly love there job and the game and should be commended but the development across all levels should not be a profit centre.

Considering that all the clubs are breaking even at best, they'd be wanting to play where they can take the most at the gate. That's your city centers. Playing in the regional centers would be fantastic, but it's simply a luxury that can't be afforded for competition games. Exhibition games and pre-season are pretty much always in regional centers though.
