Who cares what Jarryd Hayne does?

By John Macdonald / Roar Pro

The late literary critic Edmund Wilson wrote a famous essay in 1945 entitled ‘Who cares who killed Roger Ackroyd?’

In it, Wilson dismissed the mystery detective novel and its practitioners, such as Ackroyd’s Agatha Christie, Dorothy Sayers, Dashiel Hammett and Raymond Chandler.

While it’s true Jarryd Hayne is an infinitely greater figure than Christie, Chandler and their ilk, the question must be asked: ‘Who cares what Jarryd Hayne does?’

Certainly the Gold Coast Titans do, anticipating the on-field success he might bring – and, more importantly, the money he might bring and the profile he will give the club.

That’s the Hayne brand, to use the modern, fashionable term.

But non-Titans fans might think Hayne has branded himself as a joke.

When Hayne left Parramatta and the NRL to chase his dream of an American football career, he went with goodwill.

It seemed a romantic if doomed quest, but Hayne shocked everyone by making the final 53 with the San Francisco 49ers, a huge achievement.

There were mistakes and disappointments in his 2015 season, and limited understanding and absurd distortions from the Australian media, but Hayne showed enough to say he had a real future in the NFL if he persevered, did more hard yakka, and accepted the disappointments along the way.

Instead, in May Hayne announced he was leaving the NFL to try out for the Fijian Olympic rugby sevens team.

The sevens ambition was as big a shock as his original NFL ambition.

Had he jumped or was he pushed from the NFL? It doesn’t matter. If he was punted from San Francisco, he had other gridiron options to pursue.

If Hayne played sevens rugby fulltime, after six months he would be a sensation, but he expected to play for five minutes and go to the Olympics, jumping over
others who had devoted a career to go to Rio.

It was no shock when he didn’t make the cut.

Since then, the Hayne brand has been hawked around.

Rugby with the Waratahs? Rugby in France? Do an Eddie the Eagle and try ski-jumping? Skateboards? Marbles?

Hayne had promised hand on heart if he returned to the NRL, it would be to Parramatta.

Eels fans might think he had a moral obligation to join the club that had nurtured him since junior days, especially given their troubles.

Parramatta are a brand in need. Well, Hayne has now branded himself on his now-limited horizon.

What’s next? A charity boxing bout against Paul Gallen or Sonny Bill Williams?

Did you not see the initial interview with Ryan - he recognised straight away the Hayne episode for what it was- a distraction that had the potential to derail the Fijian campaign. And what do you form your thoughts on- some PR from the RL scribes who are hardly unbiased in their attempts to find a new idol for the shallow thinkers to latch onto. And being picked in a team despite not having played for 2 years & the first practice run only 3 days out- I cannot imagine that happening in any other professional sport- but never mind all the PR says Hayne is the super Star who can adapt immediately & reign supreme- just like he did in the NFL & Sevens. Anyway keep believing if it makes you happy

You haven't done any more "analysis"than anyone else here. You've formed an opinion based on what you've read or heard...don't try and pass that off as analysis. Ben Henry's happiest day of his life - is that some of your top class analysis or did you pull that out of your backside? I'm always ready for a good laugh when a post start off with "I'm smarter than you..." They're usually written by dingbats.

Probably not but he still had a go at something he'd never done before and that was a massive challenge. I think that's admirable and deserved more than being called a failure or money chaser.

People not having a go, love to have a crack at people who are having a go. I'm a proud Aussie but I can recognize the tall-poppy syndrome is one of our shortfalls.

Ken, as I say I may be biased. But I remember that during that early purple patch people like Phil Gould were touting him as the potential greatest ever player. The Daily Tele were pressing for him to take Slater's jersey. And you say in those years he was clearly the best player in the game. That is a matter of opinion, he was slotted in on the wing in the Aus side. I'm not denigrating him, you don't win Dally M if you are no good, but he would never have been first player picked in my side. And my point was the hype was always with him.

Yeah...Annesley did a massive double take at one stage when he said how much he wanted to be at Parra...

I think its a reflection of how dull quite a few peoples lives are and how dependant they have become on social media. Quite sad really.

'but I often felt the Hayne infatuation was because NSW league were in desperate need of a local hero' That's a puzzling view because I think for most of his career he wasn't really a mainstream hero. He was recognised as a guy that always lifted at state level but he was in and out of the Aussie team. He was even a bit of a polarising figure at the Eels. Of the players you mentioned the other NSWelshman, Inglis, is the one that's truly comparable in skillset. Incredibly dangerous runners with great ball-skills and a reputation for not always giving 100%. At his best, see 2009 & 2014, he was clearly the best player in the game. The difference with Smith, JT & Slater is that those guys were consistently within the Top 5 players year after year for a decade (Slater's last couple aside) where Hayne would fall way down the list when he wasn't on.

It was a strange one, you could see the Titan's officials faces slowly colouring as the man they are paying 1.2m a year spent his time earnestly telling everyone how sad he is that he wasn't at Parramatta. Still, at least that means it was probably his truthful thoughts rather than meaningless stage-managed soundbites and that has to count for something. He probably could have pretended to be a little more excited about this latest chapter though. Acknowledging the above, and his reputation at Parra for being half-hearted, I see why people are believing they are going to get patchy performances from Hayne. I actually suspect the opposite is true though - there are phases in life where we float around and don't make much progress, then wham, we gain a certain experience, skill or viewpoint and we jump to a new level. Hayne may take a while to settle back into the game and a new team but I reckon he's probably a different guy to the one that left and that effort won't be an issue.

The BRAND, the BRAND- people scoff at the term but judging by some of the posts above it is so easy to sucker in those with little ability to analyse. No matter the press conference was lack lustre & verging on a disaster. Either the Fiji Sevens episode was a PR stunt or a moment of monumental egotistical behaviour but the chances of success were always near zero. Poor Ben Ryan- having built Fiji into a world dominant force had then to deal with the distraction of Hayne. I can only imagine the politics behind the sorry episode but Ryan's happiest day would have been when he cut Hayne from the squad- a total distraction to Fiji's preparation.. So back to OZ where Hayne is hawked from pillar to post. Bill Pulver managed to embarrass himself & the ARU until commonsense from the Waratahs put that sideshow to bed. Then "the lifelong pledge to Parra"- OH! some more shiny dollars on offer in Glitter land. And I do not deny Hayne the right to maximise his income-but please less of the BS and the total disrespect for others-be it the Fijian Country on their quest to earn their country's first Olympic Gold or his "lifelong NRL Club". Never mind though- a bit of PR and propaganda & the gullible will be back on board. And looks like straight into Titan's team despite not having played for 2 years & 1st practice only 3 days out. Yeah Right-total respect for those players who have put Titans back on the map this season.

However, these days it seems a reputation in one sport can get you a start in the top level of another sport with similar skills, at least. Marketing..... It is not as though it is golf and wrestling and tennis. That would be real independent reinforcement of your point, Baz! Folau and Hunt also played at the top level in three football codes. Plenty played top level league and union. I feel marketing was even a factor in Hayne's NFL foray, too. Maybe I am biased, but I often felt the Hayne infatuation was because NSW league were in desperate need of a local hero. IMO he is one rung down from the likes of Slater, JT, Inglis, Smith.

Hayne looked very half hearted at his press conference yesterday. Spent more time trying to justify why he had no choice but to sign for the Titans instead of Parramatta. I reckon you'll see some very patchy performances from a guy whose heart won't be in it.The guy is searching for something and he doesn't quite know what it is (like a lot of us).
