Yvonne Sampson is the shining light of brilliant Women in League

By David Lord / Expert

This year Yvonne Sampson became the first women to host rugby league’s Holy Grail – the State of Origin series.

Since it’s inauguration in 1982, Origin television coverage has been male dominated.

But Sampson was an inspired selection with her knowledge, passion and easy-going interviewing style lifting Channel Nine’s Origin panel of Wally Lewis, Brad Fittler, Darren Lockyer, Paul Vautin, and Andrew Johns.

Better known as “Vonnie”, she’s highly-respected by such an illustrious panel, a positive indication her appointment was right on the money.

This Women in League round in the NRL is recognition of how big a part women play in the 13-man code – and it keeps getting bigger.

Turn the clock back to the 1980s, where women in any form of rugby league were as scarce as hen’s teeth.

Rebecca Wilson, Debbie Spillane, and Tracey Holmes were the trail-blazers.

Wilson started in 1984 at Channel 10 in Brisbane to become media manager of Super League and currently writes a full-page column on any sport in Saturday’s Daily Telegraph where rugby league is the centre of attention, and is a regular panellist on Sky’s Sportsline late evening program – always a top performer.

Spillane became the first female to sideline eye the ABC’s live radio coverage in 1984, before becoming the media manager of the Bulldogs. Quite often feisty during her long career, she has retired.

Holmes was the first female to host a national sports program in 1989 with the ABC’s Grandstand. She has always been highly respected in sporting circles and these days is an ABC NewsRadio morning host.

In 2004, Katie Page, Harvey Norman’s CEO, became the first NRL Board member. There are now 13 women on the board’s of the 16 rugby league clubs.

And today there’s a growing list of very talented women sportscasters.

Erin Molan and Danika Mason are on Channel Nine, Lara Pitt, Megan Barnard and Kelli Underwood on Fox, with Mel McLaughlin on Seven

Molan has been a regular on rugby league’s weekly Footy Show, and this year hosted a new rugby league program The Rookies.

Mason is a regular member of Nine News sport, with rugby league interviews that are always high quality..

Pitt is a regular on Fox’s rugby league coverage, appearing on Matty John’s excellent programmes, and interviewing before and after NRL games.

Barnard appears on the Johns programs with rugby league updates with her passion for rugby league clearly evident, while Underwood is a highly-respected regular on Fox’s Back Page.

But Channel 10 made a major blunder demoting McLaughlin to a lesser role in the Big Bash League, and paid the penalty with McLaughlin heading off to Channel Seven where she is now a high-profile presenter in the station’s live coverage of the Rio Olympics.

Roarers will be surprised to learn there are around 450,000 women directly associated with rugby league as commentators, administrators, employees, coaches, volunteers, and fully-paid members of rugby league clubs.

In that number are the 180,000 women who play rugby league.

Little wonder Women in League has become a powerful arm of the code.

Peter appreciate your response.I used an analogy to give an example.I accept it may not be the best example.Life experience sometimes helps. as i have found. .My point is if someone be it relative or parent is there to offer support because they have the experience, that has got to be a plus.Women playing league tag now and parents in the future is such and example. When dealing with our erstwhile mate who now and again tries to stir the pot,I decided to spell our in detail the reasons for the big jump. You say something is black ,he will maintain its white. League tag and tackle on one side League tag killing it re numbers for women. That's all i was trying to get through. And touch on the other hand It was pointed out by a female player that mothers might feel more inclined to let their girls play League tag, if they themselves played. Of course you can put your house on it,should rl participation numbers be mentioned,or crowds or Internationals, the usual knockers roll in.

Um okay it certainly wasn’t clear that it was a quote that you then extended with the addition of the multiplier effect. I still don’t see any basis for why we make the leap in logic to the finding that a material number of these mums go from not wanting their kids to play to suddenly putting their hand up and saying I’ll give it a crack and then changing their mind with regards to the kids. And whilst I enjoyed the little sojourn into your childhood is that really a similar situation. The example would have more merit (well as much as one piece of anecdotal evidence does) if mumma CC had never body surfed and had been forbidding little CC from doing it but then suddenly one day went and had a bit of a crack with a big wave and decided it was okay for little CC from now on.

It may pay you to spend a little time checking the difference between the rules of League tag and Touch, before breaking into an anti rl lather.

Um i f you have X number of female players involved in tackle and league tag at a certain date and you have a far higher Xplus number at another date a couple of years later, and you show with just a couple of samples and there are a stack more on the web in various league tag comps, where the growth starts and continues you may get the message. EG Another Scone Advocate under the heading League tag is booming Another form The Central western Daily May 2016 "Come and try night sparks interest in league"has resulted in Orange CYMS and Bloomfield Tigers having their first girls' league tag season with mini, mod and International aged teams for the inaugural season The comment "we had huge numbers which was pleasing CVYMS rep Chrisite Westacott Kiama independent 2016 "In a league of their own. Kiama Women's League tag kicked off in 2010 we had 3 teams ,this year its 12. A Northern Territory womens Tackle rl team will be represented at the affiliated states championship from 4th -8th June this year for the first time. It doesn;t take a genius to do a bit of research into how numbers have jumped dramatically. This has been happening more so in Queensland and indeed Nthn NSW,Newcastle, western slopes and plains.Danny can do that . League tag(growing above expectations) is included in the RL figures FFS ,which I stated at the very first instant. The reason for the huge jump.Touch is touch not league tag.It is shown separately by the NRL.Touch was taken over by the NRL a couple of years ago.League tag is a different baby. Yes i know keyboard trolls cannot handle facts and figures,so they resort for their puerile defence, as " someone ranting " with media support which they don't like .The very same who spent little time if any in their life attending rl games, having relatives involved playing at senior level, but who know the demographics of rl fans But certainly spend time on NRL threads only when they want inject cynicism(not constructive) for no other reason than to make an attempt to point score. The very reason I don't go on AFL threads is for the very reason ,my knowledge is limited about that sport.Perhaps there is a lesson for you.

None of that answers Danny's contention that the figures just don't add up - the second is about tag, which is not included in the league figures and the first is just a long winded rant.

The CC VP Cameron Anderson said it was a huge step forward for the development of women's rl in the area.It all happened fairly quickly. We had a meeting about 3 months ago and as well as the 1st grade side we added u14 and u16s teams. The girls started coming in droves. It has become so popular the girls now have a pathway to 1st grade if they want. The Sharks will play in the Sydney Women's Metro Comp, this season which starts with an away game against Berkeley Vale Panthers on Apr 9.Redfern ABs ,Penrith Waratahs ,Hunter Stars ,Greenacre Tigers,Forestville Ferettes and Mounties will be the CC opposition." Not my observations Clipper. 1) Yvette Croft was a 1st aider, supporter, manager, secretary, fundraiser, treasurer and life Member of the Tuggeranong Buffaloes she cited the numbers ,and women now wanting to take up the tackling side. in her club, 2) The Sharks junior club female development is well publicise in the local Shire media and mentioned again on game day,as is the growth of the female game.Ruan Simms has stated such herself(A Jillaroo) 3) Re your comments shows you just enter NRL threads when it suits, To suggest I have never put league in a negative light is TBH plain BS.See below. 4) RL was out of the curriculum a year or so ago,for over 12s .That has been lifted. 5) I do know male numbers are down in the Shire for over 12s Go ahead and dispute the above. I have slated the code in the,Gallop for his insular approach to Govt past for lack of expansion, the problems in the bush.,the poor TV deals on the last 2 occasions, the scheduling, the admin of the Sharks,ASADA In fact I have stated I am in awe of the AFL crowds. I have been following elk before you were born, and have seen many highs and indeed lows. I do not venture onto AFL sites to attempt as you do to desperately look for negatives in your code and boy there are some. I do know when the hint of any growth is mentioned about rl,you cannot help yourself leading the charge to make your usual ignorant generalisations.Your dislike for rl is legendary on these threads. All Danny(and he has indeed a genuine question) has to do is write to the NRL admin, contact the NSWRL.or various clubs ,which I what I suggested. Yeah sure re Wikipedia, you bagged rl people for using that as a basis in the past, yet you were quite happy to quote the,I take your views with a grain of salt. This is not a Wikipedia comment by people at the coalface who have a better idea than a trolling expert.

I think quoting Wikipedia is a better option than relying on 'just my observations' from someone who would never put league in a negative light. Danny is quite correct in saying the figures just don't add up - I think they must've had a word with the AFL guys who did the participation numbers for the Birchgrove saga!

Peter.I am just quoting a comment by the women involved in the Canberra club about the effect of girls playing down the line. it's pretty hard to gauge any multiplier effect ,in the early stages.Bear in mind girls playing rugby league now grow up to be women, and I know league mothers who were worried about little Billy playing rl.So they choose soccer and the vast majority probably will still. The fact girls now play ,has "softened" the effect somewhat. By experiencing it themselves the mothers would be better placed to make a choice . My wording "multiplier effect" not hers.Though some mothers involved in rl committees ,volunteers etc ,now letting their girls play. As I stated playing rl for over 12s is now allowed ,it wasn't the case prior. The Jillaroos have also provided decent publicity and promotion. One in the Sutherland Shire is a school teacher. I used to have a genuine fear of tackling decent waves as kid, until a cousin of mine taught me how to s body urf and handle dumpers.Whilst I still have respect,my fear was lessened somewhat .I still get dumped BTW.

Are we sure the “multiplier effect” is exists in any material form though? Without any evidence of it existing I’d have thought it was just as plausible to assume the women that would choose to play league as adults would be from “rugby league” families and already happy for their kids to play the game. I’m not sure we can logically assume there are a material number of women playing who would previously not have let their kids play? You’d think the same factors ruling it out for their kids would have ruled it out for them.

Another point brought up,which I thought interesting.,The more females playing rugby league in whatever form, the better chance of their young sons more so and their daughters being permitted to play the tackle version. The multiplier effect. The NRL has not ruled out a national womens rugby league comp in the future, and that's not the long distant future.

Danny this is 2016 a lot has happened since just from my observations. In 2015 female participation increased by 27% ,that figure has jumped considerably this year. The Cronulla Junior rl club started up a female side of their club, with specific female only players involving tackle. One or two of the Jillaroos is playing for their senior club.I have seen for myself the number of your girls playing at 1/2 time in League tag Sharks matches, and indeed some playing with the boys in tackle. A womens 2nd division in Sydney and the first ever tackle 13-15 yo and 16 -18yo girls comp in sydney this year. Going from zero in the space of a year .Apparently there is a decent demand for female tackle.Girls a year ago were not allowed to play tackle after 12 years, that has been rescinded. For example Canberra the Tuggeranong Bufflaloes have started recently a female league tag, that has jumped from 5-11 teams in at the space of 12 months. Now the older women, the mothers want to play tackle. This year there is a Qld 14 yo statewide tackle carnival for females. The number of women playing rl is 180,000 (not touch football)That would include league tag,and schools and no doubt carnivals..The 180,000 are not regular club players obviously. The number of touch football players clearly spelt out is 302,400 for girls and women. They are the official figures. My elder daughter played mixed touch quite a few years ago,and even then some girls wanted to try tackle ,which was not available. There was a two page spread in the Telegraph last Sunday on the participation of females in rugby league. .Disputing them is yours and my democratic choice. The NRL official site also cites those figures. Just like official figures provided by all the football codes, netball. Now I also suggest if the code did what another code did in Glebe ,they would get caught out .The figures need to be provided from a insurance perspective, reliable for referee availability, for Govt and council ground allocations and assistance. But I also suggest perhaps a lot more reliable than Clipper's reliance on Wikipedia for AFL participation in Europe. I cannot do any more than provide the info as above. If you are still not satisfied ,write to the NRL for substantiation. The fact girls play now rugby league in whatever form, in such increasing numbers ,goes against the predictable argument by some of the code's competitors that rl is such a brutal"thuggish" sport contact " thuggish " sport

In the 2014 NRL report it says in the "Participation & Community --- Growing At The Grassroots" section.... 695,719 playing in weekend and school based competitions I very much doubt that 180,000 of those participants, ie one in four players, are girls. I have not seen one junior team with one third (in the youngest age groups) or one quarter (in the older age groups) of their players. Sure, there might be some teams with those numbers but your figures are saying every team has 1/3 or 1/4 of them made up of girls. The figures just don't stack up. Where are you getting the number 180,000? Again, not trying to pick an argument, just curious as to how this number comes about based on my observations of being a parent/coach for the last nine years and seeing a miniscule amount of girls playing.

Danny I'll spell it out ,and it's not what Clipper wants to read. 180,000 girls and women playing rugby league across Australia 302,400 girls and women playing touch football nationally. Hence the figure the code states almost 500,000 playing the game nationally. Rugby league is the fastest growing area of the sport. You know the one with the" demographics " we get thrown at us.

Good question, Danny - it's like the AFL claiming figures including Auskick or TA claiming figures for Table Tennis.
