Waratahs sign Sevens star Cameron Clark

By Connor Bennett / Editor

The Waratahs have announced the signing of Australian Rugby Sevens star Cameron Clark, picking up the Olympian till the end of the 2018 season.

Clark is fresh off the Rio Olympics where the Australians were bundled out in the quarter-finals, but he’s done plenty to impress Waratahs coach Daryl Gibson, who showed great excitement in bringing him over to the 15-man game.

“Cam has had a hugely successful career in Sevens already. He looks a dangerous and threatening player with ball in hand so I’m looking forward to working with him,” Gibson said.

Clark has twice won the Australian sevens player of the year award, as well as being named in the world team of the year in 2014, all at the young age of 23.

Born in New Zealand, Clark has already represented his adopted country at schoolboy level in 15-a-side, before finding success at Sevens in the last four years.

“He’s looking for a challenge back in 15s and will no doubt add to the competition for spots next season” said Gibson.

He will get his feet wet before the 2017 Super Rugby season though, being named in the Sydney Rays’ line-up for the upcoming NRC competition, in an effort to reacquaint him with the format.

Clark will be a boost to a Waratahs side looking to make their way back into the finals race after a disappointing end to 2015.

To be more precise I should have said I see great potential in him. Was only 19 so is the one I'd be looking at to make it in time.

easiest position for a not so big guy from 7S is to play scrum half. there was a suggestion from one south african former coach , that Kolby shud play scrum half for boks. he is a full back usually.

Nah he's an issue defensively still. I'm sure he will improve but he's got a bit to come yet.

He will put more size on now he doesn't haven't to be conditioned for 7s. I'd expect him to play wing or fullback, 13 if injuries require

Nick Phipps switched from 7s post Delhi Comm Games. It took him one season to make an EOYT and was selected for the 2011 RWC in short order. These blokes should be equally as successful.

Could be a very interesting signing. Don't think he's lacking too badly in size and would suggest he plays above his weight. Certainly his ability to run a good line and break tackles has been a highlight of his play in 7s so will be interesting to see this translate.

The one the Super Rugby teams should be after is Henry Hutchison. That kid is awesome.

Looks to have some speed and a good drop kick, but not much size to him. Likely to be an outside back or closer to the play making?
