Roar Forum: What changes should the Wallabies make for the second Test?

By The Roar / Editor

Well, that wasn’t much fun, eh Wallabies fans? A 42-8 smashing in the the first game of the Bledisloe Cup has left us all a bit down this morning. Really, that’s an understatement at this point.

More of the wash-up from Bledisloe 1
» Match Report: NZ smash Australia
» LORD: The Wallabies can’t pass, catch or tackle
» Five talking points

» WATCH: All the highlights

The result is even worse when you consider that it means we’ve now lost four consecutive Test on home soil, three of them to England earlier in the year and now one to the All Blacks.

While a win against the world’s premier nation was always a little unlikely even on our home turf, the manner of the defeat – a complete capitulation to lose by 34 points – was frankly embarrassing.

And to think this comes after a 2015 in which Australia won the Rugby Championship, finished as runners-up in the Rugby World Cup, and saw Michael Cheika named Coach of the Year.

It’s pretty clear at this point that the Wallabies need to make some changes. But what changes, exactly? For the answer to that all important question, Roarers, we’re turning things over to you.

What changes need to be made ahead of the second Test agaisnt the All Blacks? Who fared well last night, who flopped? Who deserves another chance, and whose time is up? Who are Australia’s best options waiting in the wings? In short: who comes in, who goes out?

There will, we bet, be a variety of opinions on the matter, and in this week’s Roar Forum you are invited to let us know in the comments what yours is.

For your reference, here’s the full team from last night:

Wallabies team to play the All Blacks in Bledisloe 1
1. Scott Sio, 2. Stephen Moore, 3. Sekope Kepu, 4. Kane Douglas, 5. Rob Simmons, 6. Ben McCalman, 7. Michael Hooper, 8. David Pocock, 9. Will Geni, 10. Bernard Foley, 11. Dane Haylett-Petty, 12. Matt Giteau, 13. Tevita Kuridrani, 14. Adam Ashley-Coope, 15. Israel Folau.

Reserves: 16. Tatafu Polota-Nau, 17. James Slipper, 18. Allan Ala’alatoa, 19. Dean Mumm, 20. Scott Fardy, 21. Nick Phipp, 22. Matt Toomua, 23. Rob Horne.

What changes do you want to see for next week? Let the debate begin!

Wellington Test 2...Deckchair rearrangement on the Titanic? I hope for Q.C's sake he has a blinder and I hope he has learned to tackle like les Johns and Pat Howard.. How B.F is still there even outside of Quade, is unfathomable. He will be steam-rolled there no matter how brave he may be. Also Mr Moore needed benching as well unfortunately and the courageous but senseless rush and bash of Fardy and co is not working and won't against those Kiwis. Not ever. They need two more Melbourne Rebels forwards (Timani and Jones and ) and their halfback. And someone...even a Brownlow medallist if necessary, who can kick accurately ever time. Skelton should be brought on for a full 60 minutes and he should try to really prove what he is capable of, which could be a game changer.. The All Blacks know every moved the Wallas will make. They know where the ball will be kicked and how badly, by whom, and when, and they know to kick where the Wallas won't be. How come we don't know that? They know the forward smash and bash was the creative equivalent of the WW1 tactics of the Generals on the Western Front, but unfortunately the Wallas don't have endless troops in reserve as those terrible unfortunates of the "great" War did.. Has the coach actually re watched the game? Judging by his run on Team for Wellington I'm starting to think the answer's "no". May I suggest he start praying to the Gods and grand panjandrums of all major world religions. As of Yesterday But then again N. Grey said the defense was easily fixable. They might think about him being Donny Trump's new chief of ops with those kinds of skills. Watch that Wellington green space! Predicted Cheik quotes post Wellington: "I'm actually thinking of possibly bringing Israel in to the centres for game 3"; And "A 23 point loss to the ABs is a big improvement for us" ; and "I'm thinking of bringing Michae Lynagh back to just do the goal kicking."

I tend to agree with most of Harry's team but is it a case of we just don't have the talent to compete with the big boys. Don't be supprised if you see Foley and Hooper back in as both seem to be endangered species and being Waratahs seems to be a huge advantage, by saying that you don't have to be the best player in your position as long as the coaching staff likes you.

They need to clear out those who are no longer up to it after this Rugby Championship. I'm looking to a future starting 15 side like this : 1. Scott Sio 2. Andrew Ready 3. Allan Alaalatoa 4. Adam Coleman 5. Rory Arnold 6. Sean McMahon 7. David Pocock (c) 8. Lopeti Timani 9. Nick Frisby 10. Quade Cooper 11. Marika Koroibete 12. Samu Kerevi 13. Israel Folau 14. Sefanaia Naivalu 15. DHP Others on bench or in the mix at least: Hanson, Robertson, Hooper, Stirzaker, Godwin, Hodge, Kellaway, Morahan

Play Folou in the centres. He is always out of position as full-back. Did he make any last-ditch tackles? Not any that I can recall. He was often 10 meters away from an AB try. They do not need a WB fullback to wave them through to the tryline - they know how to get there unassisted.

Every one of these players would dominate Shute Shield. How would it being stronger help?

How does having less people exposed in environments that make their job easier help the Wallabies?

He beats them because wider there is more space. Closer to the middle Folau would have less space to beat them.

Why the surprise ? The wallabies mirrored our super results. It Was on e of the most pathetic displays I have seen in 30 years. Can't catch can't run can't pass -& now can't tackle. I fear we just do not seem to be producing quality young players, and Giteaus law won't work for us. It's a restructure in the admin we need. To hearvCheika say he preparedrhem wrongly. Is unbelievable !! A highly Experianced combative coach at that To hear Nathan Grey say it's easily fixed- he is the defence coach and they should both be sacked for those defeatist comments

its something that is done reasonably commonly now tman and not limited to sports. dont know for sure but itd be pretty unusual for it not to have started in full consultation with the indigenous community. went to a wedding the other day and they did it. mind you we were in a park area in darwin so maybe there was additional significance of the land.

Strange to blame (partially) Phipps when he spent the night on the wing. Didn't see him fail in the basics. NZ 1st try from Giteau failing to find touch from near own goal line. 2nd try from tight head and 3rd from charge down. Schoolboy teams would be gutted by such tripe. Anyway, can't sack them all. Every spot up for grabs but I'm going with 1. Sio 2. TPN 3. Kepu 4. Mumm 5. Douglas 6. Fardy 7. Pocock 8. McCalman/Jones (Holloway if fit) 9. Phipps 10. Foley 11. AAC 12. Hooper 13. Folau 14. Mitchell 15. DHP. QC a disaster - always has been and always will be against NZ.

Phipps cannot pass. As a scrumhalf, Phipps makes a good winger.

Moore was really hard to watch on Saturday night, he was very slow and not making much impact at all. I think he has had his day.

The ABs arrived in Sydney saying they would focus on Attitude. For every team that has a different meaning. At half time Sam Whitelock told Smithy on Sky, it was about getting the front loading right, while Adam Ashley-Cooper told Kaff , "we're just not relieving pressure and we need to be more disciplined and control our own tempo ". One is about an attitude in terms of a united cohesion where the game plan and culture has become subconscious, allowing an expansive, offloading running game. The other attitude seemed to be distressed and uncertain and on the back foot at every turn. From virtually a 4 week camp the Wallabies , players, coaches and commentators alike, were saying all week that this was the time when the silverware would become ours. Sadly it will take a bit more than just a good old bit of Ra Ra to beat the ABs. Its a culture thing. STOP talking of WINNING. Like winning is all that counts. The Silverware has to be earned. I grew up where a parent or teacher would say how did you PLAY, if they weren't watching. Not did you WIN. Basically we were taught that if you play well and your mates play well, then you may win. Big deal. A win was nice, but how you played the game was more important. And play the whistle, and never backchat the Ref. Then once you progressed to Representative level, yes wins were expected, but you soon found your feet and the pecking order, so you went away with some work-on tasks. It took desire and a love of the game to improve. Today Australian culture is hell bent on winning, and winning is good, but if its a shaky win and not a win made from a strong core of elite players with great skills, well coached with an exciting evolving game plan, then the wins will be short lived and few and far between. It will be interesting if the Wallabies can regroup and whether they choose to play a more one dimensional game, play a tight front five, plus another line-out jumper at 8 and commit more ABs to the breakdown, stick to it and stop the bleeding, or take them on at their own game at their peril....
