Hasler is now just a hassle

By The Boss / Roar Guru

Sunday afternoon’s 28-12 loss to Penrith made it apparent that the way the Bulldogs play cannot win a premiership.

The problems start with their spine.

William Hoppate is centre who filled in well at fullback, he is very safe, good positionally and smart, but he slow and not particularly good at ball playing.

Josh Reynolds and Moses Mbye are both five-eighths, and both have average kicking games.

Mbye is very talented, but never has enough ball. There a sets deep in the opposition half where he won’t even touch the ball, and when he does it is a predictable pass to a foward. Mbye showed his skills with the first try of the afternoon on Sunday that’s what he do when he runs the ball.

Still, Canterubry desperately need a halfback who can lead are team around the park and give them direction in attack.

As for Michael Lichaa, he just passes the ball from dummy half, posing zero danger to any opposition.

I am not blaming the players though – they really look like they are trying, but they are set up to fail.

The blame must fall directly on Des Hasler.

Des has failed to change following the success of 2012, when they made the grand final. The problem is the rest of the NRL have caught up, and Ben Barba was one one of the reasons why Bulldogs were successful in 2012, but he is no longer at the club.

The dilemma at hand is probably going to get worse, with no key signings, or rookie players to get excited about. Their defence and toughness will probably be enough for them to make eight in 2017, but they need a change of indentity – and that starts from the top, or you will see the same old recycled play.

While he has made finals in every year, and two grand finals in five years, Des has to go.

THing is, the Dogs have been makign the semi's every year under Des's watch. 2 Grand Finals apperances. So there is a lot to like. Our problem at the moment is a hooker who must be one of the worst going around. No vision whatsoever. I would address that by moving Mbye to hooker, so we have that speed around the ruck, and better service from dummy half, plus a kicking game that will take the pressure off the halves when required. So that leaves a half back to find. Not sure how we fill that role. Maybe we do go after Sam Williams, or look to the Superleague for a halfback who wants to chance his hand in the NRL. Couldn't go too bad behind this set of forwards really. Just needs a great kickign game, mainly distance cause we need to stop having teams starting at there 30m line. Lastly a fullback. I like Hoppa, but he is the same as Perrett at Fullback. Safe, dependable, but no game breaker. And with the team the Dogs have, we need a fullback who can be a playmaker, and has some great speed. Maybe that guy from the Warriors who seems to be getting shafted from getting a position. Don't forget we will have a new right side centre/wing combo next year (Brenko Lee and hopefully Idris). So fixing 3 positions should see us really change our style of play cause Mbye will ensure the halves get the ball when they need it, as well as being able to take advantage of quick play the balls, and he is an excellent support player. I'm fine with the team. Just needs some minor adjustments. It's not like Des had this style at Manly. He is getting the best out of what he has currently. He can't be faulted for Mbye not becoming a half back when he is really a 5/8th.

I've heard that the Dogs have recently signed Luciano Leilua - seems to have potential, but he's seems to be another in the Kasiano, Eastwood, Williams, Graham mould. Big guys with good hands - this must be Hasler's preference, but is it a viable way to go when you consider the pace of the game, the level of fitness required and how vulnerable you leave yourself to smaller and more mobile packs. Des is obsessed with completion rates - the reason is because he knows that if the Dogs don't maintain a high level of possession, his forward pack runs out of gas. You end up having players like Jackson, Tolman and Licha having to make a bazillion tackles - the whole thing is unbalanced....

And as far as a goal kicker, Holland seemed ok, but struggled to stay in the top grade. He needs to add something else to his game.

When Ennis was let go, he was giving (or was targeted for) too many penalties. Hodgo never involves himself enough, still doesn't. They need speed. Lots of it. The Morris twins are reaching that stage of being eternally injured, thus hampered. Not doubting their courage, but they're less effective. Its what happens to fast backs as they age. Maybe Josh Morris needs to bulk up a bit and slot into the back row.

Albo you are completely right, but they did have creativity with Ennis and Hodkinson, both of these guys played SOO and for the life of me I cannot understand why they let them go? Hodkinson was a great goal kicker for them (which they have missed this season and they lost allot of points because of not having a good goal kicker) and then Ennis (who is a hard competitor and a genius around the ruck) who has made the Sharks the team that they are this season (e.g. their last game against the Raiders). For me Mbye hasn't had a great impact and a very good season and Reynolds has been doing too many things on his own, this was to create and to do some outstanding things for the Dogs attack, which was really why the Dogs were in the 8. While Will Hopoate was a very strange signing when the Dogs knew that his religious limits would restrict him from playing. There are allot of things that Des has to do for the Dogs to be a GF threat, 2017 will be a season where the Dogs will have to prove that making the 8 is just not good enough, they have to go further and not be a lay down misere as just another top 8 team. But from what I've seen this season that is very unlikely to happen.

I just think that the Dogs style of play is such a tough style of attrition that impacts not only on the opposition but more so on themselves. They have to belt their bodies in this forward focused battle every week. As the opposition teams have worked out their single style approach these past couple of years, this attrition has effected the Dogs bodies more than ever. They were gone (physically) after 30 minutes against the Panthers on Sunday despite having a good percentage of the ball, and a second half blitz was always on the cards. The Panthers deliberate ploy to run them around and take the 6th tackle rather than kick gave the big Dogs forwards no respite. So who do you blame for this lack of a Plan B when their main strategy isn't working ? You can't blame the players for not trying . You can't tell me hi calibre guys like Josh Jackson, James Graham, Josh Reynolds, the Morris twins & Moses Mbye aren't giving their best every week ? It has to be the coach and the administration that must bear the flak for sticking with a limited and sameness of roster now for a few years. They have few creative players but for the 10 minutes per game from Sam Kasiano , or the odd Josh Reynolds kick & chase . They surely need some more creativity and if they don't have it locally they need to go to market for it. So Des is probably coaching to his limited roster, but why is this roster so limited ? Des surely has had a major say in the recruitment of players to the club ? Maybe Des and the Club have finally realised this and have pinched the younger Leilua kid from St George for next year, and he has plenty of creativity in his game. Another strange decision by St. George letting another good one go yet again ?

Don't blame Des Hasler Boss its the players and as he hinted at half time in this finals game, these guys have no ticker and go. That is the Dogs biggest problem, plus they neeed new roster to be competitive and win the GF.

I'm getting sick of these articles. Before you criticise our play (which is warranted) watch us play more than 1 game. Mbye never gets the ball. How is it that he only passes to a forward when he only ever plays with a centre and a winger outside of him. I think dudes just love seeing their names on the home page
