Dan Carter at the centre of French rugby doping scandal

By The Roar / Editor

Former All Blacks superstar Dan Carter is one of three Racing 92 players who have allegedly tested positive for using corticosteroids, according to a newspaper report in France.

French paper L’Equipe named Carter, fellow former All Black Joe Rokocoko and Argentinian outside back Juan Imhoff in their report, claiming the trio failed a urine test after their Top 14 final against Toulon on June 25.

According to the report, “the first analytical results have detected abnormalities in the urine of three players of Racing”.

The article also reported that none of Carter, Rokocoko and Imhoff had a therapeutic use exemption (TUE), which would have provided the trio with a legitimate medical excuse for having the banned substance in their systems.

However Simon Porter, Carter’s and Rokocoko’s player manager, hit back at the report, claiming that TUEs had been organised for both of the former All Blacks.

“We have been aware of the issue for a few weeks,” Porter told the New Zealand Herald.

“Our understanding and assurances we’ve had are all the documents around TUEs were in place.”

Carter produced a man-of-the-match display for Racing during their 29-21 win over Toulon in the final, while Rokocoko also put in an impressive display, scoring a chip-and-chase try in the first half.

Both players had been recovering from injuries in the lead-up to the game. Porter said Carter had been taking medication to overcome a calf injury which he had been battling for the months in the lead-up to the final, while Rokocoko had been dealing with a knee injury.

Carter is the all-time leading scorer in international rugby, having racked up 1598 points for New Zealand during his 112-Test career which came to an end after last year’s successful Rugby World Cup campaign.

Rokocoko also enjoyed a prolific Test career, scoring 46 tries for the All Blacks between 2003 and 2010.

Not sure theres anything to defend Carlos. It was all within the rules and sanctioned by the UCI. Don't think there is any chance of stripping Wiggins of the 2012 TDF and awarding it to the second place rider Froome, who deserved to win the race. I've noticed that there are several hundred names on the TUE hacking list yet the Aussies have chosen to single out Wiggins, Froome, Biles and William sisters when there are plenty of other nations on the list. Could it be that contributors to this site have a chip on their shoulders with the Brits and Yanks which would explain all the whinging that goes on when you get beaten at sport. Did Agentina win any medals in Rio (on your own doorstep)

No, don't be confused. It is not a "nationalistic" rant. My most despised person is Diego Maradona. Despise him, no respect for him. Also, the one with the accurate "nom de plume" gets "steemed" (sic) by my comments regarding poor sportsmanship by the Pumas. I just don't like people that pretend one thing in the public domain and are not that clean. I prefer them not to talk so much and do the walk. Sky and Wiggins have been very successful in a very dirty sport and have been rather secretive, so it is no surprise that people get upset at suspicious behavior. CS do have a possible PED effect when used like the way Sky team used them on him.

I understand that under limits circumstances they may be of help. They do work. However, I think that it should be extremely limited It worked for my shoulder that time, I don't deny it. However, in contact sports they are abused.

As compared to upstanding forum members like you who are comfortable making generalised attacks against groups of people based on their ehnicity

Shane, The solution then is to point them out as trolls, not to troll back. I don't come in enough to remember the names of all the trolls (don't like them either), but getting into the discussion just feeds their intent. A good "go troll somewhere else" is response enough. Cheers,

I goes both ways with fans from both sides peterk. Can't blame people too much considering John is blatantly trolling.

Agree in full Peter. I do tire of posters like John that invade forums like weeds. I seriously have concerns about people who feel joy by inciting the nonsense that follows. Makes following some interesting discussions about the game & related issues by posters that have an actual opinion difficult at times.

fair enough It is not about being parochial it is about how to civilly converse, there seems to be many who have a knee-jerk reaction to perceived or real criticism of a particular rugby team of all things that the response is to attack the messenger instead of debating the point. Similar way that trump debates as well interestingly enough.

Not meant that way Peter, just pointing out that it's not just AB fans that do it. I have commented enough times for you to realise that I don't support such parochial nonsense surely.

Hi Carlos, depends on the injury & the effect the cortisone will have & the risk of further injury. I had cortisone shots to get back on the field quicker when playing rugby. Had a few in the muscles around my shoulder that were fine & helped me heal up & get back out there. Had others after tearing tendons off the bone in my groin (yes that's as painful as it sounds) that I have little doubt ended up ultimately ending my career. I came back too soon & because I was running in an unbalanced way I ended up with damage in my lower back. I wouldn't be worried about getting the shots in muscle tissue to aid healing but would not get a cortisone shot into a joint for anything.

Paulo, John is well known for making outlandish comments on here. I believe the responses are a reaction to his track record. His 'point' is merely an attempt to cause a stir. Arguing his point is pointless. I find making fun of his infantile post to be more entertaining. Peter K - I find the same occurs between Qld & NSW fans regularly as well.

it was a poor unfounded comment, but it is par for the course for a lot of the AB fans on this site to make personal attacks instead of just refute the argument / point made.

Hehehe, I knew some whinging pom would come quickly to Wiggins' defense. It is rather interesting to read the huge debates regarding the TUEs for Wiggins and even Froome at coincidentally important time points in racing. Unfortunately, after so many cyclists have been found out and continuing to deny their actions, it becomes difficult to accept the sum of coincidences with Wiggins. IM triamcinolone for asthma or allergies right before the Grand Tours? He claimed in his book that he NEVER injected himself with ANY drugs and omitted his use of the corticosteroids in his autobiography. Oops! The cycling world, for good reason, is now highly skeptical. I understand. Oh, I never heard that the records were altered, only that they were disclosed. Please, send me the links to the alteration claims.

I don't agree with John, but find the weak personal attacks on him quite infantile. Argue his point (which is easy to do) instead of attacking him (which proves absolutely nothing).

You're very casual about claiming that Brad Wiggins has taken PEDs aren't you? I've seen you mention it a number of times on the Roar. He's no more a drugs cheat than any of the other hundreds of elite athletes who've had their medical records hacked and in some cases altered by a group of Russians with an axe to grind. You should be careful not to let your antipathy towards all things English cloud your judgement...oh right, too late on that front.
