Josh Papalii out for Kangaroos, replacement named

By News / Wire

Manly forward Jake Trbojevic has been called into the Australian Four Nations rugby league squad for the injured Josh Papalii.

Canberra back-rower Papalii has been ruled out of the tournament with an ankle injury.

Uncapped 22-year-old Trbojevic will join the Kangaroos camp in Perth on Thursday ahead of Saturday’s Test against New Zealand.

“Jake will give us size and intimidation,” Kangaroos coach Mal Meninga said.

“It is always disappointing to lose a player of Josh’s calibre but this will be a wonderful opportunity for Jake and I’m excited to see what he can do in the green and gold jersey.”

Australia’s Four Nations campaign kicks off against Scotland in Hull on October 28.

Papalii was selected to play in the middle I'd think, most likely as the reserve lock, Frizell and Thaiday both more likely to play on the right edge than Papalii, and Gillett would have to be a certainty on the left.

Jake is a fantastic player. Better than Papalli to start with IMO But shocked no other rep players on such short notice. Graham, Jackson. Or even Ryan James or old Gallen

Jake T is probably the hardest front on text book defender in the game..big motor,an offload and, supports his ball runners..Graham doesn't have his grunt..very apt swap for Papa.

Kiwis will win anyway. This will simply make their job a tad easier. Rugby League is all about size at the end of the day.

He isnt a SOO rep or anything. Did he even play city country this year? Bit of a shock from my POV

Your probably not wrong, I think age is all that can be counted against those 3, not like they don't perform well that's for sure. Yes Jackson and graham wouldnt exactly be a like-for-like replacement for papali, but then I'm not sure Jake is either, maybe Ryan James would have bene good

I'd say Gallen,Lewis and Cooper would be considered too old as Mal has got a youth policy going. Jackson and Graham while workhorses (and skillful as well in the case of Graham) maybe aren't seen as the type of impact players that Mal was looking for when he originally picked Papali.

Disappointing that Papa won't be pulling on the green and gold on Saturday. He's had a really consistent season and will be sorely missed against the likes of Jason Taumalolo, Bromwich, JWH, Proctor, Taupau, Blair and Harris. Didn't realise that he was carrying an ankle injury towards the end of the season. Should be a really close game. I like the look of the Kiwi team in the forwards and the inclusion of Kata and Rapana in the backs. Tough one to pick.

Bit disappointed for Ryan James, but Jake is definitely on the rise, so I'm not too unhappy.

Jackson played great footy in a side that struggled towards the end of the year, i thought he was unlucky to miss the first selection. Congrats to young Jake hope he goes well.

Good young player, and good on him for getting a go! Though I find this a very odd and surprising selection given the greater experience and certainly equivalent talent and skill of other players already left out of the squad (thinking of the likes of Jackson, Graham, Cooper, Lewis, Gallen et al.). I understand picking for the future as long as they don't forget about picking the inform players to win the matches around the corner as well...

Great opportunity for Jake T. I think he'll do great in the Aussie setup and will take his game to even greater heights with the quality of players around him. Good on Big Mal for picking young and upcoming talent for this game and the four nations as I think he is building a team for the next World Cup. He has also shown that he will do what is best for the Aussie team and not beholden to State as some had feared. Big Papa is a big loss though and I think the Kiwis odds will be getting shorter. I already rated their forward pack as better than the Aussies and this will put them a bit further in front. Can't wait for the weekend.

Good on Jake Turbo - well deserved. Surprised, still no Josh Jackson, particularly as a backrower has pulled out. NSW player of the year this season and debuted for Australia in 2014. Not sure why he's fallen so far down the pecking order.

Over the moon for Jake! But really disappointed losing Papa. Brings so much aggression, and is tough to handle. We need guys like him against this massive Kiwi pack.
