Scandal-hit Smith out of Bledisloe

By News / Wire

Superstar All Blacks halfback Aaron Smith has been ruled out of Saturday’s Test against the Wallabies after being found guilty of serious misconduct.

A New Zealand Rugby Union disciplinary hearing issued Smith with a formal warning and said he would voluntarily stand down from the third Bledisloe Cup clash at Eden Park following his involvement in an incident with a woman in a Christchurch airport toilet.

Smith had already missed the all-conquering All Blacks’ final Rugby Championship win over South Africa in Durban when he returned home after the incident was made public and became a national scandal.

It means TJ Perenara is set to retain the starting halfback role against the Wallabies, who will also be without their leading halfback after Will Genia returned to his French club this week leaving the role to Nick Phipps.

Smith’s case was heard over two hours.

A NZRU statement said it was found that in light of the impact on the reputation of All Blacks jersey and commercial partners, Smith’s actions amounted to serious misconduct.

“It’s important to note that as an employment matter, it is not usual to comment publicly on proceedings,” said disciplinary panel chairman Neil Sorensen.

“However, both Aaron and his legal representative, and New Zealand Rugby acknowledge that in the circumstances, there is a need to make some public comment.

“Aaron presented himself as genuine, honest and incredibly remorseful.

“We have also taken into account the fact that the very public nature of this incident, has had a significant impact on him personally.”

Keep up the good work chum. Your vocabulary is expanding in leaps and bounds. Soon we won't be able to detect that English is your second language. And thanks for the entertainment, until next Rugby season!!.

Ah Carlos, I see our efforts have not been in vain - your latest offering contains some concentration and improvement - well done - just do some work on your moral compass and investigate the phrase about " winding someone up".

WOW you are so 'on a white horse and morally supreme' NOT - so in your life you have never heard of anyone conducting his business in a public place....? if you haven't you must have lived a sheltered life. And dont be so pedantic about his profession....he is a rugby player who plays the game for a living....and is good at it...stop being so judgemental

Hi yeah-nah. I have a slightly different take. The couple had a few options before what you suggest. 1. They could have left the bathroom (in disgust). 2. They could have "yelled" them to stop, that there were kids in the bathroom, anything to embarrass them. 3. They could have spoken to him when he left the bathroom, assuming the couple couldn't leave before. Only then, they had the option to go to his management. If they told him at the time of the incidente, what is he going to do? Punch them? I don't think so! If you see something wrong, you should confront it right away.

Mr Wright, I find another person in the roar with a funny name. One is accurate and the other one is totally incorrect. I see you do not like the way I write. But basically, I took your writing literally. I don't know if that bathroom incident includes a public exposure of Smith's "thing". Maybe because English is a second language to me I try to be a bit more careful with what I write. Again, please, let me know where it is stated that Smith got it out of his pants and waived it round in public. Precisely, please. The point that he cheated is personal, not a public issue either. I am fully aware of my moral compass, and it states that I shouldn't judge other people. After all, a jew 2000 years ago said that only the ones free of "sin" should judge. Who am I to then do it? Oh, of course, i do it many times. I dislikes Phipps behavior, for example. But this was public, you could watch it on the TV. I would have been more upset at Smith if he did it in the middle of the lounge.

What? Why is it up to the NZRU to punish Smith for cheating on his partner? They have issued a formal warning for misconduct which is a fair punishment for his actions in my opinion. The NZRU does not need to get involved in the players personal life do they? The lack of discretion Smith showed is the issue for the NZRU not the cheating. If Smith had taken the young lady back to a hotel & did whatever they did in the loo there then I would say the NZRU wouldn't care & no action would have been taken at all. I personally couldn't give a rats a@se if the AB's all cheat on their partners on a regular basis, they are people & are not perfect. What they do in their personal lives is their business not mine.

Well, Carlos, if, as your imprecise written expression implies, he took it OFF, and WAIVED it , and YOU CANNOT FIND IT, it seems to be rather small, or completely lost, or perhaps also your vision is defective.

As locked in, sometimes one-eyed AB supporters, my sister and I discussed what we would have done if we had been the two citizens. Firstly we were both annoyed at the (in my opinion) arrogance of AS. It is obvious he thought he'd get away with it (in #1's and all). He needs to be given a strong message that this behaviour is totally unacceptable. However, knowing how media exploit this sort of story locally and world-wide, there is no way I would have done what this couple did. Personally I would have gone back to the foodcourt, let one of the team/management know what was going on and leave the situation to be dealt with in-house by them- which I am confident it would have been.

Media and rugby 'fans' looking to put the boot in to the ABs and/or Smith, will ensure this incident is never forgotten. Right now this incident is very topical so I wouldn't be surprised if the incident becomes a byline to his name whenever he's mentioned in the immediate future. However, the worst of this will pass and lessen over time. He's probably still very embarrassed about the whole ordeal and no-doubt he is still working through personal matters that concern him and his partner. The sooner the emotional rawness of this (at a public/media level) blows over the better. I also doubt he's in the right head-space right now anyway- public exposure on Saturday will just prolong this phase of the nightmare he's in (albeit of his own making). Hence the voluntary stand down. Besides, he's not needed so why not sit it out till the AI's. I'm of the opinion, this not a first time he's done this - its just the first time he's been caught. Although horrible for him, he will learn from this error of judgement and so long as he is, and wants to remain an AB, I am confident he will NEVER risk doing this again.

I'm pretty sure he's working through all that with all the relevant people. The cheating thing has nothing to do with any of us. They events in the public toilet while in uniform is not acceptable though and this is the second match he will miss due to it. Some players have gotten away with more whilst others have been whacked for less. Not really worth getting too bothered about it.

Can't agree mania, it is the publics business and it became the publics business because he acted out this mistake in a public place. This is not a report of him being spotted leaving a Hotel room with a strange woman when not on point for the All Blacks, he was caught out fornicating in a public toilet in the Christchurch airport dressed in his All Black uniform FFS. I have not made any judgements on Aaron Smiths personality, I have no idea who Aaron Smith is opposed to his involvement with the All Blacks, of which I have only seen on TV. What I have pointed out is regardless of what sort of person he is, he's an All Black and that comes with responsibilities to the public of New Zealand. After everything is said and done he has been selected to represent his Country. Surely New Zealanders can ask that their representatives don't fornicate in the public toilets of airports? I'm quite sure Aaron Smith grew up wanting to be an All Black not only because it's the pinnacle of his chosen sport, but also for the fame, notoriety and benefits that come with it. Any talk of not wanting to be a moral compass for thousands of kids is BS, he is, they are and that's just a part of it like it or not.

" Smith will be issued with a formal warning, he will voluntarily stand down from assembling with the All Blacks for this weekend’s Bledisloe Cup Test match, he will forfeit his selection fees and, he is committed to getting the support he needs to deal with personal issues and to work on his relationship with his partner. " to me , that is a deal between the union and Smith. the less formal approach that looks shady. more formal would have been , either for \smith to withdraw Before this hearing and make it a self imposed ban OR for union to give him a one match ban.

Ummmm let me think for a minute. I feel it could be a trick question. :-) If I say I am definitely not having the chocolate then I am pretty sure that would rule me out choosing chocolate unless I'm allowed to change my mind of course. Is there banana or pineapple by any chance?
